Truly is beautiful. Sometimes I think I over-romanticize that drive in my memory. But it's legit pretty fantastic. Great place to clear you head and listen to great songs on the stereo. Everyone should take the route at least once.
Fond memories of a bike trip made in the early 80s by bicycle from SF to LA when I used to be a bicycle racer (USCF CAT 3) and got tired of justice putting in miles around the old home ground in The OC. We had covered the 20 or so miles from Carmel and turned to the corner to engage the Bixby bridge only to catch the first staggering glimpse of it, the beautiful Pacific, the offshore fog, and feel a stiff 35 knot wind at our backs. It was downhill with the wind and I was in the big ring and spun out going in excess of 50 mph all the way down to Big Sur. What a day!
Nice Phantom footage! Interesting to see a mini type drone a fairly near miss toward the end, but wonder what model it could’ve been in 2018. I’ve been here recently and nearly fell foul of the two hanging power cables beneath her!
One of the most picturesque bridges in the world. I encountered it during a motorcycle trip (from Windsor Ontario) during the late seventies. Of all the gems along US One , this is the diamond. How often do you have to lean a bike while crossing a bridge? I also remember stopping at the northern scenic view and taking it all in before I crossed over. My one regret is that I didn't backtrack and linger just a little bit longer...
Built in 1932 it was, at the time, the highest single span concrete arch bridge in the world. It was built under budget for the adjusted equivalence in 2020 of under 4 million USD. Steel was considered but the maintenance costs of a coastal steel bridge (think Golden Gate) were thought to be too high. It is a gorgeous bridge.

It's amazing this bridge cost only $200,000 to build? Can't imagine what it would cost today? Would be in the millions. Beautiful video tho. The music tho! Both together make me sad for some reason? So beautiful and tranquil, yet reality is a whole different thing.
Thanks. I selected the music for it's tranquility, as the experience in person is somewhat tranquil, remote, and a far away feeling, being away from the hubbub of city life 20mi north. That coastline is quite peaceful and serene at most turnouts. Nice drive.
