What is the Best Free CAD Software for Racecar Engineering?

- Today we are looking at OnShape, what I consider to be the best free CAD software available for designing engineering components. It offers all the features of programs like Solidworks, but is completely free of charge and can run in your browser, so no installation issues. In fact, it's actually made by the same team as Solidworks.

*UPDATE* Onshape has changed their pricing strategy quite a lot these days, and as Fusion 360 has improved its feature set, I have found myself using Fusion 360 over the last year. So that is my new recommendation!

Yeah OnShape was never better than Fusion. The drawing module on collaborative editing was - but modeling? never

The problem its the word "free".
Yes, you can use onshape for free but comes with a cost. Your design its not private if you dont purchase the professional account.
Its a marketing game. They give you a little but to get more you have to pay.
And fusion 360. Its completly free, yes. BUT only for 30 days, not commercial use.
And even the subscription, the have in the contract that they can change the price plan whenever they want. So you cant trust them to use fusion on your company.
The one that is completly free is FreeCad. Its open source, you can install it on many pcs you want, you can change the code, your design is your propriety (100%).
And its on heavily development.

Are there any that haven’t moved to the subscription model? I’m not against paying for good software I just don’t think you should have to keep paying to use it after the initial purchase unless you’re getting major updates.
Yes, Fustion360 is where its at but I always recommend FreeCAD as well. It isn't as user friendly as some CAD programs but it is parametric and packed with features. It has CAM, FEA, CFD, Sheetmetal and there are always more improvements and additions with each release. The best part is it is and always will be 100% free and Open source. Fusion360 could pull the plug on hobby licences at any moment like onshape did.

Hey man, quick question. Does double clutch shifting really reduce wear on the clutch pieces? I have done both for 3 weeks still rev matching but I see no noticeable difference in the quality in smoothness of the gear change?

Nice to se an old intuos with pen holder put to use :) I had a intuos (one) until 3 years ago when the pointer got all jittery. bought a used intuos 3. good products that last a looong time :)

Wow that looks a lot easier to use than my schools cad program when I was making a car on it I had to make every panel on the car and put it on the few squares that made up the cars shape if I fucked up I had to do the panel all over again

It would be great if you could do a tutorial on how to make a actual car in cad...I use autodesk but I'm not that skilled where i can make an exact copy of a car or know how to. A 350z would make a great demo car ;)

I need help, i have little project going on and i was wondering if there a simple program for studing aerodynamic around an obj model made on blender, if it is free its better, i dont need complicated and high details I only need some program to see how the air move around a body, thanks

It depends on what you're doing. SketchUp sucks at curves and arcs, but it's ridiculously awesome for architectural models.
Sketch up lacks a lot of curve tools. As a solid modeler it is okay and easy to pick up but it plateaus very quickly and you have to be really good, and or patient, to do something like a modern automobile. Form.Z, Pro, Jr, and Free, have curve tools and ca function like a cad program. Sketch up and Form.Z Jr are both about $700 and $500 respectively.
Moments of Inspiration (MoI) is a Nurbs program than can works much like a cad program. It is about $200.
CAD programs are usually going to be parametric, and be very keen to rely on measurements as it is expected you will be working form set parameters and measurements and not eye-balling it.
I'll look at OnShape, but FreeCad is looking very promising.
Sketchup is not a parametric solid modeler.

I’m looking for someone who can design a basic car chassis and wants to startup an electric car company. Powertrain and systems I can do in spades. Building a frame/paneling... I cant do. I can help with specifications however.
I have a doubt. Do you know if "imagine & shape" workbench is used on f1 world? or just the conventional surface workbenches for modeling. I see in some cases very complex shapes and I see that very diffficult to make in "generative shape" for examle. I´d like to know that, regards!!
they use alias, if you take a 6 month certification you make 150,000, so just of that fact, its very different and much harder. I tried using Alias, but got lost because there was way to many tools, you get 0.1 mm tolerance from the real manufactured car tho. I couldn't find any models for sale either
What kind of programs such as this can run aero simulations?
If this program is online then they have access to you work design ideas etc..?

It’s called a blend feature on a lot software. You draw 2D sketches on several planes and then can have geometry blend from one sketch to the next. He did like 6 planes offset a certain incremental distance and then sketch a cross section for each you get that gradual car look.

Today we are talking about a software that costs $1500 per person per year. But sure as any of these softwares, if you're a student most half decent schools have the software for you to use under a bulk license, student license, etc. or the company offers a free student license to hook people into their ecosystem/product.
Check out Fusion360 from Autodesk as well, basicly the same pricing :)
skaltura Fusion 360 requires installing, which is inconvenient if you don't have a laptop of your own to carry around wherever you go. Or you have to ask the institution or company to install it on their computers.
BTW, how do you find Solidworks? that's where i mostly mess around with CFD and modelling..
there is no free version of SolidWorks besides the trial or a student version which eventually you have to pay for it.

What are the specs of your laptop, and how do you like it? looking at getting a Lenovo pretty soon.
Its an i7 X1 Carbon touch from a few years back (2013 I think?) I love it, super light, super tough, super fast. It was worth 2.2k when I bought it but I only paid 1.3k as one of my friends worked at lenovo and they were clearing stock. 3 Years later and it's still going strong and very quick for most of the stuff I do.
itty looks alot like solid works plus it's parametric. I have tho check this out, being free you really have no reason not too.
Fusion 360's sculpt might be better for organic shapes and tweaking. Really fast work for surfacing.
Blender is better for sculpting and edit organic shapes. And its open source
I used this software for one of my projects after extensively using CATIA and I find it a little difficult to go through and I found some of the files not compatible. After some days, I am sure we will get a hang of it but its just about personal preference.
Where did you use CATIA?
It reminds me of Autodesk Fusion 360.
I really like F360, which is also free if you make less than $100k
If you're a student and can put up $100, NX or CATIA are generally better for stuff like car design. Both of those software packages (along with ProEngineer/Creo for cheapskates) are basically industry standard in automotive and aerospace design.

I've never used cad but I want to 3d print some sideskirts for my Camaro. Would this be fairly easy to do? I'm wondering if I can draw it up and then send it to a third party for printing
Honestly, that’s not a easy project for a beginner. Also, good luck finding a printer that large, better off with a cnc router

How about a free/inexpensive fluid analysis software for aero?
OpenFOAM is the only way to go when it comes to free CFD. All other ones that I've tried are junk, but OpenFOAM is research grade. Only problem is, it is text based, so you better start learning to code!

i want to design a bicycle (actually tricycle for safety) with minimal components , and i am fried of searching. Rattlecad seems to be good but no simulation. can you help me in deciding about the proper design program. In India cost is also a factor which people take in mind. I have read much about bicycle dynamics now i want to do some designing.

Autodesk has Flow Design, which is a wind tunnel simulator
Simply drawing any "wing" shape around a straight line a d then bending it along an arc will get you about 80+% to the lift/drag of a "perfectec" airfoil. However a ha d drawn airfoil is unlikely to be amenable to analysis. As they are teaching analysis in the FSAE projects they will use quantifiable airfoils. As a prototype designer you do not have to.
Just sketch the airfoil, cut the end templates, fasten them to a block of foam, hotwire a shape and cover with fiberglass. Then you have a wing. Holding it to a car is an exercise for the builder. Have fun!
Air shaper is very limited unless you want to pay, but it gives you a short look

I think Autodesk Fusion 360 is better than OnShape. It even comes with a built in FEM stress/strain analisys tool. Unfortunately it doesn't yet have a special workflow for sheet metal, so if you're trying to design an alu monocoque Fusion isn't the best software.
SolidWorks is at the top of the hierarchy, but I am expert in it. I really love Fusion360 and it can even be run on a Chromebook and is very SolidWorks-like so hardly any learning curve and is a serious contender against SW. SW has issues like backwards compatibility designed in by GREEDY DSS, and has added CAMWorks (which is nice). OnShape is third on my list with a bit of a greater learning curve than F360, but is definitely a contender. Whatever your choice, start to learn the basics of 3-D modeling (sketch-extrude/planes/fillets/coordinate system) and you will be WAY ahead of the game. All modern technologies are based off coordinate systems: CNC, 3D printing, etc., and allow you to model real world objects digitally.

Pretty much, the button paths are a little different, but it works on essentially the same functionality.

no way, if you are a student you can get FREE Autodesk Inventor , Autocad mechanical and other CAE softwares like Autodesk CFD for 3 years. Those are by far superior to Onshape

It can be all you say, but the drawings are not yours to keep, also if the internet goes down, so goes what you did if you didn't save, the lag while drawing is terrible. I have broadband but is never that stable, the same goes for everything else with everyone.
I will stick to FreeCAD for the meantime while I perfect my skills, they either solid works or another solution that I have control of.

maaz Don't get the professional account. If you plan to just use it for hobby or if you don't care that anyone can see and copy what you make, the free version will work well for you. That said, you can only make 10 private documents up to 100MB.

Free of charge is not really true. Fusion 360 is fully free when you apply for a hobby license and you have build in rendering, cad cam, sim and more modules and that for mac and win.
plus for modeling tools fusion offers more than onchape too.
