I am paying a lot to get refresher classes (partly because I don’t have a car), thank you Richard for all the “lessons” I got on TH-cam for free, you are an incredible teacher!!
After 10 sessions of driving practice I lost the hope I can ever drive. Mostly when I was seeing other people that had perfect center sense in their first time. This is Real Issue for some people and I never thought someone had this explained. Great job 👍🏼
This is very true, some do it naturally, some take a bit of time and about 10% really struggle but get there with practise. As far as I can tell it's mostly fear that seems to get in the way and cause some to over think it.
I am also taking lessons but my instructor is not teaching these tips yesterday i went on road it was hell really as soon as i pressed gas pedal it seemed it will loose control over car so what to do for smooth driving on straight and curved road plz help me i need its video with clear depiction of your foot placement
You are so incredible at teaching, honestly whoever gets taught by you is very very lucky. Thank you for the video, you have helped me solve my hardest problem with driving in just 6 minutes
Exactly my thought! He is incredible! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a teacher like him here in Greece. His students are VERY lucky! Even if I pass,I will still come back to his channel whenever I feel the need to find a solution. "Thank you" is not enough, is too little for his life lessons.❤❤❤❤
I'm teaching my teenager to drive and since I'm not a driving instructor I haven't put a lot of thought into things like "how do you know how to center the car?" I just do it after decades of driving, like instinct. So I turned to TH-cam for ideas and found these videos. Tips like the ones you share here are GOLD. So easy to give her something specific, easy, and which totally works instead of "you'll just know after a while" kinds of answers. Of course being across the pond in the USA I have to flip all the left/rights to the correct ones 😄 Well done, I'm actually watching these and thinking "oh, that's clever. I wish someone had said that to me when I was a learner".
I've already passed my test a few months ago but was still struggling with judging the width of my car. I'm overthinking wayyyy to much. I think what you said is the key to solve my problem "Dont think about the car too much and stay relaxed". Thank you.
I have been driving for years and 1:03 still breaks my relaxation. I keep the car in the center of the lane using your great technique but that moment when a car is coming quickly in a narrow road my brain just turns into survival mode for some reason and pushes me to focus on whether the oncoming car is crossing the line in the middle. Thanks for the great tips.
After watching your videos i realise my instructor only taught me how to pass my test and not how to drive. I passed the first time by the way and I've been driving 2 years now. but I've been putting the information you give in your videos to practice and I feel more confident and safer in driving now. thanks
I'm In my third week in driving class and my third time handling a car and anytime we would go for driving practicals this is usually my biggest challenge, staying aligned in the lane!! My instructor keeps telling me you have to stay in the middle but I don't know how,and for sure I knew there must be a hack thanks to this video, it's really helpful
This is the most effective instruction I've got for staying centred -- the left leg tip helps me keep looking at the centre and farther ahead. It's also helped me develop a better 'feel' for steering the car when I try to think of steering myself -- it makes driving feels more natural and less intimidating. Thank you Richard!
The bit about the negative feedback loop is very true, at first I barely realized I’m swerving in the lane but then people started road raging at me and I started focusing only on not swerving which made it even worse and then it just spirals out of control where driving becomes a nightmare and everyone is road raging at me. Great tip about aiming to drive where you need to go instead of aiming to avoid everything on the road that’s super helpful. Avoiding everything just adds to the negative feedback loop and makes the swerving worse. It’s embarrassing to focus so much on keeping your lane only for the swerving to get worse, it’s all based on paranoia and fear about a car accident, better that then being one of these fearless drivers who have no regard for anyone on the road though 😂
My driver instructor quit on me cause I've had 10 hours lesson and still can't steer a car properly. He said he can't teach slow learner as I'm a beginner. I find it difficult to steer a car in straight lines and always swerving to the kerb and other side of the road during the driving lessons. This video has helped me a lot to understand how to steer a car properly and maintain a straight line. You're a good driving instructor. Thank you so much 🙏.
Oh my frustrating days! I've been struggling with this thinking when will I ever know how to position the car correctly without being told "go left" "go right" every now & then... so now in my next lesson I shall test this out & see how it goes thanks so much for these tips. I'm a nervous wreck when driving I get so tense & I'm all sweaty by the end of it 🤦🏾♀️😩
I took this video to be as how to stay in your lane in life and applied each of his sentences metaphorically to my life. Surprised to say it made sense
OMG! this is what I do.. I try avoiding hitting the car to the right., and end up almost scratching the parked cars on the left... Thank you for this. Gona try it
Really great tips!! I watched this video a few days before my driving test, and I passed! Your advice was incredibly helpful and highly recommend this to anyone preparing for their test! You got this I promise!!!💓
I first learned that concept of "look exactly where you want to get because its super important" while learning to skiing. Interesting that applies here as well. Loved this! Thanks!
I just had to come back and thank you for this video. The past 2 weeks I've been doing my lessons and my instructor was pleased that I'm now able to stay on my lane. Kudos for this video👏👏👏all the way from South Africa 🇿🇦
I really need to get this in my head, my driving test was meant to be during COVID and was unfortunately cancelled but my instructor says my driving is really smooth and safe and I should pass but my biggest fault is still instinctively getting too close to parked cars
Another problem with new drivers is that they will often overcorrect their position meaning they often end up in the wrong position again and have to correct again... what they should understand is that... unless you are very close to hitting something... you should steer very lightly and allow the car to drift in the position where you should be... the closer to the position you are the less steering angle you should have until at the very end you can take the steering angle off with a very short move
I passed my test 8 years ago, I've been driving my parents car on and off since then but only recently got my own for the first time and now I'm constantly driving back and forwards to work. I'm on a single carriageway national speed limit road on the way home and this sort of lane weaving was a huge problem for me. Because of my lack of experience I'm always panicking about cars coming towards me quickly then the next minute trying to not go into a ditch. I was wondering why I couldn't just keep the car centred. This video is a huuuuuuge help. Thank you so much for this you don't know how appreciated it is. It makes my life so much easier. Hahaha
Hi Richard, thank you making these videos! I failed my first test for swerving to the left too much and with your “left leg” tip, and your other useful content, I was calm, collected, and passed today with 3 minors! So thank you very much from the bottom my my heart, all the way from Australia!
You’re such an amazing teacher, thanks for all of the videos! It’s helped me so much with starting driving again after 10 years of being too scared to drive since passing my test.
Thank you for the detailed teaching I can say I had watched many tutorials without results but I drove a manual car at once after watching one of your videos
Thank you so much for this video - we just got a new (small) SUV when I drove it for the first time I did all the things you cautioned not to do when I got out I told my husband I can't drive this car it is too big and too wide I can't judge the width of the car in relation to the road lane. I will watch all your videos now. You are a brilliant teacher.
Thank you from Belgium, my instructor makes me feel so stupid myself, he first instructed me like a teacher hundred yeas ago, I'm not speaking bad about him but my point of view every instructor should be informative for the first few hours. ❤❤❤
Hi all, I have passed yesterday first time. This channel taught me a lot Especially staying in the middle of the lane, how much to steer and when to stop steering. Thank you very much Richard for the helpful content.
This is what I needed!!! Thank you. I always feel as though I’m too wide, turn too soon, over steer, and micromanage as my bf says by looking at the pavement directly in front causing me to weave. He gave me the same advice if looking ahead and aiming. But you put it in perspective for me. My aunt also gave me the tip of finding the hood ornament, center crease in the hood, or the little nub of radio antenna in the center of the dash, and slinging that with the outside line of the lane.
Passed my test in May. I have to say a huge thank you, your videos explained things my driving instructor never touched on. Being able to watch them over and over then practice really made things stick. Think trying to teach Dory to drive 😂 Dont get me wrong my driving instructor was amazing but im menopausal so brain fog for me made the mans job nearly impossible. Throw in time off for 4 ops and id say the bloke deserves a medal for sticking with me, 😂
It has been ten years and I haven't had the guts to get behind the wheel. I just couldn't get the driving in the middle of the road from the right side of the car. I'm American, so imagine how hard it is, to switch from the left side to the right side of the car? Thank you so much for your fantastic video! I have the confidence to give it a go now. That was very useful. I've accompanied a number of people who tend to hug the kerb or the centre line. I will see if I can persuade them to adopt that approach. Thanks.
@@ConquerDriving The people I accompany have passed there test and want to be advanced but some just want a refresher or have lost their confidence for some reason. The latter are most likely to wander across the carriageway.
Its natural I think when learning to pull to left when you have car coming towards you plus a parked car. I think you have to judge is big enough if not I tend to hold back let the other go, then pass or even what my instructor told me slow down and a gap sorts itself which is such a useful tip and go slow and stay straight, but it is a skill in itself
I started going on the road yesterday and you are right I am most worried about what's coming in front of me. I'm definitely going to try this during my lesson today. Thank you.
Got my license a while ago and i forgot this tip and found myself drifting into the other lane on the highway. I was so embarrassed. I knew i had to watch your videos again
I have on coming drive test first week of August, God willing🙏 by watching your technique and everything hope and wish it will successful Goodluck to me😊
Lots of effort have been put into making this extremely useful video. Thank you so much for explaining how to keep our vehicle within lane and keep safe distance from others.
hi.... receive love all the way from Kenya... Your videos have helped me a lot!!! out here our driving instructors are rogue, they barely teach us any helpful road tips... all I learned was the road signs and how to maneuver on a model town board. meanwhile, the roads are the complete gheroooooo..... thank you for doing this.. you are saving lives!!!!! ❤💝
been out of the drivers seat for a number of years for health reasons. just got back in the drivers seat not long ago and finding it a bit difficult judging where my car is. thanks for the tips. heres hoping my driving improves more now.
Hey Richard this is the channel I was looking for months and I finally got it. Please make a video on how to judge the left side of the car. This is the problem many drivers faced when they first drive.
I am from pollachi,Tamilnadu .India. A TOWN WITH A POPULATION OF 1LAKH.As a beginner your presentation is extraordinary. Specially using graphics helps a lot.to find out the dos and don'ts. Thanks a lot
I’m 17 and just started learning and this is my only struggle, I still don’t get it :( but your recent video on blip upshifting was amazing and helped so much!!
I felt so low after today's class. I have had 15 classes so far and am practising driving with my husband frequently. But still can't get it right. Both my husband and instructor yells at me for not keeping my car in lane. My instructor tells me the same "look at where u r going , you are looking too close that's why you are doing the snake thingy" but i couldn't understand what he was telling me. But I think I have a better idea now after seeing your video ,which I will put to practice.
Drove for the second time today, everything in this video (except roundabouts because I haven’t done that yet) is exactly what I need. Whenever I’m too Close to the curb my dad just tells me “your too close to the curb” which makes me focus on the curb and it makes me steer to far out (what you talked about in the beginning) so the whole drive today was mostly that I was too close and too far ETC. I’m hoping to use the information from this video to good use during my next drive. I’ll try not to annoy my father again 😅
I’ve had my permit since I was 16 and I’m 18 now just starting to drive a lot and none of my family has given me useful tips to get over driving anxiety or how to stay in the center, I’m always to far to the left or right, this helped a lot
Staying centered is my biggest mistake on driving school and I am past 22nd hour of driving (of minimum 35 in total). Thus I can't focus on anything else because I am so frustrated. My instructor just said that I keep my hands on the wrong part of the wheel and have bad eye-hand coordination (I have been playing piano over 20 years and my coordination is fine). Thank you so much for this video, as the other one I saw a couple months back about the same thing with looking right in front and not in distance (I think it was about turns). That one helped me so much!
You're not alone, someone of my pupils really struggle with steering for a long time. They usually get better when they relax and stop over thinking it, the easier the road the more chance there is of relaxing.
Im having trouble steering correctly and my instructor was just saying 'it comes with experience', but I believed there was a technique involved. This video really gave me that tip! Thank you!
I see, maybe thats why i feel tense all the time while driving cause i started learning in busy streets making me feel the possible hazards even in empty roads..
I have a learning difficulty with spatial awareness and being able to measure distance/space with my eyes. This video highlighted my exact problem, so I'll give your advice a go on my next lesson. Thank you!
Yes, but if there are no oncoming vehicles then there is no point bouncing around in the crumbly bit of road on the left edge, go right a little bit over the line and its soo much quieter and nicer, quite a revelation.. then pull back into the left.. I noticed this due to oncoming cars doing the same, as you see them they see you and pull to the left to give more room.. Only problem is like mentioned in this video, some people pull too far left and you don't want to come completely off the road
Hi Michael, I think he is referring to the black stripe in the middle of the lane from tyre wear. I use this all the time, I can't believe I forgot to include it in this video.
This video as well as other ones on this channel has helped me become more confident in learning to drive and to help me have fun during the process. Before, I would do as you mentioned in the start, focusing too much on the curb so I end up too close to the other lane vice versa. Another tip I remeber seeing, not sure if on this channel or another, "Don't focus on the problem, but focus on the solution".
As someone that is learning to drive, I do struggle with this in general... but also on many other occasions. When I am changing gears or checking my left and center mirror which is about it and this really mainly happens when I am driving quicker.
Thanks a mil. You solved my a big problem that was holding me back. Though I drove few years before I wasn’t used to curbs that are not visible on the left. So I was struggling to understand how to estimate my left properly while keeping good space in my right. Your tips were fantastic and they immediately made sense. I did a drive after mapping it in my head and I was able to drive in the centre with ease. Really really appreciate these tips.
You’re right if you practice on roads that’s scare you it affects your confidence it’s better to practice in places you feel more comfortable. 💯👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏👏
Wish my driving instructor had taken me somewhere quiet and simple at the start. I remember having to drive on a busy central London main road at rush hour during my first lesson 😩 Have since been an incredibly anxious driver ahhaa These are a godsend, though 😻

I’m from the USA and found this very helpful. Thank you.
I learn a lot from the video. As a beginner I have trouble keeping my car centered in one lane. Now i'm gonna try this next driving lesson.
You may find my video on how to judge the width of your car helpful.
you are the best teacher l swear
Thank you so much for this...I tried it today and my instructor who was disappointed by my driving said i improved today.😊
I'm happy to hear it helped.
I’m from the USA, and I used all your videos to prepare for driving on the left side of the road. Thank you! Thank you !
I'm very happy to hear that, I hope you enjoy the UK.
@@ConquerDriving I’m having a blast in Belfast! And I’m driving with my left leg as my guide! Thank you!
I started going on the road yesterday and you are right I am most worried about what's coming in front of me. I'm definitely going to try this during my lesson today. Thank you.
Same here ☹️
What to do 🙁
Got my license a while ago and i forgot this tip and found myself drifting into the other lane on the highway. I was so embarrassed. I knew i had to watch your videos again
I have on coming drive test first week of August, God willing🙏 by watching your technique and everything hope and wish it will successful Goodluck to me😊
Goodluck!
@@littleduckjesus4291 thank you😊
@@roma7923np, that test is coming up soon. I believe in you.
Mad respect this guy is still responding. Thanks bro, I needed this!
You're welcome. I'll try my best to respond to as many as possible.
You are the world's best teacher
Passing through eyes 👀, love from Uganda 🇺🇬 East Africa
been out of the drivers seat for a number of years for health reasons. just got back in the drivers seat not long ago and finding it a bit difficult judging where my car is. thanks for the tips. heres hoping my driving improves more now.
I tried this today & it worked well.
Didnt hv to keep looking at my side mirrors.
Thank u so much! 💜
Thanks for fixing all of my life problems
Bro, I am a novice driver in South Africa. You have helped me a lot. Thanks
Hey Richard this is the channel I was looking for months and I finally got it. Please make a video on how to judge the left side of the car. This is the problem many drivers faced when they first drive.
Thank you, I have an earlier video on stopping at the side of the road.
Yes please do it...my instruction keep saying I am not judging right....also my transitions,
This is really useful for me, I got the hand of turning really quickly it's just when I am driving in a straight lane is when I struggle.
Thanks, I just drove a 5 hour drive on the highway for the first time and my dad was yelling at me about staying in my lane
Amazing explanation, thank you. My instructor did not explain how to stay in the center and was annoyed when I didn't.
This is such a better tip then people telling me to just stay on the lane.
Thank you and you're welcome!
Thank you this help me a lot
Thank you very much ,,am on lesson 5 today and am still struggling to remain on my lane. I will try this
@@cecilianthenya5758 this is me I just completed my lesson 5 and steer either too left or too right it’s so frustrating.
Thank you for helping me with this matter. It helped me more confident since I watched this video. And I finally passed it yesterday. 🎉
This guy never disappoints. Extremely helpful and interesting
This helped me a lot today with the roundabouts. Your lessons are life savers for new drivers on the road ! Thanks so much😊😊😊😊😊
Its will help me. Thanks for the video.
I'm struggling to keep the car straight on the road. And I feel like I am moving too much the steering wheel.
I hope the video helps.
You are the master man, I passed my driving test with judging my car’s position confidently.
That's great news, congratulations on passing!
You are the best driving teacher, I think.
Thank you. It really worked . Relax and drive you move smoothly. Have a great day. Stay safe
Right from the beginning I knew I have gotten what I was looking for, thank you sir and So Help Me God
Very helpful videos. Good instructor, keep up the good work. I got my licence today, thank you very much ❤🎉
I’ve had my permit since I was 16 and I’m 18 now just starting to drive a lot and none of my family has given me useful tips to get over driving anxiety or how to stay in the center, I’m always to far to the left or right, this helped a lot
did u end up getting your license
Thank you!

My instructor says nothing but scold....he is an ass hole.
Thank you for making these videos, I watch them all the time and help me a lot 🎉
Thanks for your help, my instructor was fed up with me because of crossing, steering my wheel and about hitting the curve
Excellent explanation about keeping inside of the lane.
Thank you!
I hope it helps you, if you want to let me know make a new comment as I rarely see replies to existing comments.
Thanks I just started learning and yes I was nervous but tomorrow I will do better than last week
Sometimes old roads might be worn from where other vehicles have driven, which can help you judge your position.
@@ConquerDriving Yes this is what I was referring to.
@@ConquerDriving that is my guidance while I am learning to drive: to see road's wear from car's tyre. Anyway your videos are so helpful! Congrats!
incredible teaching style. find myself learning the most from here than other channels.
Thank you!
Thank you and I'm happy to hear I've helped you. Yeah very true, focus on solutions!
You are so good at explaining,I'm learning something new and practical every time.i watch
Thank you ☺
You’re right if you practice on roads that’s scare you it affects your confidence it’s better to practice in places you feel more comfortable. 💯👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏👏
My instructor never taught me like this. What a shame. He only said you'll only learn it by time. Keeping the center is my biggest problem.
I've been driving for years why am I watching this haha. Thanks for the good vid.
Wish my driving instructor had taken me somewhere quiet and simple at the start. I remember having to drive on a busy central London main road at rush hour during my first lesson 😩 Have since been an incredibly anxious driver ahhaa
These are a godsend, though 😻
Literally the same and it was school time as well so children and their parents were running around and popping from every directions :(
4 lessons in and finding this the most difficult part about learning and clearance from parked cars to
Thank you so much! Looking at where you are going rather than what to avoid, thanks for this tip!
