really enjoyed this history vid from sabaton personally, glad you took some time to check it out too! ive seen you havent checked out ''attero dominatus' from sabaton yet, that would be my next recommendation for sure! cheers lad.
Interesting reaction...you wondered about the psychological impact of the kind of killing that was being talked about in the video, and the Germans did find that many men/people did not have the ability to shoot like that without it impacting their mental state. They found that a significant percentage would either not pull the trigger, or would deliberately miss the target in situations when firing squads were used. The Germans did studies and learned a significant amount about human sociopathy and psychopathy, and the psychology of killing in such numbers, but I am pretty sure using any of that data nowadays is very difficult.
to add to ghat the data has also been found to be skewed, actual reports and the recorded data had contradictory numbers and numbers from different sources didn't add up, I read paper on this, (400 pages) one episode mentioned, a rear guard action of a unit, the unit fought well enough but was severely decimated, they held their position untill relieved, and stilll their courage and resolve was questioned in official reports, why? they where not born in Germany, and this is not the only such episode.
15:00 The book 'Ordinary Men' touches upon this in great detail. It focuses on the Reserve Police Battalion 101 which was one of many units that were tasked with mass-shootings of Jewish people in Poland. The book characterises the men into three groups, those who absolutely refused to carry out the killings, those who did not want to participate but could be convinced / coerced into doing so, and of course those who are willing to do so. Those that fall into the latter category are not necessarily willing murderers however, but a lot just manage to convince themselves that what they are doing is necessary. The book details that on their first mission, the commander told his men (in tears because he was horrified by what he's been ordered to do) that they would be killing civilians, but also told them that those who don't want to do so would be assigned to the rear. Dozens spoke up and were transferred. As they make their way to the execution site, hundreds more ask to be transferred to the rear. When the ones who stayed put were about to do the killings, they were very shaky that the shots went too high or too low, resulting in a slow death for the civilians which further horrified the men. Even for those who would be hardened after many killings or true Nazis who considered Jews and other 'undesirables' as subhumans, many would still feel so much guilt over the killings. One of the reasons why the Nazis turn to gassing their victims in the camps was that so many of the shooters were so horrified by their roles in the Holocaust that most turn to drinking, and many committed suicide, including Einsatzgruppen members and other SS units.
An excellent suggestion...I am kinda kicking myself I did not suggest it myself...I have it sitting on a bookshelf right in my sightline as I sit in front of my computer. 💯😁
as usual a great reaction, and me watching you must be cursed or something, i have had to try four times to get through the whole thing. another time it wad even more trouble, th7s time ut wax visiting relatives and niec3 borrowed pad...
Wehrmacht basically means defense force. Wehrmacht was compriced by Luftwaffe(airforce), Kriegsmarine(navy) and Heer(army). Later Waffen SS was instituted as the 4 branch with their own leadership and ranks.
