+Juan Pablo Capurro i'm not english either although human hearing is more sensitive to noises above 200hz.. and if it does feel like 4 times quieter, idk. i guess we'll have to find out
6-7 dB is a lot more than you would think. dB uses logarithmic scale so that is almost half as loud as it was before. A 10 dB decrease would be 1/2 as loud as it was previously, so you're hovering somewhere in between.
Actually, 6-7dB is definitely audible since +/- 6dB is perceived by us as double / half the volume. But since it wasn't measured properly as you said, it doesn't really matter. Would love to see you do this kind of thing again some time with a grade A microphone! :)
The answer is to add mass to the case/components. Glue pennies or something heavy, non-conductive if you wish where necessary. Cover with foam dampening if you want. Add mass. The sound will come from air turbulence at the ventilation areas.
I think you didn't quite get how acoustics work. The placement of the dampening material wasn't really smart. Covering up big areas is way more important than putting foam between fans. For the the fans it would be a lot better to to put rubber washers between them and the case (like noctua does). Just take a look at how quiet cases are made, or music studios with sound dampening.
Used this foam. Exactly this, even it had this yellow paper on side with glue. During load, with rising temperature it starts to stink and generally it increases temperatures of components more and more during load. In terms of soundproofing it works great, but mentioned price of it is too high. Changed my case to thick and heavy Define 7 Solid and it's much quieter without such problems.
You can buy silicone gaskets specifically made for mounting between your fans and the case, or whatever, to reduce vibration. The silicone gaskets wouldn't wear out as fast as the foam and heat shouldn't really affect the silicone rubber
sound proofing can imprive airflow because most people instal their fans without thinking so you can re direct the airflow. for optimum use you need to instal between where the fans and the case conect for it to make a significant difference.
Set 2' thick Foam pads (wavy side in) on the wall where the Pc fans are pointed. In fact line the walls or inner cabinet on all sides of the pc and you will be shocked how much more quiet it is for a few bucks and no effort. Huge difference!
Wow, i cant believe how much quieter my pc is. I subsribed and even though you uploaded this a while ago, and where im at its like 3am, i just finished revamping my setup and used your foam idea and moved around a couple of fans, it sounds so much better. Thank you so much!!
it's good to salvage those scillicone rings from the DVD unit and put them between the mother bord and the PC case with the screws, believe it or no, this works for me, no radiations, and the idea of foam souds good, thank you, a good advice
and your foam around the fans will have left large areas where the dust filter will not be effective due to gaps, as your foam was not laid flat as it could have been.
They have this things in fishing used to help hold bait's they are O-rings very cheap in store less than a nickel each. Just round rubber rings and I use them on everything I can that moves in my PC which is held in with a screw (HDD, Fans, PSU, ETC) anything that I moves where I can use them and they are pretty effective at absorbing vibrations to reduce rattling. Results will vary based on your hardware but it does help with hard drives for sure. Most new cases come with a few of them to mount the HDD's on anyways.
Sticking foam on your HDD cages does not help. It's like placing sound dampening foam on a pole in the middle of your room, sound will go around... Or placing isolation foam on a pole in the middle of your room, heat will go around it anyway. Also just sticking foam on your fans will not help, vibrations will still be transfered to, in your case, the radiator.
Like others have pointed out, you probably need a hearing aid or a better decibel meter (probably the latter) as such a massive difference should easily be audible. Also, some of your suggestions don't make sense at all, or at least you didn't use the foam for what it's meant to be used. If you don't want vibrations from your fans, you need to change the way you mount your fans to the case (i.e. rubber mounting), because that's where the vibration is going, not to the air on the side of the fan. What the foam is supposed to do is absorb sound that is already there due to the vibrations, prevent reflection of sound waves and therefore resonance, it is not a tool to prevent vibration. Lastly, like you've mentioned yourself, sticking foam everywhere in your case can hinder airflow, and I'm guessing most people who cannot afford a silent case, can also not afford water cooling and in that case, those ventilation holes may be crucial for keeping temps down. Imho the best way to reduce noise is to reduce fan noise (check fan control, buy better fans), replace stock CPU cooler (a decent air cooler isn't that expensive) and if you have an spinning hard drive, either get one of those silent enclosures (though I'm not sure how well they work) or if you're a cheapskate like me, use some rubber bands and zip ties to hang it in your case. PSU and GPU are unfortunately quite hard to make quiet.
I used this in my phanteks enthoo luxe case, this foam does not work wonders. not sure if it did much of anything. also if u use this, what ever this sticks to, good luck removing it. probably should have invested in super silent fans
I was considering apple products for a quiet pc and productive work space. After watching this video I ordered sound dampening material right away. If it works it is the same as saving a lot of money. Let me see how it works. I'll recomment after utilizing this material to my editing pc. Thanks.
That's cool and all, but there are much better places to put the foam than directly onto the fan. To add Noctua have their rubber fan mounts which work with all of their fans and some third party fans aswell. All Im saying is that placing foam on a fan is somewhat overkill.
that what i was looking for, since i removed my Corsair 550D to Corsair D750 the noise increase a lot. the D550 has foam to reduce noise, i have been looking for these since October, nice done
The fan idea is pretty stupid, but the rest is decent. Better off just getting good fans. Also, idle temps tell very little about effectiveness of your cooling. Especially when liquid cooling. Even the little closed loop coolers like yours. You need to do pre and post load testing. For extended time, 20-30 min at least. Then you get some actually useful data.
Your setup is not huge like others but I love the look and the duel monitors look amazing. Yu should think about building a caselabs custom water cooled case To go with it for the channel
probably would be better if you covered that huge perspex window with some foam. i realise you wont see your parts but if your aim was to quieten the pc then why would you leave that huge area?
I have a DDC pump that is improperly mounted. I mounted it in the HDD area in the inwin 909, and I didn't know how to go about drilling through with the short clearance so I just hot-glued it, in which it keeps falling apart. Also; I don't have a fan controller for my fans.
If the panels of your PC case are vibrating there is simple cheap solution. Go to the Dollar Store and get some big jumbo erasers. Glue the erasers on the inside of the offending panel and you are done.
You're on the right track. The rubber mass is a damper. Add mass. More mass = less vibration (the fan noise) per energy (fan noise/air turbulence output). Glue pennies or whatever cheap mass to the panels. Foam "absorbs" some. Mass is the answer. A cast iron case for example... The fan noise cannot move the iron panels' mass. Most all noise will be from air noise at vents. Mostly from back or most open air areas.
+Mike C (Rustytrombone) You might have some services nearby that will allow you to use their 3D printers on the cheap, or you can order 3D printed shit from the net :^)
Hey there, I just got the foam, one questions, HOW THE HELL DO YOU CLEAN IT UP? HAHA THANK YOU, 'cause when I opened my PC it was like OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know jet engines are loud but they really don't grind. Sorry I'm being picky but it just so happens I build them 😂 Anyhow nice vid I think I'll take the same route with my rebuild. Thanks!🙂
Did anyone else notice that it was the same reading...... It did nothing. Just buy an already sound dampened case and turn it off or lower your fan speed when you are not using it.
I have only 1 fan, excluding cpu cooler, so should I get the maximum amount of fans I could get for my case, so my question is really just - the more the fans the quieter the pc?
WHY THIS WON'T WORK: You put your phone on the tower... Obviously the clothing reduced the vibrations spreading trough the metal and yes iphone picked that up. However, this has nothing to do with the vibrations that go to your ears... Bear in mind, that the decibels reduction that iphone picked up when it was in contect with your tower will probably be 0.2 decibel that your ear would pick up (or wouldn't since the change is so small that it makes no difference) Unless you keep your microphone on your tower while recording, this vide makes no sense.

Bigger fans at slower speeds are quite and provide adequate cooling.

6-7 dB? every 3 dB the sound doubles so -3 = 1/2 -6 = 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4 so that'd make your pc 4 times quieter!
+xVoItagex +1 for clarification!
+Juan Pablo Capurro i'm not english either although human hearing is more sensitive to noises above 200hz.. and if it does feel like 4 times quieter, idk. i guess we'll have to find out

I'm going to cover my room in this stuff. Lol.
+DeadlyPsyko Thanks for the idea.
+Infinite Zero how did it go?
lol cover his mouth...
There are better options if you are actually considering doing this. do a little more reaserch
also better use it on a normal case not a pre-silenced once like this.
easy, turn it off.

Foam may be dampening some noise, but you're right. Unless the fans are loose, what noise are they making vibrating against other components?
Rubber grommets on every screw, rubber gaskets between the case and any fans, and rubber feet on peripherals touching the case, helps as well.
what if the vibrations were talking to me and were positive, should I keep the vibrations?
+jake atassi whatever gives you good vibes bro
Ah. I see this ones a Beach Boy.

You should look into getting rubber fans mounts. They make it easier to replace fans and cut the vibration in half.

Corsair Air Series AF120 LED 120mm Quiet Edition, Is a great fan. And im buying the dampening foam!

Noctua NF-S12B REDUX 700 120mm case fans are only 6.8dBA so ifyou have a few fans this adds up so replacing case fans would be a good addition.
I used this in my phanteks enthoo luxe case, this foam does not work wonders. not sure if it did much of anything. also if u use this, what ever this sticks to, good luck removing it. probably should have invested in super silent fans
you are absolute right, sir

yeah rubber mounts work so much better. Screws are metal, they ignore anything else you put between the fan and chassis.
that what i was looking for, since i removed my Corsair 550D to Corsair D750 the noise increase a lot. the D550 has foam to reduce noise, i have been looking for these since October,

A video about aftermarket sound dampening foam! FINALLY!
I have a Corsair C70 in Military Green. I have 7 fans in it. No foam. With barely any noise.
You should link those background songs.
That camera's picture is so clear.
is there anything else i can use instead of specific sound dampening foam? like just normal foam or anything else?
probably would be better if you covered that huge perspex window with some foam. i realise you wont see your parts but if your aim was to quieten the pc then why would you leave that huge area?
Just a note : Squeezing the foam will make it less effective in absorbing sound.
H440 already comes with sound dampening though.... why add more...
+Joshua Park Idk, why buy 1 slices of pizza when you can buy 2?
trueeeeeeeeeee :)
+randomfrankp Why buy two when you can buy 3?

I have a pc tower that is lined with soundproof material...no sound at all :D LOVE IT
Can't hear anything, my computer is too loud...
What a Incredible Video Quality!!!!!!, What did you use or which camera did you use for record that??????
These ain't gonna do jack for a HP Proliant ML350
can you use the foam somehow if you do not want to open pc and install it there?
I did this awhile back with my fractal design core 3500 and it did help but not ground breakingly so!
I have a DDC pump that is improperly mounted. I mounted it in the HDD area in the inwin 909, and I didn't know how to go about drilling through with the short clearance so I just hot-glued it, in which it keeps falling apart. Also; I don't have a fan controller for my fans.
Pretty sure those are just EVA Foam sheets with a sticky backing. You can get EVA Foams larger than that for cheaper and not $15
my gal friend is too loud and noisy.. I need to cover her moving parts with this foam.. Thanks for d tip!

I only just noticed you have your top lg monitor upside down! Nice idea but does the LG log being upside down bug you?
+Totally Silenced woul def bug me lol, but thats just my ocd
put a piece of black tape on top of the logo if it bugs you
Is that a sticker on the case or custom built?
Nice vid Frank! Cool glasses btw! :D
I'm going to try this just on the hard drive cage because that's where I hear the most vibrations coming from.
please dont
please elaborate
What kind of camera do you use.
when are you getting your new motherboard?
Hey there, I just got the foam, one questions, HOW THE HELL DO YOU CLEAN IT UP? HAHA THANK YOU, 'cause when I opened my PC it was like OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, it's not really the noise level that's annoying (Obviously it is at some point) It's more about the tone of the noise.
For a sound engineer, that's great
I know jet engines are loud but they really don't grind. Sorry I'm being picky but it just so happens I build them 😂 Anyhow nice vid I think I'll take the same route with my rebuild. Thanks!🙂
I gotta ask, are you running youtube full time or on the side? Just an aspirant here.
fuck you louis
+Louis Vo fuck you too Louis hahaha
best comment chain 10/10
the foam was touching the fans at the front?
it's at this very moment I realized your logo has an F in it..
My PC at idle is 35db is that bad? It sound really loud for me
any way to shut up an audible (though not noisy) AIO CPU cooler?
Im confused. Are You on Hackintosh or Windows styled with OSX stuff?
I run my GPU fans at a lowest setting. It's frying calmly at 95 degrees with furmark running. When rendering a 3D scene it was like 65 degrees.
i didnt mind the timelapse dude! Thank you for the vid awesome tip!! xD
TO MAKE PC DIY PROJECTS EVEN CHEAPER, BUY NON-PC COMPONENTS. Silverstone is a PC components manufacturer
Did anyone else notice that it was the same reading...... It did nothing. Just buy an already sound dampened case and turn it off or lower your fan speed when you are not using it.
did he announce the winner of the strafe rgb?
Just came across your channel and this video, definitely subscribing! Great video man! keep it up!
Hello which application you use ? Reading average, Please App Store download link , thank you.
What's the name of app used to measure the sound? Thanks..
just look for decibel
Degree decibel difference?
Sounds legit.
6-7dB should be audible. A 10dB increase is twice as loud.
I have only 1 fan, excluding cpu cooler, so should I get the maximum amount of fans I could get for my case, so my question is really just - the more the fans the quieter the pc?
No. More fans generally will be louder. Better just getting really good low noise fans. I personally like Noctua, but they are not cheap.
try more fans and keep them running at a lower rpm. Get those Noiseblocker E loops, I can highly recommend them :)
What is the music you used? Two or three different tracks?
WHY THIS WON'T WORK: You put your phone on the tower... Obviously the clothing reduced the vibrations spreading trough the metal and yes iphone picked that up. However, this has nothing to do with the vibrations that go to your ears... Bear in mind, that the decibels reduction that iphone picked up when it was in contect with your tower will probably be 0.2 decibel that your ear would pick up (or wouldn't since the change is so small that it makes no difference) Unless you keep your microphone on your tower while recording, this vide makes no sense.
Tip for the cost savvy: I got 2 meters of foam from a hardware store for $8.
did you spray paint your logo onto your pc
Song name?
I think this is some sort of lo-fi music.
Love it
How did you rig your pc rgb lights to change based on temperature
Allright! Here's the best solution for a REALLY SILENT PC:
1. Set you PC in BIOS to start from USB Keyboard or Mouse.
2. Buy a USB extension cable (longest possible)
3. Buy the longest HDMI cable you can find.
4. Make some holes in the walls.
5. Move your PC in the basement.
Here you go. Guys, you're welcome.
By the way - i don't drink beer. But a Redbull would be fine...
And, doing that, you will save money from investing in your "lights, nice cases, expensive fans" etc
My PC is 38decibels on average during IDLE, and yours is 50 ish? Damn I thought my PC was loud.
Simon Gillblad same mines 35 db and I find it annoying
I have a Nzxt h510 case, can I use the foam on sides of the tempered glass?
From a company called Silverstone
you may or may not have heard of them.
I did not like the fact that you did not use a sound meter to check the sound level. Also would have loved if you had shown both the readings for sound and temperature levels at the beginning of the procedure, in the video. I think you did this video in a hurry - which is why a bit of snag in the planning.
Frank, great channel and I enjoy the videos but this one was a little overkill on the sound dampening foam. You have to be careful not to overheat your rig by covering up all the openings in the case. Try a fan controller with heat sensors and the sound won't be a problem. its not good ida u can't know if u have prablam in ur pc
How is it doing with the heat things?
do you actually game on that mouse pad..
why not apply it to windows panel as well since they made a lot of noise too I did to my s340
does it make a difference?
Yes, not much but you can tell
Are you realling going to do this for 10db?
10 db can be a huge amount, especially if you have a fairly quiet PC to start with.
db is a multiple not a scale of 1 to 10... so 10 DB is a noticeable amount the average talking db reading is around 30 i think 20 is whispering...
is your phone screen craked?
