When I worked at a Ford dealership, we used to sell cars to Mennonites in north Mississippi. They would have us remove the radios from the cars and antennas from the cars we sold them. Then there was the one who had us remove the antenna but add an extra long antenna cable that sat in the floor so he could listen to the radio while his neighbors were unaware.

Typical of all of them at the time. My dad's friend worked at a Ford assembly plant in IL and the people that were in charge of putting various stickers as well as 'inspection reports' at the end of the line, actually had to work faster according to him. He said they sped the line up towards the end and as long as the proper sticker got put on in 'the general vicinity' it was marked OK on the sheet.

My father's first patrol car was a 1965 Ford Custom 500--refrigerator white, blue vinyl interior with a column-shifted 3-speed manual. Throughout his career an endless convoy of full-sized four-door American V8 sedans--white with blue or brown full vinyl interiors and expanded metal backseat cages--were parked in front of the house. I remember Fords, Plymouths, AMC Matadors, and Chevrolets, and in the waning days of his years on the beat Dodge St. Regis and Chysler Newports. My favorite was the 1968 Plymouth Fury I with the 383 Commando V8 badge on the front fenders; seemed very GI Joe to me as a 6 year old.. He was especially fond of the Plymouths, and it wasn't until I went away to college and returned home that I realized all our family cars growing up were all plain Jane, bare bones, refrigerator white Plymouth four-door V8s--vinyl seats, crank windows and all..

Hi from Ontario. My Dad had a 66 custom 500. Bought in 69 to replace the 63 Falcon he bought in 66 when we came to Canada from UK.. Same 'Fridge White' (great description); where it wasn't rust-brown. 351 Windsor with Auto but no PS, PB,PW etc. Ours was red interior. The roof rusted out just above the windshield and at 55/60 mph the headliner would inflate and bulge down into the back seat. Finally got rid of it in 75 when the gas tank developed general porosity. Replaced with 73 Custom 500 ex- police pursuit car. Dark blue and had PS, PB. Also 351 Windsor. That was the car I learned to drive on. Rusted out by 78.

He was a big shot selling Fords car parts so they made sure he got a nice car so when he's picking up customers for lunch they had a nice ride in one of their own cars - didn't want to show up picking up Ford execs in a GM you know? lol!
But that LTD had every option - think it had the Police package too. And every time he got a new car they'd give him a ringer - like put aftermarket shocks, better exhaust, better brakes. Wanted to leave an impression. If it got any rattles or squeaks it got fixed right away. The car he got after that was a Fairmont and he hated that thing - was a pile of crap compared to that LTD but they wanted to use the new Fox platform.

      @adamtrombino106 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@compu85 A lot of lower end cars still had rubber floor mats ( no carpeting) and some didn't have arm rests on the doors with std interiors. The most bare bones car I've ever owned was a 62 Dodge dart sedan. It had a heater and single speaker AM radio as its only options. It didn't even have reverse lights or a cigar lighter! The back bench seat wasn't foam padded, so you got a paper thin woven cloth piece over the springs underneath the vinyl. A full foam rear seat was optional! That car also didn't have rear door courtesy light switches, meaning someone had to open a front door for the dome light to come on. If you wanted rear door switches, you had to order the higher trim models. So, 225 slant six, non syncro column mounted 3 speed, manual brakes and steering, skinny 14 inch tires, basic chrome and stainless trim, dog dish hub caps...It did at least have 2 sun visors, which was an option on fleet cars!

I loved driving both in spring thru autumn with the windows down. Gosh, the memories of the 'good old days'. Big V8 engines and 2bbl carbs that got relatively good mpg for the weight and size of the vehicle. My Olds would do 120+ mph . . . Buried the needle a time or three and I did get a few tickets do to my lead stilettos. Even had my license put on probation twice for excessive tickets., but managed to be a good girl long enough for the points to go down and never lose my driving privilege.

What an awesome collection of ordinary cars from the past. You said you should drive them more often but are too busy. I’d be more than glad to take them out and exercise them. I actually prefer driving cars from this era than the garbage being sold today. You should make a video listing all the cars you own. You could probably make some money renting them out to Hollywood film makers since a lot of movies seem to take place in the time period of most of the cars you feature. Take care of these cars because even though there used to be thousands of them on the road every day in their time, most of them are gone. Everyone saved GTOs, Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs etc but almost on one would save the cars you feature. I really enjoy seeing them.

I got an interesting story. My grandpa has a 1964 lincoln continental convertible. He has a story of one day he returned home just to quickly grab something left the car running in the driveway with the driver door open. Less than a minute later he came out and the car was gone. The driveway was directly across from a irrigation cannal. Well the car had popped out of park and rolled backwards a good 80 yards through a fence, bent the driver door backwards and was sitting in the cannal. Luckily it was dry during that time, he was able to hop in and drive it out. This was in the early 2000s, he had everything from that incident fixed and the car still runs today. But it's about time for another refresh. The windows have electrical issues, the engine has a valve sticking and the radio doesn't work. But the original power top still works, along with the original air conditioning, blows cold. I would love to buy it from him someday, I think that car is the one of the most sophisticated American cars ever made, a true American icon. I love that hardtop Galaxie!

When I was a kid, we got a 73 Ford Ranch Wagon. It had a lame 351W, intermitant wipers, automatic brake release, and remote mirrors. That was as fancy as it got. It did have a power tailgate window, but I seem to think that was standard equipment on the wagon.
My dad was a master at packing the roof rack. There were 5 kids in our family. I always got the "pleasure" of riding in the back. No. There weren't seats in the back, but rather a small trunk.
Dad would never upgrade to radial tires. By 1980 I was learning how to drive. It took a lot of effort to keep that barge on the road.
The gas mileage was horrible. 6 in town and 12 on a trip. It was gutless. But there are a lot of memories of that old tank.

Us too...though I'm probably a bit older (got my driver's license in 1974), my Dad bought a new '73 Ranch Wagon the year before, with the same 400 cid /2 bbl engine (he knew I liked cars so he took me around with him shopping for cars...he'd spend 1 day at most shopping for a car but still went to several dealers.) It replaced our '69 Country Squire with the 351 /2bbl, but despite being a lower trim level, the Ranch Wagon had quite a few more options than our Squire had, many first time in our family, though by today's standards you might laugh since what was optional then is pretty much standard now. It was our first air conditioned car (with manual air conditioning, no automatic climate control) , with AM/FM stereo (another first) power locks (ditto) but manual windows, and the trailer towing package (we had just bought a pop top camper weeks before he bought the Ranch Wagon and it was probably overkill but it was on the car. Also had Firestone 500 radials which were very short lived, they delaminated (fortunately found up on the rack not while driving) when the car was still only a few months old. It was the 6 passenger model; Dad preferred not having the 2 extra seats to just having underfloor storage; one of my jobs was to pack what he called "the well" effectively so there was extra room up top in the wagon area for my younger sisters to sleep or play.
Of course it didn't get very good gas mileage, after the gas crisis Dad tried to get Mom to drive his other (smaller) car when he wasn't working, if she went shopping....he even traded his other car ironically for one that got worse fuel mileage so it had an automatic too...my Mom learned to drive on a semiautomatic Chrysler, but really wasn't happy with anything other than a full automatic. I mostly drove his car too after getting my learner's permit but after I got my license (will be 50 years next month) I would also drive the Ranch Wagon, mostly to spell him on trips....Mom was the usual driver but Dad and I would take over for longer trips which we made several of.
The thing I remember most about it was the very loud turn signal relay clicking; maybe it was due to having the trailer towing package but you could easily hear when they were on, a good feature to avoid leaving them on if they didn't self cancel. The power locks were also loud, I think they were vacuum operated but also were loud in operation. It was a large car by today's standards (though back then considered standard sized) and could be a handful to park.
I'm now wishing I could buy a car like this in my old age, a smooth riding car would be nice (also easy to get in and out of)....where does Adam locate these low mileage cars especially considering how old they are now?

I worked in a Ford Mercury Lincoln dealership all through high school late 70’s / early 80’s. We had a lot of Mennonite customers including a few that would buy a loaded LTD and have the whitewalls turned inward, wheel covers replaced with smaller hubcaps, vinyl roof and radio removed. Modest on the outside, full luxury inside.

A little suggestion Adam. Avoid pumping the gas pedal straight up when starting a car that’s been sitting for any length of time. Best to crank the engine for a while and then let it sit for a minute to allow fuel to make its way to the accelerator pump. Helps to avoid ripping a dried out accelerator pump diaphragm. Love your videos.

When I was cutting my teeth in the automotive service world in the early 90s working for a gas station, we had a little old lady that had to be in her 90s at that time that would come in for fuel. She owned a 73 and a 78, both in triple yellow. He husband was a Ford salesman and she said he would have these cars throughout the 70s as take home demos. When they got enough miles on them, he had the option to buy them at a steep discount, so he bought the 73, and his last was the 78. He passed that year. She wouldn't sell either of them. As for her 73, I recall it had an emissions sticker on the valve cover that did indeed say 351M/400 on it. The VIN said it was a 400, as did the pie plate.
