Interesting way to replace the rail , crossties and clips secured with bolts . I retired from Union Pacific Railroad as a Welded Rail Train operator/Supervisor . Our rail trains hauled 50 strings of continuos welded rail that were 1440 feet long , now they weld their rail in lengths of close to 2000 feet . We also picked up the old rail and would cut the rail when we got full strings on the rail train . Take the trains to one of our welding plants and they would classify , cut and reweld the rail for use in sidings , yards and rail lines with a slower maximum speed . Very interesting video .
Railroads are universal. But, it is absolutely fascinating to see the similarities and differences of applied technology and technique in different parts of the world. I have personally spent time with 80- and 90-year-old retired African-American railroad workers (called Gandy Dancers, after their tools that were made by the Gandy Manufacturing Company and their rhythmic, perfectly syncopated, hammer blows that drove the spikes into the wooden railroad ties) and with the latest computer-assisted rail-laying technology used in the USA. This video captures an absolutely fascinating middle ground between the two: some automation, but crucial steps performed by the skilled railroad workers. The welding of the joint between the ends of two rails was astounding. They actually assemble mini BLAST FURNACES over each "weld" and then create the 2,750 degrees Fahrenheit (1,510 degrees Celsius) temperatures required to melt and fuse the steel rails with pyrotechnics! (In the US, this would be done by automated electro-arc welding.) When one considers that this is performed thousands of times to build and maintain hundreds or thousands of kilometers of rail lines, it is truly awe-inspiring. Thank you for this wonderful view of how, globally, we have differences, but we have so much more in common, regardless of where we live! Thank you!
Interesting that they used Thermite welds to join the new rail. In the US they use a direct kind of electrical weld to join rail pieces together without adding extraneous alloys, at least in practice.
@@jamesb.9155 This depends on the situation. The electrical variant is called flash welding (also often referred to as "flash butt welding"). With the thermite method you only need a pre-defined gap between the two rails. Then you pre heat the ends and weld it with a thermite cartridge (usually a single use bucket). When you use flash welding one of the rails needs to be moveable. This means, you don't only have to apply the electrical current, but you also have to pres the two rails together (perfectly aligned). That's not possible if both rails are already mounted on the ties.
