During that time, the player gets ample resources thrown at them (particularly if young), for learning and development. It would likely deprive another player in terms of time, effort and finance. This is relevant if the skill set required is close to that of another sport. 3. If you magnify no.2 above and find that under-18 players start to do the same, the economics can start to be exponential to the detriment of feeder club, the NRL team and the NRL itself. It's different if the player shifts to another NRL club, because arguably the players "stock/profile" is still within the NRL ecosystem. 4. The player managers (like in most sports), who's only incentive is the green dollar, will look to exploit ever cross code opportunity to get their client (and thereby themselves) a large payday. We've already seen this with AFL, and Union. Don't expect this to change anytime.

Guys used to dream of throwing 300 yards 3 tds a game now that’s pretty much standard for the good ones. 5000 yards and 35+ touchdowns used to be a dream season. Now virtually everyone does that. Can’t over protect playmakers it ruined the game.

However the Tongan and Samoan success is changing that, and while the Tongans s and Samoans are being successful in rugby league they’re getting pillaged of all their talent by the all blacks. The ones that stay with their national team, have to pay to play. More than a couple Tongan players have admitted at their last tour of Europe they had to pay for their own flights and accommodation for that tour. That’s ridiculous. Rugby league needs to get into those areas turn the likes of toumalolo and co in to gods among men and build up the schools and the local communities to turn rugby league into the major sport there.
