Very innovative chicken chop suey cooking creation. Interesting family story behind it. Thanks for sharing it. Don't think one could find restaurants, who serve it that way.
It seems this style of chop suey has disappeared everywhere. Other common dishes back in the day jave also disappeared. Thanks for checking out my video.
Thanks for the recipe! While i don't remember my mother's chop suey recipe (they also owned a cafe back in the day), i recollect it being slightly tangy, and a little bit of carrots (and it also had bean sprouts). Will give your recipe a shot to see if it's similar to my mom's old recipe.
Hi Dan, I remember Chop Suey on menus when I was a child. I liked it. Now you never see it. I will make your version. Loved the story from your childhood and the pictures. 4 boy can raise alot of havoc. lol. Punishment necessary! Karla in Cali.
Yes, so many dishes such as this chop suey has disappeared from Chinese restaurant menus. Acrually we had 1 more brother after. I just talked to my mom about this story and she can't remember anything about it. I'm thinking it might be us running around upstairs with the baby buggy as fire patrol making a lot of noise. Thanks Karla for checking out my video.
I grew up in Milwaukee in the 80s/90s. We used to be served chop suey like this in our school cafeteria. It was made with ground pork instead of chicken. It was really good and I miss it. thanks for the recipe. I will make this with the ground pork for my kids. What happened to Bill Sook?
So this chop suey survived into the 90's. I think in our area it became extinct even earlier. I worked under Bill Sook in a restaurant when I was young. The boss's son took this picture. Thanks for checking out my video.
That was a sweet story at the end. Do you have more vivid memories of your parents and grandparents when you make and eat this dish? Because I think everybody has a story like that where some cooking and eating of a specific food makes the past feel present again.
Yes, I wrote some short stories about different food which have appeared in different short stories collections and anthologies. I'll try and include more stories in future videos. Thanks for checking out my video.
You're already out of Iceland. How's Portugal? Any Chinese restaurants there? I'm back in Vancouver. Probably going to Victroria to do a few Chinatown videos.
I didn't like these ingredients when I was a kid but I guess I got used to them as an adult. T"hanks for the feedback and thanks for checking out my video.

You're very welcome. I wonder if your mother's chop suey recipe had sweet and sour sauce added to it. Thanks for checking out my video.

Thanks for the feedback. Easy to make with different kinds of leftover vegetables. Thanks for checking out my video.
