I am revisiting everything B&R that I can find and my opinion is, yes, I was EXACTLY the target audience when this came out in 97 I was 7 years old, to me, this was majestic and amazing and indeed got a bunch of toys…but I still don’t understand the criticism this gets. I will never take the bat nipples and the puns as the reason why this was bad, that’s too small, that to me feels like people grabbing on to anything they can to trash the film. I agree that is not a psychological dark film like the others but it’s still a well-made, fun, action-packed superhero film… The only two things I agree are not the best is George Clooney as Batman is TOO weak, he wasn’t even trying and the inclusion of Batgirl was unnecessary, though, as Joel S. stated in an interview: he saw her as an introduction for young girls to be interested in the film as well, and makes sense when trying to comply to WB’s wish to make it family friendly. Makes you wonder though: Batman Returns was criticized for being TOO dark, then they went with Joel and Batman and Robin is being criticized for being too campy? No-one can make up their mind!!!! It’s almost as if studios and audiences want to just find flaws and complaint
I call it the "Bat-Curse": the films in any Batman cycle always start of with a grittier, more grounded aesthetic, followed by a sequel that overloads the narrative and teeters on the verge of camp, a second sequel that veers straight into campy self-parody, and a fourth picture which is effectively a reboot that ends up ludicrously overstuffed, incoherently plotted and pretentious. As with the 80s-90s cycle kicked off by Tim Burton's Batman (1989), and concluding with Batman and Robin (1997) so the recent 2000s-2020s run initiated by Chris Nolan's Batman Begins (2005), proceeding through Zack Snyder's ill-concieved Justice League(s) and rounded off with Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022). It seems the subject of a guy in tights and a pointy-eared cowl just can't sustain serious, straight-faced treatment by professional film-makers for more than two movies in a franchise. Go figure.
Geaorge Clooney was a bad pick for Batman, he lacked the darkness that most other Batman had. He is the Batman I liked the least, but the movie was okay. The best Batman movies in my opinion are Nolan’s, like the realistic take and darker tone.
@KinoReel-c4f Thanks for the confirmation. This comment was actually meant for the King Arthur video, but somehow TH-cam applied it to the Batman and Robin one (i was watching the playlist). The King Arthur video was noticeably more awkward in its phrasing than the other videos on this channel. Do you have a native English speaker proofread for you?
No, it was not a native speaker who translated all this videos.:) Another American guy used to read and fix all translated scripts, but at one day I stopped using his help (I don't remember when).
Love one-liners like 6:07 which "in fact" is an opinionated statement. Batman Forever's levity and lightness is well-tempered by moments of gravity and some shadowy visuals. Fair to say it found the minimum level of darkness and self-seriousness for its brand. If they made sure the next movie "looks exactly the same" in tone, it would have been a good bet for audiences to continue taking seriously. BF was NOT as cartoonish as B&R.
I think I believe Schumacher that it was the studio that pushed the tone. Remember the studio got a ton of backlash about Batman Returns being too adult and not for kids and looky there Burton is out with his dark broody tone and in is Schumacher with his more colorful kid friendly Batman Forever. Batman & Robin looks to me like an hour and a half long toy commercial. It’s not as if Joel Schumacher can’t do dark and broody… the man directed 8mm. So to me, he was a gun for higher that was brought on to do what the studio wanted. They wanted a toy commercial. They got a toy commercial.
The WB got what they wanted. Schumacher's films were live action cartoons. Batman Forever did have some cringe worthy moments, but Batman & Robin upped the cringe meter to annoying levels. It killed Batman in film for 7 yrs, a pretty powerful feat.
Re: 3:17 I remember having gotten so used to people seemingly unable to speak of it without trash-talking it. Then I hear from my Russian coworker when no one was right there to bias what she said. She spoke mostly of how identifiable Mr. Freeze was, him being a near-widower and I'm like *blink*blink* (Even back then, I was forming a good habit of not steamrolling someone's opinion.) Working theories: 1) if you're an accomplished ESL communicator, fluent but not naturalized, you lack a full sense of how ridiculous some of the dialogue is. 2) if your first exposure to this movie was a version dubbed into another language, maybe the dub-over actors & actresses improved it.
The fat shaming is not cool at all. But Silverstone is in a profession where appearance is very important. She was hired at a particular weight and then gained more during filming. It was reported her costume had quite a few size alterations. If her weight fluctuation was that apparent in test screenings, then major continuity errors should also be taken under consideration which damages the quality of a film. Every actor on a production as big as that knows how important continuity is. Any actor would be reprimanded for changing their appearance unplanned mid production - from an accidental tan to losing muscle mass. So why does she get to do this 🤔
Because she was at the peak of her popularity at the time. After that movie not sure what it's called I think clueless she was a hot property so studio was quick to cast her. But either way these are minor niggles. The problem is the script sucks and movie was just too camp to work. It feels like the Batman TV show in the 60s.
No didn't like this movie at all and as a longtime Arnold Schwarzenegger fan I'm not sure why the hell he praised this movie it stunk although I admit he steals the movie as Mr Freeze it was quite amazing
Chris O'Donell said that Batman Forever felt like a film, and that Batman and Robin felt like a toy commercial.
It’s still a gorgeous looking movie that is a living comic book, I mean

The problem wasn’t nipples on the bat suit. It was batgirls didn’t.
This is my favorite Batman movie. It’s so campy and heightened, it’s like a live cartoon. I love it so much.
There’s a lot of worse movies out there, this movie isn’t as bad as every makes it out to be

He a great Bruce Wayne but a terrible Batman
To me, Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer were better as Batman than George Clooney. And Christian bale was better than Clooney too. Ben affleck was ok.
still my fav batman film
The script for this video feels like it was written in another language and Google translated to English.
It was, but not Google translated.

I watched it on opening weekend, unintentionally funny
This one ranks in my bottom 10 list.

This film was so bad that they should burn the master reels.
*It was considered a box office bomb*
I will say I liked Batman 1989 and returns 1992 and forever 1995 better than Batman and Robin.
Allow me to break the 🧊
The worst live action Batman film ever.
Batman vs Superman has entered the chat
@@antitroll890 Dawn of Sucktice did not successfully kill off DC films for almost a decade.
@@antitroll890 agreed that was way worse batman movie than this
The dark knight rises and BVS beg to differ
It just successfully killed off the entire DCEU before it even got started
Thank God this bombed. I couldn't deal with a Nicholas Cage Superman.
He did a cameo in the flash movie and it might've worked. 😂
