Is that the Hobbs/Bell McLaren-BMW that won Road America in '79? I was there.
This... is... awesome
Was the car being run without boost? It looks as though the central boost gauge wasn't working at all. Additionally, I couldn't hear any evidence of a turbo.
Seems like no boost... :(
tzmetalsmith after doing some more reasearch, I think this is a works car that has been converted back to its original 2.0l NA status. The car raced NA originally (with what was effectively a Formula 2 engine), then got a turbo (which was both incredibly unreliable and not quite fast enough for the Division 2 class). Then, BMW custom made a 1.4 litre engine (so that, with the FIA's 1.4 turbo multiplier, it could qualify to race in the sub-2 litre division 1 class). So, this car has likely been restored to its original condition. And, with between 300-320 NA horsepower in one of the lightest cars on the grid, It's still reasonably quick as well.
flyingphoenix113 Great reply. Thanks for the info👍
You are correct... no boost. If the boost had been working, then the driver said he would have been up front battling with the Porsche 935's!
Great race, Is there a webpage detailing the specs on these e21 grp 5 cars? I'd love to learn more about them.
There you go: www.ultimatecarpage.com/spec/6630/BMW-320-Turbo-Group-5.html
I thought the 320i IMSA cars had a lot of power?!!
I’d dial in a tad more boost..
Could not of been the Turbo engine.. Very slow..
