I don't think it counts as too much, since these expensive handhelds are still just niche. Switch and Steam Deck are the only ones that are mainstream, affordable, and accessible to people that don't want PC jank. Yeah, Sony and MS are the only ones with a real shot besides the two you mentioned. They can subsidize the price enough to make it attractive and they already have solid interfaces people are familiar with. Everyone else is just eating scraps until they give up and move on. Handheld PCs are coming out. The Switch is still the only handheld console in the market (assuming you are not counting 3ds and Vita). Also why do people act as if handheld systems are some kind of a new concept. Handhelds have existed since the day of the Game & Watch. Gameboy, GBA, DS, 3ds, PSP, PS Vita, Game Gear, etc. all exist.

I think any sort of question of "too many" is coming at the question from the wrong angle. Sure, having 50 different consoles like the PS5 or XBONE is (arguably) a bad thing as it fragments the market as companies are incentivized to get console exclusives. However, there is no chance of these devices fragmenting the market as they are because they all pull from the steam game base. To me this question is more similar to asking if there are too many laptops on the market. Which unless you are looking at it from a very specific angle (choice paralysis and potential for buy overpriced duds due to lack of research) this is undoubtedly a good thing. It's a bunch of companies competing to make the best product they can for their chosen price point which incentivizes them to innovate and not rest on their laurels(cough, Nintendo, cough).

One of the greatest "tricks" the Steam Deck has that other handhelds just can't achieve, is keeping pretty playable stats when running in 10W mode. I wonder if these newer Z1 chips will be able to keep up the playability of games at much lower TDPs in the same way - because power and high performance is great, but battery life matters _way_ more for a handheld. So that really needs to be targeted specifically and I honestly have my doubts.

We have the power to play our PC games anywhere with desktops (mini and the "normal" towers), laptops, and the variety of handheld PC devices out now. Phones are wonderfully viable options thanks to many of the games from indie devs appearing on Android and iOS, along with streaming options from Sony, Microsoft, Steam, and nVidia. It is one hell of a time to be alive!

Use an a console controller with a $20 clip or buy a Razer Kishi if you got the budget and save spending even more on a device, while also not having to carry around another. Streaming, pointless for many people so no opinion and it's pretty much available on everything with a screen. Everyone else is just flooding into a tiny niche market of $700-$1500 handheld PC's. What we need is a portable device that can allow users to buy game cards. That way games can be heavily optimized while also giving the users the ability to do normal pc stuff, like how the steam deck works but better

Back when the Microsoft Xbox game pass PC app and the Microsoft app store was heavily advertised for Windows 10, 6 years ago. Microsoft could have made an Xbox edition Surface pro or even some other portable computer that let you play the Xbox Game pass app on the go. Another thing is all these handheld gaming pc's all have there own flaws. For starters is that the Steam platform requires you have internet to access your Steam library and same goes with most of the other gaming distribution stores like the ones from Ubisoft, Epic Games, EA, Microsoft, and others. But there will always be that battery life and storage issues on these devices. Along with the weird unstandardized sizing and button layouts.

Man, I remember when handhelds were said to be dead. No one is gone to want a handheld system, when you have a phone.
And that was when the 3DS was coming out.
Then those people said the 3DS would be the last handheld. And then the Switch happened.
Boy, it sure is a strange world we live in, ever since handheld gaming systems went extinct. ;p

Looking forward to the Ally, but I'm beyond tired of Windows as the only viable gaming platform. Steam Deck has proven once and for all that Linux is viable competition, something we Linux users have been saying for years. The flood of Windows handhelds just perpetuates the shittiness that is Windows. I very much want an Ally, but I will be putting some form of Linux/SteamOS on it.

Yeah and the last time Sony tried to compete with Nintendo on the handheld side, they got kicked badly. The DS sold double of what the PSP sold and the 3ds slaughtered the Vita. Sony is best left making home consoles. There is a reason why Microsoft backed away from the handheld market. They were looking to make one back during the PSP and DS days.

I waited for the ROG ally and ended up just getting the Steam Deck. After using the switch i just cant deal with another flat handheld. Also if i spending this much money id like a flushed out and intuitive experience from the UI.
Ive been going back and forth whether i made the right decision but im pretty confident ill be pleased.

i think i’m gonna do the same. always wanted a gaming pc but with less time to play due to college and the crazy cost barrier it’s just not worth it. also have a ps5 and a macbook so it would feel a little redundant lol. these two are my main contenders. i don’t really wanna be an early adopter to the ally though and steamOS is so flushed out now, with the option to dual boot onto windows WITH driver support from valve. the rog software seems like crap from what i’ve heard even on pcs so i don’t have much faith. and their customer support also sounds really bad. the only con i can think of is worse performance when docked on the steam deck vs the ally. that’s just my thinking, hoping to order the steam deck this month i hope my points gave u a little reassurance on ur decision :)

The issue is it really depends on early adopters and sales. You could get the ROG and they decide to give up because Steam is outselling them. Then you're stick without much, if any support.

I legit agree with Microsoft needing to make an Xbox handheld that isn't just a cloud gaming device (but can cloud game). It would probably take over a good market share of the handheld space. The rest of the handheld market is far too niche, not enough support, and the steam deck will likely be the main squeeze for a long time coming for people who want to play pc games and do some cloud and retro gaming. Very few people comparatively want to be paying full budget pc price for handhelds, and likely already have good enough PCs and cloud gaming options already on hand (says guy with a switch, pc, xbox, ps4, and some retro handhelds)

I'm still waiting for a handheld with ray tracing with gaming from the internal storage using nvme ssds with the option to choose the resolution like 1080p, 2k and even 4k and refresh rates like 120 hz to 240 hz. Like the Intel nuc beast canyon in a handheld device but with upgradeable nvme ssd and upgradeable ram, 1,000 nits brightness mini led or micro led display. Something sony could make with collaboration with nvidia for ray tracing and the cpus from amd and Intel as well but it would be very expensive. Being able to overclock the cpu, gpu with msi after burner with a desktop cpu while also overclocking the ram with xmp. Have the displays manufactured from lg and samsung. For example, the pi max portal highest end version is a handheld device that has a 4k 144 hz mini led display that runs android and supports 5g but the option to run full fledge windows pc games instead of game streaming but game streaming as option for those that want to game stream but support gaming natively from steam, epic games, gog games etc. I have the sony xperia 1 iv android phone with a 4k 120 hz oled display and I play bright memory, ark survival evolved for mobile since both games are pc ports on mobile and I'm still waiting for call of duty war zone to be available on mobile. Bright memory has rtx on pc but ark survival evolved does not support rtx even on the pc version. I'm hoping that very high fidelity visual gaming will be available in a handheld like I mentioned about the pi max portal 4k display.

The 3rd party handhelds would have to create their own service like steam, or find a way to get some profits from the services that are supported on their devices. Like they get X% for allowing xbox cloud, or steam cloud. Or change their product type from generic handhelds to niche feature packed stuff. Otherwise, I don't have much motivation to not buy 1st party when its cheaper and runs the games better and easier
