    Having been a soldier and British citizen. it is a responsibility to your family, your community and to your country. Rishi Sunak did not show any of those qualities on the 80th commemoration of D Day. He revealed the selfishness and greed that we all see in the world today.

    Sunak said he stuck to an agenda set for him ages ago. Why didn’t he have the good judgment and assertiveness to say ‘No this is an absolute priority, change the itinerary,’ ?

      Rishi Sunak's blunder probably occurred because he had no inherent 'gut' feeling or deep cultural memory about the importance of D-Day. Additionally, his advisors were probably of the age group that were educated to not appreciate the positive history and traditions of the UK, and the West.

    Sunak has been criticised for several reasons but I haven't heard anyone mention this one yet:
    He snubbed the American President!
    Whatever you may think of the current holder of that office, they are entitled to be treated with respect when attending an event important enough that they travel to another country to attend.

      My husband's father landed on Omaha Beach. The horror of it never left him. He really didn't talk about it much. People rarely talk about truly horrific experiences.

    Mr, Sunak has achieved the impossible - by leaving the D Day commemoration early, his performance as PM got even worse. He certainly by his action on the D Day commemorations shows he is keen to get out as “Sunak” possible. His wish will certainly be granted soon. He has disrespected the veterans, for whom this was the last chance for those still living to remember their fallen friends and fellow servicemen on a landmark anniversary.

    Perhaps Sunak didn't want to be seen with other EU leaders because his 'base' would not approve. Unfortunately, the same 'base' takes the D-Day Memorial very seriously and recognises that WWII was won by an international force.

    It was more than strange....me 75% german 25% british, always being proud to see the former Empire and our US Cousins...celebrate victory over the Nazis , so I would expect, that a so called patriotic PM, should be there....

    I question Rishi's British heritage. He clearly has zero empathy for armed forces personnel, or people who fight for their country. The Conservatives should have just kept Boris, now they won't even exist as a viable party in a month or so. Good riddance I say, we need a better alternative to Labour.

    It's nothing like Michael Foot wearing an odd kind of coat: Foot was too infirm to fight, but wrote excoriating pieces about the appeasers in the 1930s. Not everybody's taste of patriot, but I singularly doubt he'd have bunked off a serious D-Day ceremony.

      This is especially the reason why Rishi Sunak should have been advised by his advisors. I wonder if they, too, are of the ages or backgrounds, that were taught to not appreciate the positive history and traditions of the UK and the West?

    Couldn't even get one days visit right by simply staying for the duration of the service, even Zelensky turned up to a commemoration for a battle that Ukrainian's in WW2 were not directly involved in! A British prime minister out of touch with Britain.

    Stop defending a leader by blaming his advisors. As a leader Rishi Sunak must carry the can for this extremely disrespectful act. He should have vetoed it. Period.     It's really baffling how this could have happened. Was this intentional? As in, he did not want to be seen with European leaders so as to appease the Reform crowd? Or did he really not realize the weight of the occasion? Neither explanation is good.
