    One thing that I believe is relevant, and little known about the band, is that when they blew up in 1994, they were shy and refused to become 'poster boys' of punk, and turned down appearances on pretty much every talk show and programme in America. They kept very low profile and turned down Letterman, SNL, Conan, 60 minutes and everything else, unlike Green Day and Blink. The only exception they made was to appear on the front cover of Spin at 95. It wasn't until 2012 when they finally agreed and appeared on Leno and Kinmel.
    It's all well described in a book by Ian Winwood 'Smash'.

    It hurts to see Ixnay on the Hombre not mentioned at all (goes right in between Smash and Americana). Arguably their best work. Anyway definitely some great points in the video. I think their lack of "respect" simply comes from people being salty about their success, particularly their very clear departure from the skate punk sound to mainstream rock/pop.

    Maybe it was after your time but after The Offspring landed this silly hit in 1998 the genre polarized here in Germany. Basically they opened the door for such bands like Blink 182 or Sum 41 which nobody, at least in this country, would pay that much attention to if Americana weren't so huge.
    Every time I'm in the rock bar in Germany they always play Self Esteem, so basically I don't see how their back catalog is forgettable? I see your point the silly pop songs are less memorable, but to be honest, less memorable for good. Those were actually always the downs of their records. Never saw The Offspring as a goofy skate punk band though and more as an adult band with mature, intelligent lyrics from beginning on, and I think most people will stay with bands like that rather than with less memorable lyrics of for example Blink 182 (all 90ies, early 2000s records) era. But taste is differs from human being to human being. Just my two cents.

      Self esteem was the first song I ever heard from them. Still laugh my ass off when I hear it. I was born in 53 and love them. My children still like them as well. They're also covering topics that some are too cowardly to cover.

    The Offspring also played the 924 Gilman street punk venue a lot and should’ve been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the same time as Green Day was in 2015.

    I fell in love with the Offspring in high school around 1996, after smash before ixnay. The self titled on nitro records and the Ignition record are massively overlooked. Their best work was early to mid 90s, by the early 2000s they were fading. They came out of the underground punk rock scene in 1980s Southern California, so I never quite understood why the gatekeepers of the genre always gave them shit. They traveled the country in a shitty truck and played to empty halls. They are the real mccoy, their success was deserved and it came from years of pounding the pavement playing wherever they could.

    Always have been and will be my favourite band. Ignition, smash, and Americana get blazed every day. Great band live. Also take away the pop songs they have released (clearly for revenue) they are lyrically very intelligent and on point, as well as having bad ass riffs and melodies. Gone away, self esteem, come out and play, Americana, kids aren't alright all still have relevant connections that to me will be eternal. Bit pissed I am still waiting for new music to drop from them.. just as well they have a great back catalogue already. But I agree, they are underrated and don't seem to get much respect. But in England, they were definitely a huge part of the 90s.

      I think Ian Winwood's book also mentions that Larry Livermore (Lookout records) thought that The Offspring hitting it so big on Epitaph was the guide that Green Day could have used to remain on Lookout. (I don't know if Lookout could've supported Green Day) I do wander what the late 90s would have looked like if The Offspring were more closely associated with the Fat and Epitaph bands.

  • @northcliffe4lyfe
    @northcliffe4lyfe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Offspring fans prefer the aggresive sounding sarcastic songs of the 90s, whereas Green Day and Blink exploited the younger emo genre which emerged in the early 00s. As a result, these bands also changed their image whereas The Offspring didn't and it didn't shift as many records as a result. By the time they started to adapt in the latter 00s, it sounded a bit too much like MCR in parts or Rise Against working their way to the early 2010s. If you hear someone being nostalgic about Green Day on a mainstream radio station, it's usually about American Idiot, not Dookie because it probably came out 6 years before the dj was born.

    I'd consider myself an Offspring superfan and I can't say I disagree with anything you said. I think the catchiness and dated references of their hit singles led people into thinking they were this sort of one- or two-hit wonder band, or some kind of guilty pleasure band. People don't really take them seriously, because Offspring themselves don't take themselves too seriously. Green Day tried to be "about something" with American Idiot, but Offspring never really tried to be about anything. And their cheesy breakout hits of the 90s and early 00s completely overshadowed the breadth of their deep cuts (songs like Pay The Man and Amazed, to name a couple). So people just kind of saw them as this passing fad that didn't really belong among a particular group or genre. Here's to hoping for some moderate success with Let The Bad Times Roll! Although the title track already has some dated references...

    the reason why offspring isn't as celebrated nowadays is that a great majority of their material is SO unabashedly of the time it was made that it doesn't really resonate anymore i feel like. also they really tried to ride trends hard post-smash. it really dates every project because their sound has not been consistent between albums. they just did the style that was big during the time and then added a few straight up punk songs in between. i think this approach just alienated the audience overtime

    • @StarmaGeddon
      @StarmaGeddon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      but most bands that are still successful do exactly this, look at Blink 182. i agree Offspring also did this, but not to the extent that they became sellouts - which is a good thing - and i think that's the problem with them not being that relevant anymore.

  • @devilsoffspring5519
    @devilsoffspring5519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the Offspring don't have "nostalgic currency" as you put it so well, it's probably just because they don't have any songs that are tearjerkers. Green Day, Blink-182, and a zillion and one others that are well-known for tearjerker songs have the nostalgic currency.
    The Offspring are known for energy and intensity, not for having legions of young girls bawling their eyes out in their blacklight-lit rooms surrounded by Hello Kitty shit.
    You're ranking their image, not their music--their music is very good.

    One additional thing I noticed, The Offspring never really hit it big with an actual straightforward pop punk song. Which hurts in solidifying an identity since that's what's they're supposed to do best.
    All Offspring's biggest hits were a step or two removed from the pop punk genre. Green Day hit it big with pop punk classics like "Basketcase" and others like it. Blink 182 had "What's My Age Again", "Damnit" and others. With Offspring, "Self-Esteem" was grunge, "Gone Away" was rock, "Pretty Fly" was pop/rock and after that, most of their singles just got further and further away from punk rock/pop punk. They largely had to abandon their normal playbook to write a hit, unlike Blink and Greenday.
    "Come Out & Play" and "The Kid's Aren't Alright" are the closest they came in their prime to a successful punk rock hit. But CO&P, while great, feels in part like a novelty song, and TKAA was still more of a minor hit, although it's aged fairly well.
    I recall reading that Dexter was disappointed that "Want You Bad" wasn't bigger than it was. I think that was Dexter's last ditch effort to write a hit pop punk song in the band's heyday.

    The Offspring only have two truly great albums, Smash and Ixnay on the Hombre.
    Their early stuff is pretty solid, but doesn’t stand out as exceptional. Their later post-Smash albums weren’t nearly as good, but all their albums have several really good songs on them, and each album seems to have one or two radio hits on it.
    Overall, they’re definitely a great band, it’s just that all their best songs are spread out over many albums, buried amongst a lot of relatively mediocre filler tracks (especially on their most recent albums). One day they’ll be able to release an absolutely killer anthology compilation album though.

    Saw them on the Smash tour when I was 12 and picked up Ignition at the show. Loved both albums and Ixnay but they lost me at Americana. They deserve respect for helping shape west coast punk which became pop punk and bringing punk mainstream through great songs. I think they don’t get respect as they became too successful then tried to chase hit songs with kind of corny formulas like copying other successful songs.

  • @arkbuildersparadigm564
    @arkbuildersparadigm564 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems like they just hit their peak really early in their music careers (during the SMASH days). When Ixnay on the Hombre came out, I noticed that they were beginning to write a few off-sounding songs that didn't quite make sense for the genre they were a part of. And the more albums they came out with after that, the more I kept seeing these silly songs.
    And the silly songs began to outweigh the serious songs. I think I counted 2 songs from Days Go By that were actually comparable to their punk-style speed rock.
    One positive thing I can say is that the sound quality of their recordings got better over the years. But what good is that when the song-writing gets worse and worse.
    I used to be a fan. In fact, they were in my top 5 favorite bands during their early years.
    Smash still shines. But they just went downhill over the years and stopped taking the music seriously.

      @@dynamo4543 they released a cover ep which was cool and fast and a single which was also pretty fast for what they normally do. Dexter even shouted again.

    "Evolving social norms." Or....... in reality, social engineering and cultural degeneration. Also 99% of the offsprings best songs were not played on the radio or in the mainstream.

    They were trash ever since bob rock started producing them. The sound quality took a massive dive and he just ruined all their songs.

    The Offspring probably get no respect because the singles are Pop punk which they use to pay the bills,BUT they have slammin shit on their albums
    Hassan chop among others from the latest album are pure punk,but they hide it on their albums
