Here is my opinion on pro shots: I love them. If it were not for disney plus, I would not have seen Hamilton. I love it and it is nice to have access to it especially with it being the original cast. I also am broke and cannot afford tickets. However, I think proshots will only work if the play is longstanding. Let it be successful for a few years so people do not feel like oh this new, i have easy access to it and I do not need to see it in person. I do not think this would be the case, but people are lazier now and do not want to deal with the chaos, staying in a hotel, and dealing with traffic.
I think this would be a good metric but maybe add shows that close without the probability of reopening... Like currently I'm dying internally because I'll never get to see Beetlejuice... I would kill for a proshot of that, or also Hunchback of Notre Dame I've kind of fallen in love with the cast recording

Yeah if it wasn’t for national tours I wouldn’t have seen Wicked twice, Legally Blonde, Beauty and the Beast twice or Memphis or be getting to see Frozen this September. I agree there should be more pro shots of musicals.
Yeah I’d love pro shots too, but I don’t think it’s likely that there will be more of them as it’s pretty expensive to film, edit, produce, and whatever else needs to happen with them, but I’m sure that more will come out soon! Beetlejuice was apparently going to film a pro shot before they shut the theatres, but I think they might film something once they get the rights to do it!
I don’t know if y’all heard but Broadway is planning to open back up 100% on September 14 and I thought it would be cool if y’all did a intelligent drinking game on Broadway opening back up.
I wish broadway was more international😭😭😭 Actually, i wish productions were more international😭😭😭 (as in not just mainly US and UK) (also please feel free to tell me if there's something i don't know. I wasn't very familiar with Broadway and all till like last year)
Thank you Sam for addressing the price issues. That and more proshots would definitely help with the bootleg thing. Broadway being inaccessible to people like me who live in the Midwest = bootlegs because there is no other way of watching a show on a farm especially with ASD.
This is honestly so insightful!!! I've only became a really invested Broadway fan in the last couple years or so, and I live in Vancouver, Canada, and I've never had the luxury of seeing a Broadway show, so I don't know all of the minutiae of it. Hearing all of this just really gives me hope that one day when I do get to see a show, it'll be more inclusive, diverse, and accessible than ever!! 💜
The first show that came to my mind when you asked “what show would you love to see on Broadway” was The Last Five Years. One of my all time favorite shows and I’m so glad Sam mentioned it! I would absolutely love to see that show on Broadway!!
For me, it is the hunchback of notre dame. It is a spectacular score. I love the mixing of original sings with the disney classics from the film. I like how they added to the story of both the book and film. Money for making it should never have been an excuse. Also the dang union thing should not have been a factor either. I do not mean the formation of an union, but rejecting continuing the production because said unions.
When Ryan said “a symptom not a cause” and the hand motions with “a symptom of systematic greed” I simultaneously had a Rocky Horror and JD flashback. Loved the point you two talked about! ❤️
Pro shots are perfect for those of us who can’t afford to go to Broadway or those who can’t afford to go to see national tours because they can be pricey too depending on your budget. Also personally I feel like pro shots will only make someone see the musical in person more if they enjoy it. It can get them pumped to see it in person. I mean let’s be honest I feel like most Broadway musical fans who watch the bootlegs would be more than willing to pay for pro shots of musicals. I know I certainly would.
This is so insightful, especially what Ryan said at the end about how actors are being treated. It's so true that you don't really stand up for yourself because you're afraid of them just replacing you if you speak up. I still battle with that all the time and sadly I mostly keep my mouth shut, because I don't want to be labeled as "difficult to work with" (for standing up for your basic rights) and not get jobs in the future.

The only professional theatre I've seen are National Tours. I've never seen a show on Broadway - I grew up in Los Angeles. My HUGE love for musical theatre and Broadway comes from tours. The performers I've seen on tours are SO talented, and I hate that they're not valued as much as Broadway performers!!! Also 100% agree with the accessibility stuff. I've been saving up for a while to be able to see my first Broadway show - hopefully this October I'll get the chance!!!

Oh My God! Accessibility!! yes!! thank you Sam! I live in Israel and ever since I was little and my mom took me to see a production of The Sound of Musica on stage I have been in love with musical theater and dreamt of going to Broadway to see a show - but even after shows like Newsies and Hamilton made it possible to watch (and let's face it -rewatch) the show from the comfort of my home - there's no replacement for actually being there! feeling it - knowing that you and the performers on stage are going through this ride together right then and there. Na Ah - I am more likely to spend my savings on a "once in a lifetime experience" I know I will enjoy and go see a performance I know I love and have always dreamt of experiencing live rather than trying my luck with a show I am not that familiar with.
I also think we talk to little about the actual physical accessibility of broadway. Broadway theaters are so cramped and hard to navigate, from the fact that wheelchair seats are super had to get, to there being no way to leave temporarily during a performance for any reason without upsetting people. The culture is honestly just so inaccessible, but so many people think it has to be that way for tradition, even though theater in this format is not a constant throughout history. I mean heck, in the 1700s there was no expectation of sitting at all, opera houses looked like dinner parties with standing tables with a stage on one side and a VISIBLE orchestra, with food and mingling throughout the performance. Broadway shouldn't have to mean that you go and sit still in a tiny seat in a huge overfilled theater in the dark for 2 consecutive hours with no food or water (i know concessions exist but the prices are so hiked and people who actually need to eat don't have the luxury of only eating silent foods) and be shamed if you talk or look at your phone. That reality is just so inaccessible for so many people.

The first time Hamilton came around, *one* ticket was a minimum of $400. I didn't check the exact prices the second time because I knew I wouldn't be able to afford them either way, but I would not be surprised if they were even more expensive.
I loved the Tony awards performance of Anything Goes!!! I could watch it over and over. I love the last five years as well!!! Haha it would be fun to see it live on Broadway.
JRB gets absolutely s*** on by Broadway and it sucks. This man has contributed so many shows to Broadway but a lot of them underperform. 13, Bridges of Madison County, Parade, Urban Cowboy, Honeymoon in Vegas, and Songs for a New World! As someone who lives in Ireland I’ve never had the privilege of seeing a Broadway show but I have seen several in the west end and I was wondering what are the main differences between Broadway and the west end?
In terms of accessibility I think we also have to talk about people who are from different countries, like myself, and probably will never be able to have a trip to the broadway. Yet I am still here and would happily support the community there with my money and my passion. Broadway is very protective of itself. I also rarely heard of performers there who are not native americans, yet I know so many brilliant performers from all over the world. Also most of the shows played on Broadway are american or british. But there are great new musicals emerging all over the world and if they would come to broadway, since that is THE place for musicals, they would be able to reach a much greater audience and also the points of view would be more diverse (which they should be anyway if you consider the lack of female composers for example and the lack of women and people of color in leading creative positions in general). And talking about accessibility: shows like deaf west's spring awaikening definitely also spread awareness for the lack of oppertunities for people with disabilities in the musical theatre industry in general (I don't know how good the accessibility for audience members with disabilities on broadway is but in german theaters this also is a huge problem there). So yeah: give ALL people the opportunity to enjoy and enrich theatre.
I agree with basically everything you both said here. I’m very concerned about the future of broadway after the pandemic. I want there to be change, but I’m honestly very pessimistic. It was just announced the other day that a mini revival of waitress would be coming (likely so they can film a proshot). This is great but the producers of waitress (Barry and Fran Weissler) have similar reputations to Rudin in the way they treat others. This just says to me that broadway won’t be changing much.
And sharing more also means that more people will have access and maybe make it to the "top", as in they might lose the power if the thing becomes more accessible
My uncles fav musical is Les mis and i’ve never be lucky enough to see a musical live. He told me that he wants to take me to see les mis in london soon!
