I have to say I enjoyed this specific performance very much .They have presented a very realistic relationship of the Count and the Countess of Almaviva❤.Everybody sang heavenly.Bravo!🎭🎹👏
I am surprised that only one poster has yet complained about the staging. To me, it was the ugliest I have ever seen so far. I struggle to see the point of it: and this from someone who actually enjoys innovative and quirky stagings of Mozart operas. The cherry on the cake was seeing the Countess and Susanna capering around in underwear: I have nothing against undressing _per se_ (a lot of successful stagings have made effective use of it). It is the Victorian bloomers I found offensive. What on earth do they stand for, what are they supposed to mean?! Is it a failed joke about the ladies being daring (i.e. "culottées) or being the ones who wear pants? Is it to slap on my face something about the Revolution bringing on bourgeois mores against the libertine Ancien Régime? Is this the reason we have works in progress in act 1 (and a couple assembling a single bed?!) followed by mixed rubble with easy chairs and parasol in act 3? Is the shabbiness of the Countess room supposed to simbolize the decadence of the aristocracy? Combine all that with the casting of a Marcellina who not only looks but is made to look as if she were Figaro's daughter instead of his mother; and of a most uncharismatic Figaro (he should be the protagonist!) against a very seductive count. I struggle to find some coherence in this contrived, superficial and muddy-coloured jumble that does not help good singers to shine. I suppose the only reason nobody else complains is that most of the costumes are "period" enough. And curls go with everything.
The production is just awful. One of the ugliest ever dare I say. The tempo is plodding and lacks the usual sparks and spices. I cant believe this comes from NH. The good thing is Rodney Gilfry is still one of the best for the count.
