    OMG and I thought it would be easy to upgrade the RAM.
    In comparison I had a Dell at work and it had 4 screws and took less than 5 mins to completely upgrade the RAM, including rebooting. This HP (my personal laptop) now looks like a nightmare....
    Thanks so much for the video , this will help !

      I once had a Compaq (really HP) and a Toshiba (one of the better laptops I had). They all had one or two screws to undo for most upgrades. I miss that with my HP 17-x037cl. It does not seem horribly difficult to open them but I don't think it really was necessary to make it so hard to open them. The worst thing is some people will not buy a computer like that because they are under the impression that these are permanently sealed. Taking to those ones is like talking to a wall, they seem to think they know it already that there is nothing that can be upgraded inside. The truth is that there are removable parts in these the same as any other laptop, just not as easy to get at. I avoid talking to those kind of people because they are pessimists who seem to be cursed with bad luck and always make things harder than they really are.

      This is the difference between an ENTERPRISE/BUSINESS computer, and a home computer. I'm sure your one at work was enterprise, and had Windows Pro. HPs that are enterprise level are super-easy to replace HDD/RAM too. It's just that this is a cheap home computer. I did an HDD replacement on a notebook here - it took :45, and 40 minutes of that was imaging. On the other hand, I am now doing my personal computer, and yeah... ugly.

    Good for the 17-f215dx except the optical drive removal. It stays in until the top is off. One tiny screw is unseen but accessible with the drive half way out, the other is in clear sight, I used a very small flat screwdriver..

    very useful teardown thanks
    few points to note, on my HP 17-p101na 2 screws where battery case are in tear down arent present on my model.
    the dvd drive was a real pain to extract you would think just remove the screw and pull it out but had to keep fiddling at it think it was stuck down a little with glue or something but eventually came out after pulled off the plastic front facia.
    when prizing off the keyboard with plastic spudger, there are little clips, you will hear them click when pulled out, they click back in when refitting the keyboard
    cant believe they make it so annoying just to swap out a drive

  • @JohnDoe-gm5qr

    I have a 17-x037cl and while very similar to yours it does not have those two black parts in the corners. I am not quite sure how to get that back off aside from removing the screws and prying around the sides. I am wondering how to separate it near the display. Yes, I did get all the screws even the hidden ones under the sticker (mine had two like that). I liked my Toshiba laptop better just because I could open the little panels to get to the hard drive, memory or WIFi card if I ever had to. Now they design these things to make people think they have to take them to a repair center when they want any upgrade. It is either because of greed or they think everyone is dumb and not capable of doing their own upgrades. I personally feel that it is more greed than anything. These are no different from a laptop with the convenient cut outs except they try to make it harder to get into them. I cringe at thoughts of what they might try next. I think they are being kinda silly really while suspecting we are so dumbed down we couldn't change a light bulb.

      @JohnDoe-gm5qr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have only seen one laptop that can take 2 hard drives. It is not a very common thing and that is more true with the less expensive ones. Laptops with 2 hard drives exist but the ones most people get for $300 are not likely do come with room for two. If you have an optical drive you don't use much or at least not enough to justify having it you could get a kit to install a hard drive in that bay. I have never used one of those kits and I can not tell you how well they work or fit but I have seen them on the internet. There are USB optical drives if you do decide to do this and end up reinstalling Windows someday but don't want to undo your modification to install Windows.

Cleaning it will buy some time but the fan bearings eventually go dry and it will slow it down below the rpm needed to provide sufficient air flow to cool adequately. Usually machines that are overheating are either filthy with dust or the fan is failing. The reason the heat paste is drying up and not performing well is due to heat produced by the cpu and not being sufficiently cooled by the CFHT assembly.

      I have to agree with you on this absurdly difficult access to the system components. HP has a reputation for quality that is largely myth based on uneducated opinions of end users. They work great as long as you don't ever have to service the things. I worked as a hardware support technician for 20 years and these are the worst machines to work on. They are built like automobiles, meaning engineers design them to be assembled in a factory and they have no concern about what the owner has to go through to fix them when they break down. I worked for a major corporation that did warranty service on every major brand of computer and every platform short of mainframes, and I can tell you these are the worst designed machines of all time for overly complex construction and poor access to components that fail such as HDDs and memory upgrade services.
      After this thing finally dies - or if it has another problem, it is going to electronic recycling.
