  • Aaron Lansky runs the Yiddish Book Center in Massachusetts. Over the past 40 years, it has gone from an idea that many dismissed, to an institution of higher learning. Jeff Glor has more.

Oh, this lifted my heart. This isn't my culture specifically, but what I was always proud of about my country growing up was that we were the country where all the world's cultures were celebrated, and we were enriched by them all. As I got older, I found that maybe I'd been too idealistic, and in the past few years it's broken my heart how far we've strayed from that ideal. But I still believe in it, and I have to believe we will find our way back to it. This story and others like it give me hope.

This is brilliant. My grandma used to use Yiddish phrases when she was upset, or very happy. I remember some. Glad to see it's being preserved. Thanks.

This gives me goosebumps, too! Such an amazing, heroic effort. Culture does matter to illuminating our shared humanity.

The report does not mention that Aaron Lansky was caught pushing his way into the homes of elderly Jews and forcibly taking their Yiddish books. As a young man he did this over and over. The books he robbed are now part of the library he established.
