How did we get here ? Conservative party in freefall, polling worst position in 100 years. Even if there were a deliberate strategy and plan to lose that much support, it would be hard to achieve as people hold on to voting preferences, often for life. Perhaps the answers start with the coalition with the LibDems, this is never a good position to be in. The big one is Brexit and failing to deliver for the 52% who wanted to leave the EU and pissing off the remaining 48% for doing the referendum in the first place. The result has been a Brexit that no one wanted but the Conservatives seem proud of their non-achievements and push for more. Fourteen years in power has seen record rising taxes, failing NHS, Covid scandals, inflation in double digits, falling GDP, crumbling schools, more asylum seekers in small boats than before Brexit, lack of skilled and unskilled labour in all sectors, lack of affordable housing. I could go on and on with this list of failures. Add to this the conga line of Prime Ministers... or a circus procession including mop haired clowns and rotting cabbages. Finally, perhaps the worst sin has been to slide to the far right and then tell us that moving even further to the right into fascism is the answer - A large section of the conservative base has been seduced by the dark side of autocratic populist fascism in the form of Nigel Farage and Reform. No wonder people have rebelled and lurched to the left... it's self defence.
