They usually buy the console on credit and then get some old second hand game disks for very cheap. And even a crappy internet lets you have some multiplayer fun albeit with some lag, instead cloud gaming requires a strong and stable bandwidth for a game to be playable, which is not necessarily available to everyone, not even in the US for that matter.

@@akin242002 The issue you have is that companies can and do discontinue support of old e-store fronts. This would be less of a problem if IP laws aged out after 20 years. All it takes is microsoft deciding one day that they don't want to do upkeep on games prior to 2010 (because they want to sell you the remakes) and your games are gone with a press of a button.

My apartment complex only has 2 isp choice (not counting the crap satellite) At&t or locally owned Volcano. At&t only offers their slowest DSL which regularly gets bogged down to the point where I turn off my wifi on my phone and just use my data because it's faster. Not every game is over 100 gigs and can easily fit on a Blu-ray. I would still like physical releases for game preservation purposes so companies can’t just write them off as losses for taxes and never re-release them. Then you are scr3wed when their digital storefront shuts down and your hard drive or ssd does and leaves you with nothing for your trouble. Corporations want you to own nothing and like it. That’s why subscription services are killing our beloved gaming industry and so many other software and hardware industries too. Locking basic functionality behind a paywall is the worst kind of corporate greed and the FTC needs to do something about it like actually enforce their own laws proactively not after enough people complain about it.

The problem with digital vs physical, is that you've paid for the game. If the game is still on the disk, then you have the game files... On the disk, in front of you. It only takes 1 passionate individual to modify those game files and get the game working for the community again with an unofficial patch, even if they need to start their own servers, it's not that big of a deal if you like the game.
To add to that, the amount of things that can go wrong testing and evaluating a digital only copy is mind boggling. From games I have participated in testing, physical copies are my favourite.

Pretty sure they want to avoid another fiasco like the the Xbox One Launch. another possibility is to mess with Playstation and see how they react. of course there was a rumor that there would be a new Playstation strategy which the new system is the same regardless and you can buy a BDRom drive seperately(your possible mention reminded me) why not have the same on the xbox side of things. I highly doubt the leaks are all finalized regardless.

Heres another thing in a lot of countries internet costs are stupid expensive even my country of origin in the middle east, prices there are pretty damn steep for data packages and the unli data packages, with that physical media helps a lot Im buying the game anyway install whats there and just patch the game from what shipped on it, until now discs are still being shipped with newer versions of the software on them if you get a newer print version. Even on indie games, dead cells when you buy physically across all platforms I think will come with the game and all DLCs on the physical media, sniper elite 3 remastered or the complete edition I think, just pop the game in and no updates it has the latest patch. The ghosts of tsushima directors cut doent need patches its complete and ready to play from the disc, at least the one I got recently. Thats still compelling vs waiting hours for a download

Digital download of video games is already here and the future. Because most video gamers seem to prefer it over buying physical disc. I buy video games only by digital download theses days.
But i still buy films on DVD instead of digital download. I do have some films bought via digital download, but they are a small amount of my films collection. On DVD i get the entire film content plus some bonus extras. You don't always get the entire video game on the physical disc. Having still need to go online, and download further things like game patches. Personally i don't want to buy video game disc and then still need to go online to patch games. Makes sense to just digital download video games instead, as long as you have good speed internet connection.
