    The rifle chosen is absolutely correct as far as our requirements are concerned, which are for a "mass produced" rifle. We can at any time upgrade a small percentage of these rifles with UBGLs, additional picatinny rails, scopes, adjustable butts or any other add-on. 🙏

    It's a shame on us that we cannot manufacture a world class rifle, handgun, machine gun or sniper rifle

    • @rohan1748
      @rohan1748 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Most of the countries that developed these have either been in wars or cold wars. They have been making guns for decades now. A robust defence manufacturing industry is usually born out of necessity.
      Our current scenario with China and pakistan on our borders and an active government have finally given us the much needed push to create a robust indigenous defence industry.

    • @OtisAdonisChad
      @OtisAdonisChad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Firstly the design is extraordinarily brilliant. Secondly even if we want to make original designs like Kalashnikovs the chances of success are less and manufacturing secrets or processes are not easily shared. But our industry people know a lot of these secrets but cannot replicate without robust government help.
      The reforms of ordnance factory board will help industry to partner and in next few decades we can expect exceptional rifles or totally Indian origin from design to manufacturing.
      We are primarily limited by lack of an ecosystem and boost in defence but that is going to change forever now.

      It's not really about the budget. It doesn't cost an arm and leg to get all the features given the kind of Defence Budget that's allocated to Army. So the talk is that Army will specially equip the bare bones rifles it gets according to the need in demand. If it's for patrolling borders, there will be one package and for Anti Terrorist operations, another. The question remains is how fast will they be equipped with these packages after the rifles are delivered.

    When the Indian Army was spending money, it should have taken an upgraded rifle because the assault rifle does not change every day, it would have been more correct to make a one time investment, now the Russian army included ak 15, 17 and ak 19 in its infantry. By the way, India should work on its own rifles, which we can export to other countries and would have been totally made in India.

    Folding butstocks are generally used more in cqb envirements, which doesnt necesseraly mean urban combat, but also shooting from armed personal carriers, or other vehicles, were a long rifle without a folding buttstock would generally be cumbersome.
    As for the decission to purchase the ak 203 and massproduce, i think its the perfectly right choice. All the tooling is already readily available, india probably still has a surpluss of 7.62x39, also a modern infrantry grunt isnt as usefull in combat as they used to be. The game is now in vehicles, missiles, drones, anti air, Helicopters etc, something india is also working much more closely together with Russia. Most indian infantry man will do is either patrolling, peacekeeping or maybe have to occasianaly defend themself , everything other will be done either by special forces or dedicated military units.
    So what you as an Army General essentially want is a ifle reliable even in extreme conditions, cheap for mass adaption and standartisation, capable of upgrading to optics to close the engagment distance in their favour and easy maintainability.
    Perfect fit i would say.

    It depends on what you want from a bullet the 5.56×45mm NATO has a flatter trajectory so it is more accurate further out downrange in an open treeless environment. The 7.62 x 39mm has a curving trajectory past 300 - 400 yards. But the 7.62 x 39mm can punch a larger bullet through dense brush, where the 5.56x 45 NATO would deflect off a small branch. Also the Americans learned in Iraq / Afghan that while manning a checkpoint it was better to have the larger round . Because the 7.62 x 39mm can damage an oncomming truck or suicide car by aiming the rounds into the engine block itself. Aim for the radiator grill. The 5.56 x 45 NATO is only good against personnel, its not good against equipment.

    • @TakNuke
      @TakNuke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's why they adopted mk318 initially quickly to increase performance followed by further improved performance in the form of heavier 77 grain mk262 and faster 62 grain m855a1. They have lot more kinetic energy, range, consistent effects on target and improved barrier penetration from a short barrel rifle. Former is preferred by socom while latter is used usarmy and now by USMC replacing their mk318. If you are manning checkpoint it's good to have m249 if one bullet can't stop vbied then a 100 rounds of normal 62 grain m855 can. Beside that it's cheaper to develop new round whose technology can be applied to improve other in service cartridges or adopt new cartridge with improved design. Then to adopt new firearm. The initial 55 grain 5.56 bullets effectiveness against soft tissue in Vietnam was so horrendous that a less fragmenting 55 grain bullet was issued still having adequate effectiveness against soft tissue. But Nato adopted belgian ss109 62 grain 5.56 bullet design with improved barrier penetration its perform adequately from a 20 inch against soft tissue causing damage through tumbling but when fired from shorter barrel the tumbling consistency dropped as 5.56 62 grain ss109/m855 was unable to reach required speed to tumble creating only holes through enemies.

    Each AK 203 is costing around 80k. Trichy Assault Rifle having almost same shooting characteristics, muzzle design, milled receiver, pic rails would cost us 55k per piece. Firing 7.62x39, gun is prone to low accuracy beyond 300mtrs due to drag, wind drift, etc. Bullet is heavier with lesser speed compared to 556 leading to this phenomenon also. Barrel metallurgy on AK 203 and TAR is also almost same as OFB has been producing Ghatak since many years(covered in the quality improvements).
    All in all, this was rather a political move than a strategic one. UP elections played a major role you could say...
    My preference would be to keep 5.56x45 and get Sig 516(716 costed 75k per piece so 516 would cost less). This would standardize weapon config across forces.

    1. AK-203 shown in Defense expo
    2. AK-203 shown by MOD
    3. Original AK-203 from Russia

    I’ve read that continuous firing of rounds will erode the gun barrel quickly from the heat and powder residues. For some top quality sniper weapons gun barrels last only about 1000 rounds. In any case continuous firing will erode the barrel very quickly. Western nations have mastered the technology of barrel making and use just enough powder for greater effect with least damage to the barrel. More powder in the cartridge does not necessarily mean that it is a better one. Does such expertise in gun barrel making and fine tuning the cartridge exist in India?

    • @IndianDefenseAnalysis

      Barrel is the lifeline of gun and needs expertise of metallurgy to achieve the top notch quality. This is however not a very high tech thing and erstwhile OFB has enough experience, they only need to focus on quality of production.

      @@IndianDefenseAnalysis you may have seen the video “Gun Busters: RPK” on TH-cam. The weapon tester shows how firing 1260 rounds of 7.62 mm bullets continuously totally ruined the rifle. In real battle situations also soldiers will have to wait from time to time for barrel to cool and also do the cleaning on the run.
