    Helpful video. Wanted to be sure about the placement of everything. As mentioned before this man did forget the this plastic washer. Do not forget that washer. Also the placement of the valve position does matter. From what I have learned it should be in the same position as original or toward the back of the tank if you’re not sure.

    TH-cam is an amazing resource. I was having problems removing my Kohler Wellworth flush handle (i.e. trip lever). I couldn't easily slide the nut over the right angle turn on the plastic lever arm, and I didn't want to force it because 99% off the time I will break things. I gave up and searched youtube and yours was the 4th video on the subject. I fast forwarded to your part where you removed the nut, and low-and-behold you had the same problem I encountered. You confirmed that you had to give the nut some persuasion and give it a good "tug". It worked, and I think this was the first time I didn't break the object I was working on. Bravo to your video and thanks for taking the time to post it!

    I have the exact Kohler two piece and after replacing the fill valve, I realized that it is the flush valve that is the problem. I have a handyman friend who is very good with his job but had never replace a Kohler flush valve before. You videos help us so much. Very details and clear step by step instructions. Thank you for your wonderful video.

    Appreciated the vid, helped a lot! Couple of tips that helped me... a) instead of a plumbers wrench I bought a 2.5 inch hexagonal wrench for toilet flush valve nut . Fit the exterior gasket/nut perfectly. Got it cheaper on ebay. 2) even after replacing the flush valve, I was still seeing a slow drain from the tank to the toilet. Eventually discovered that the top of the drain hole in the bottom of the tank had a slight imperfection that was allowing water through. Solution was to smear waterproof silicone faucet grease onto the gasket at the bottom of the flush valve (the one that seats inside the tank) and also around the top rim of the drain hole itself. It worked, at least for now. Can't say it will last a long time, we'll see.

    I bought the Kohler silent fill valve and flush valve kits on Amazon. They were both Kohler original parts. Based the purchases on the number inside the tank lid, and a Kohler list of parts that I found online for my particular toilet unit.
    Found this great instruction video for the flush valve. Great info. Realized that I would also need plumbers pliers, I purchased those in the midst of the replacement, however, I’m not sure they were as useful as they could have been because the “nut” is recessed 🤷🏻‍♀️ in the big black washer thingy and very hard to tighten with the pliers due to that. Also, I’m a woman and it was really difficult to ensure the valve inside the tank didn’t turn, which it did several times while tightening the nut on the outside bottom of the tank. That was a lesson in frustration. I didn’t have the strength to hold the valve with one hand in the tank, while tightening with the other hand 😳. That took me a while of checking, loosening the nut, realigning the valve, and doing it again, and again, and again. One or two more hands would have been better, but I’m persistent and wanted to get it done today. I got it all together, also replacing the flush handle and the water supply line. When I was cleaning up, a big plastic washer fell out of the flush valve box. Upon looking at the box picture, it should have gone under the nut. I rechecked this video and it appears it was also missed in the video. So will take all apart tomorrow and redo with that big washer 😫.
    I have a socket set which really helped in the tight space under the tank to tighten the three bolts (tank to bowl) with the ratchet wrench.
    I’ve done the above in the past for another toilet. I do not remember it taking me as long as it did today…and certainly do not remember the recessed nut. The design of that recessed nut and black washer that envelopes it is just a head shaker for sure. Why????
    At any rate…thank you for the how to. It helped to see someone actually do an instillation with the same parts.
    Edit July 12, 2021: took the tank off again this a.m. to insert the plastic washer under the valve nut that was in the box, but not used as I had not seen it prior to watching this video, and did not find it till after I was done yesterday (it goes between the black gasket and the nut that secures the valve under the tank). Miraculously (or not so 😅) the valve did not turn this time when tightened with the correct plastic washer, that again, does come in the box. It was literally a breeze to tighten with the plumbers pliers with the washer. Just ensure you use it…even if the video does not indicate it.

      I need to perform the same repair given a Kohler toilet tank-to-base interface gasket leak. Anticipating that getting the 2+" plastic nut off would be a challenge, even with plumber's pliers, after some research I found the "2.5-Inch Wrench (for toilet flush valve nut) - Solid HDPE plastic" custom wrench offered by GarrenToolCompany via eBay and ordered it. Looks like the perfect solution. Hopefully that will make quick and easy work of the nut removal and replacement without damage to the parts. I'll let you know.

    There is a part in the box that he does not mention. It is a thin flat washer that fits onto the threads of the flush valve, between the black 3 prong gasket and the large nut. At 12:40 in the video, he does not put the washer in place. It may or may not act as an additional gasket but what it definitely does is eliminate the friction between the nut and the black rubber, making it easier to tighten the nut.

      *THE FLAT WASHER UNDER THE NUT IS IMPORTANT. IT STOPS THE NUT FROM RIPPING INTO THE RUBBER. THE THIN METAL ALSO HELPS DISTIBUTE THE TIGHTENING LOAD EQUALLY AMONGST THE RUBBER. AS THE TANK MOVES FROM WEIGHT OF WATER AND VIBRATES, WHEN SOMEONE SITS,, THIS MAY LEAK WITHOUT IT, AT SOME POINT. AS TANK SETTLES.* THE BOX SHOWS MORE WASHERS/GASKETS? ARE THERE MORE PARTS YOU CHOSE NOT TO INSTALL? DID YOU REUSE THE SUPPLY LINE? AT START MENTIONED WILL BE A NEW ONE. HAVE A CONNECTED SHARK BITE HATE TO THROW IT OUT. GREAT VIDEO!!!

      Replaced the my Kohler flush valve and there are no leaks. Thank you so much for this video. It saved me a lot of time and mistakes.. Just as an aside, I have a Kohler K4512. The bolt kit that Kohler recommended this toilet came with a lot of gaskets that were not necessary. Just the bolt, a thin gasket that was used before with the old bolt, a washer and a nut were all that were needed. Part diagrams can be found at kohler.com/serviceparts.

    Mr. Leeman, you forgot the slip washer that goes on the three lobe rubber gasket under the tank. I don't know why Kohler does not supply it with the flush valve or whoever the maker of the valve is. You need this slip washer between the Nut and the gasket because the nut will friction too much on the rubber therefore wrinkling the rubber gasket and then be prone to leak.

    Great video, Tom - very helpful. At time stamp 17:45 you are re-using the old plastic nuts that you removed at time stamp 4:00. Then later, at time stamp 19:35 one of the retaining nuts is visible and again at 19:47 - the rearmost nut they are the metal nuts that came with the kit. Was there some issue with the plastic nut you were trying to re-use?

    • @TomLeeman
      @TomLeeman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question you could’ve use the old plastic ones that I took off but I found that I didn’t need that rubber washer and it was easier just to put on the metal washer and nut, but anything that will hold it or pull it and make a good seal should work Good luck and thanks for watching
