- It's been almost a year since we bought the boat and I promised the kids a life on the water. Except I had to abandon them for a year to fix the boat. Today I finally get to show the kids their new boat for the 1st time!
Then Carlos and I fiberglass the heck out of the entire middle bulkheads in a mere 3 days, that's gotta be like a world record since it took 300 days to complete the forward bulkheads. We're almost done with fiberglassing forever and getting closer to sailing the world like our heroes @ParlayRevival @svdelos and @gonewiththewynns ! Oh yeah, and we build out a minivan and I make the family sleep in it next to the boat, vanlife style!

The good news is that you will have a great boat, and you won't be intimidated by anything that breaks in the future, because damn, can't be anything worse on a boat than doing this. Sunday is the perfect day for posting. There's 5 sailing channels I watch on Sunday alone! One on Monday, one on Wednesday and two on Friday. Sunday is prime time though.

Hey Dave, your bulkheads remind me of a wheelchair accessible shower I made for my sister in law aster her stroke. I removed the tub and ask around how to build a waterproof shower. 4 people all suggested different materials so I used all 4. Hurricane Katrina came to town a blew our beloved beach home away. Nothing but slab was left…and my custom built shower unit was sitting about thirty feet away. We laughed until we cried. That was our family sanctuary. Life goes on. Now you’re building your family sanctuary. 👍👍👍

It never ends as we upgrade electronics, service engines, fix toilets, buy nee batteries, fuel the boat, new sails, etc. But its worth every cent to have fun and life time memories with the family.

You've done the hard yards, now you've earned an easy life on a solid boat that will keep your family safe. I can't believe Lagoon did such a bad job of building these cats. The deck not even touching the bulkheads is worse than their dodgy bulkheads! I crossed Lagoon off my search for a cat to buy when I sell-up and sail.

@@david_shih I know you have been busy with Colin, But.... if you start by doing catch-up and combining 3 or 4 years into each weekly post, you should be up to date sometime in 2065 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think you could also have time to do those 10f oot sugar scoops extensions, 🤣And to out do colin, you could add a dinghy lift/swim platform that fits between the sugar scoops and gives you a full swimming deck the entire width of your boat!! Outdoing him in one sweet swoop or scoop🤣🤣

This video just popped up on my main page. I only follow two boating families on TH-cam, and have for about two years. As someone who has done a very little boat repair work, with fiberglass, back in my service time....I really hate "watch me fix my sailboat" videos. But I decided to hit "play."
Definitely not what I expected and DEFINITELY not as I remembered from my few days helping with minor repairs on our small patrolboats.

wow dude, what a thoughtful comment! thanks so much for the sub. to be honest i can't stand boat repair channels either. i usually make a note to check back in a few months. The only reason i became a boat fixin' channel is bc i had to. I've tried to make it as enjoyable as possible, bc the last thing i want to see is a 5 minute tutorial on how to fiberglass around corners and the science behind glass fibers. I'll have to look into that book deal... please let me know where to find it as i can use 1B$ like yesterday. 2 more vids till we splash!

I’m just happy you’ve been able to follow along…we’ll eventually get caught up to realtime! My dilemma now is to try to mostly catchup before I release the 14 videos I filmed while crossing the Pacific Ocean with parlay last month! Otherwise that will really be confusing.

I’ve been to the ER multiple times for steroid shots due to these reactions. Crawfish is the biggest culprit, but it’s one of my favorite things to eat so I test it every year! 😂

Don’t worry about teaching them the details, just know that they will know that if you can do it then so can they.

It's so much work, but starting on a project like yours, require some balls man... Good you have skilled "consultants" around you, giving advivce and helping you out. Hi guys, if you develop a reaction to Crustaceans it usually includes shellfish as well and most times you will have it for life. Look for telltale side reactions such as a metallic taste in the mouth or numbness of tongue, lips and throat but only use very small pieces of flesh to minimise adverse reactions. The most likely thing you can eat is oyster kilpatrick and all we can put it down to is the pork fat from the bacon.

mary definitely gets weird reactions to shellfish...but it comes randomly. not all the time...any idea why? some years she can eat crawfish other she gets hives.... and wait till you see the next episode i show this time when mary got such a bad reaction her face is so swollen it looks like its from a 500 lb woman...
Hey John! I definitely have a reaction to shellfish. I've known this for a while, but I test it each crawfish season because I love crawfish. Usually I get a lot of hives. The few times that it landed me in the ER weren't even due to shellfish. Allergists cannot seem to pinpoint what it is, so I'm always ready with antihistamines just in case. I even had a reaction while pregnant and the ER was very limited in what they could give me that wouldn't affect the baby.

Love this episode David. Parlay brought me here, and you bring so much energy to your videos and theirs. Some questions that may or may not be too personal but it's because you and Colin are an inspiration and the Wunderlust part of me wishes I could do something similar (but then the 'fear of failure' side talks me out of it):
1) What's your work background? How do you support yourselves financially? Is it daunting?
2) Were you a handy/DIY type of person before this epic repair job?
3) Were you worried about working with fiberglass from a health perspective?

Hey @laters, glad to have you here! And happy to answer what i can.
1. I worked in oil and gas for a few years. Mary used to work in healthcare. We’re living off of savings at the moment and trying our best to grow this TH-cam channel to become a source of income. We’ve got another year or so to make it work or one of us has to go back to work.
2. Handy? It’s just a bit of overconfidence thinking that you can figure stuff out. I live replaced some cabinets once and fixed some dry wall here and there, but never had any boat repair experience.
3. Yes deathly afraid. If you look back to the grinding episode I spent weeks engineering a dust collection system before I would start grinding fiberglass. I also bought the absolute best n100 masks and filters (the 100 means it Blocks 100% of the dust, I’m sure you’ve heard of n95 which block 95%.)

@@david_shih Thanks for the answers - gives an office-jockey like me a lot of inspiration to take a leap. It might not be a boat in my case, perhaps a custom off-road rig, but it's the leap that's the hard part. I have two young kids as well so it's a whole new inspiration to see you and Mary take a risk and give the kids the adventure of a lifetime. Old Mr. Bachelor-pants Colin is always an inspiration, but having kids and doing this is next level.

@@LatersOnTheMenjay. I too was an office jockey. Worked in supply chain…at least the guys working in the oil field had a bit of an adventure. It’s 1000 times easier than you think it is to do what we do now. It’s a much more natural and smooth jump from office jockey to boatlife…the concerns blown out of proportion. Its closer to how we were meant to live. I seriously can’t even imagine my life back the way it was-barely getting to see the family and constantly stressing about other people’s [the company’s] problems. I say that despite the endless toys we could buy and trips we could afford and the super comfy feeling of security we had. I still stress and make sacrifices daily, but now it is directly for myself or the family. All to say-You can do it, and you won’t regret it.
