- Gorilla Lope has grown a lot since we last visited and has started to take on the
characteristics of a mature male gorilla. Lope has been into his own enclosure
to avoid tension growing between himself and his father; dominant male Oumbi
He is scheduled to be moved to another zoo as part of the European breeding program.
#Gorilla Family, the other members of his Gorilla Troop are:
Dad Silverback - Oumbi
Mum - Ozala
Grandmother - Biddy
Aunt - Asante
Brother - Shufai
Recorded 26th February 2021 at Twycross Zoo
Twycross Zoo is the only Zoo in the UK where you can see The 4 Great Apes Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Bonobos and Orangutans

It's sad when a member of the troop has to leave, but it is for the good a young male who is becoming a silverback. He'll be okay and will someday be a daddy himself.
Yeah I think he will be fine wherever he goes, he's a confident Gorilla. Thanks so much for watching. 🥰
You right our dear Lope 🦍💙
Lope is an amazing young gorilla. Lope is personality plus .🤩🦍
He has always had a sense of humour and has been a big presence in the Gorilla enclosure at Twycross, I'm sure he will do great when he moves on to another zoo. Thanks as always for watching Pamela. 🥰
O my goodness! He’s so beautiful! He has his dad’s eyes but balanced in some of mama’s features! Still has that naughty glint tho! Those bachelors better get ready!😂
Yeah I think he is going to be an awesome alpha male wherever he goes. He has matured and grown a lot since I last saw him. Thanks so much for watching, we really appreciate it. 👍
My beautiful lope so sad 😢😢
@@flaviablanco8245 He will be fine! He’s transitioning to go on with his life. There is a bachelor in the states who went to his troop of 4 females! Lope is a wonderful gorilla! He will have his own troop😊
@@MySkinnydip thank you 👍🏻
Love you Lope. Gosh he’s a beauty. His brother Okanda a couple of years older in a German zoo is a really gorgeous looking blackback too. I hope we get to see him often wherever he goes. Everyone will miss seeing Lope on the regular otherwise he is personality plus. 🦍♥️
Lope is growing into a handsome and magnificent silverback.
He really is, he has grown so much since our last visit. Hope he enjoys his new home.
He was such a mischievous but adorable little boy 😁
He's a character thats for sure 🥰🦍
I've been to see him today. I can't wait for him to join his new bachelor group. It's sad seeing him alone. I think Shufai must miss their play fights too.
Love you Lope
He is certainly is a character and has really matured quickly over the last year. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed. 🥰
Lope, I miss you so much😢😢😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, know what you mean. We have some old footage of him that we will be putting up and hopefully will be able to visit him someday. 🥰
Been to see him today, and much as I will miss him, I will be happy for him to move in with other young male gorillas. It's sad to see him alone.
Yes he will really be missed when he leaves Twycross but I'm
sure he will do well wherever he goes. Thanks again for watching. 🥰
You're lucky to have the opportunity to go and see him. ;)
I wish I had the opportunity to go see this troop I love Lope and Shufai 🦍
Very impressive looking fellow
He's all grown up 😮🤠🙏👍🇬🇧
I hope he is happy. I still say Lope, Kiyamosa, and Gentaro would have made a great temporary bachelor's group.
I hope Lope doesn't have to stay by himself too long. I don't know how old he is but a girlfriend would be nice for him. 💖💖💖😍
He will be 11 on Jan 3rd, 2024
@@charlesmccoy5857 thank you! He's probably old enough for a girlfriend then. 😊
He’s grown into quite a handsome fella. It just makes me sad to see him all alone. He looks restless and bored. I hope they find a place where he can be with at least one other gorilla soon. I’m wondering why they couldn’t have put his brother with him at least temporarily. I’m assuming he won’t be able to stay with his family either in a few years so I wonder why that wasn’t an option. Thanks so much for the update!
Shufai is castrated so he won't become a proper silverback the same way Lope will be. He may be able to stay with his family for this reason. The castration program was only introduced after Lope was born because of not enough space in zoos to transfer silverbacks to have their own troop.
Ohhhhh….castrated sounds rough. I hope that was really necessary.
In my opinion he doesn't look restless but very attentive.
He will join bachelors group in zoo in France at the end of the year Unfortunately we will not see him again I was hoping to see him with Shufai again 🥲💔
Thanks for watching Magenta, in the wild a young mature Gorilla will leave it's family as tensions and rivalry builds between silverbacks and they will often spend time alone before beginning a family of their own. It would possibly be detrimental to Shufai to be separated for a time and then returned to his family. The Zoo has a lot of things to consider. Thanks so much for watching. 👍
Lope lost his Baby-Face and is now beginning to be a handsome Silverback. To see him now you would think, WOW! Watch out! He looks intense! But, we know Lope has a big heart and a clown. I hope he always keeps his playful and funny personality. What a beautiful Boy he is. I really see Dad in his eyes and brow. He is going to be huge. Look out ladies!!
He has grown and matured so much since we last visited him. Thanks so much for watching and for the great comment. 🥰
@@ApeTracker1 , Yes, he is such a big boy now. So handsome but I still see the sweetness in his eyes. I wish him the very best in his new Bachelor Pad and hope he makes friends with the other Young Silverbacks.
Maybe he can teach them how to shake their butt while walking Bipedal, we all love his "Stud-Strut" & "Bouncy Butt Bipedal walk". And we know he is the Champ of throwing himself down or rather nose diving down hills! LOL! Wish him the very best!! Thank you for the kind reply and wonderful videos!! Take care and be safe. 😘
Its something else watching these gorillas turn silver because its like a switch turns their emotions quickly into alpha mode.
Lope has grown so much since our last visit, thanks for watching. 😍
Lope is a handsome fellow❣️ I daresay he’s wondering what’s going on and why he’s been moved, but he’ll have all the excitement and social interaction he can handle once he’s moved in with a bachelor troupe! I’m glad he’s been chosen as a future silverback, but dealing with the males who are not chosen to father offspring is a real dilemma for zoos. 😢 Each silverback needs at least two females to form a troupe, so if captive gorilla births are roughly 50% male and 50% female, at least half the boys are going to miss out. I’ve read that its not possible to reintroduce captive-born gorillas into the wild - I believe the Aspinall Foundation has done it, but I assume that the cost and logistics involved mean that it can’t be achieved on the scale required to help all the non-breeding zoo males. 😢😢😢 In many ways, the international breeding program for Western Lowland Gorillas has been ‘too successful’ and the poor chaps who end up castrated or living permanently in bachelor troupes are victims of that success. A further problem is that bachelor troupes don’t attract zoo visitors, who typically want to see families - preferably with babies. I believe some zoos have considered euthanization, so I guess castration is the lesser of the two evils. I often watch videos of our current favourite baby gorilla boys - such as Kiango, Gentaro, Kintaro, Jabali, Ringo and Kayembe - and wonder how many of them will have the chance to become papas. 🥺🥺 I think future generations will look back on this issue and criticise us for handling it very, very badly. 😢😢😢 I really wish I knew the answer - or preferably that I knew a posse of gorilla-loving billionaires who would pay for a large-scale gorilla reintroduction program. 🙏❤️
It is a tough one to call, probably with no correct answer. I believe that zoo's are working hard to do what is best for the species in a very imperfect world. I hope that in the future animals from the breeding program will be released into managed reserves. Thanks so much for watching and for the wonderful comment. 🥰
@@ApeTracker1 - Thanks so much for the response. 🙏 I’ll just add that I didn’t intend any criticism of zoos or the wonderful staff who dedicate themselves to helping our beautiful cousins! Managed reserves would definitely be a great solution - we’ll just have to keep hoping and supporting that work in any way we can. You guys are doing a brilliant job by getting footage and stories about the great apes in Britain’s zoos out there in the public eye. Keep up the wonderful work❣️
Keep in mind, that math (males having troops with multiple females) works just the same way in the wild. Not all wild gorilla males get to father offspring. It's the way nature works, only the strongest and fittest get to pass on their genes. Keeping some male gorillas in a bachelor troop for their entire lives would mimic the way some of them live their lives when not captive. Unfortunately, some zoos don't take the responsibility of stewardship that we incur by keeping these wonderful cousins of our seriously, so they're not always placed in the "right" situations. Also, I do respect what the Aspinall Foundation does, but with appropriate habitat becoming increasingly difficult to find, I'm not sure rewilding is the answer either.
Lope has morphed into a silverback overnight, my hope is Twycross will send him to a place with a couple of females so he can begin his life with his own troop. I invite everyone to Google baby Lope at Twycross as a newborn in March 2013 great photos and early videos,. Fascinating to see how he has grown through the years to become this magnificent gorilla we see now! Thx AT for this really great video, you and SV have given us a deeper appreciation for the hard work you do documenting these beautiful creatures giving a connection I, we would never have! 😎
He is still a little young. I'm not sure why they didn't leave him with his family a little longer. He is starting to turn silver and his head is getting bigger, but other than that he is still pretty small for a silverback. A mature female would probably try to take advantage of his size. Even though he is still very strong.
@@bigboytoyz541 you should take a look at Lope's brothers Matadi and Okanda, they were running and hiding from the females, now both are fathers to a couple of kids apiece. I suspect they'll have to pin Lope down,! LOL BTW, I give Lope 6 Mos and he'll be huge cause he's eating more food and not having to share.
@@swamp5050 oh definitely. Giving him a little time and he will be huge. I used to watch them back about 4 or 5 years ago. They all grew up quick.
Thanks so much for watching and giving us some great insight into Lope. We always recommend people check out SloggerVloggers channel it is simple full of awesome footage especially of Lope and his family. I'm sure Lope will have amazing success as an alpha silverback with his own troop. 🥰
Getting up close to him he is getting really big, but yes I think he would benefit from a little longer in his own enclosure but I think it was getting difficult between Oumbi and himself. Thanks so much for watching. 🥰
Wow, Lope has gotten very handsome, he was always cute but WOW ❤❤❤❤
Our 💙 Lope will be ok. I am glad to see him outside, and on the enclosure grounds foraging, which means he's adjusting. He's starting his new life, and is becoming one very handsome 🦍 silverback 😘.
Thank you!
Wow! His he is getting sooo big! He is going to be an AMAZING Silverback!
My forever love Lope be good my dear 🦍💙👍🏻🙏 welcome France 🇫🇷🥰😢🙋🏻♀️ I going to miss you 😢🥰

Lope is so handsome wish him well🥰🥰🥰🥰
He is growing so much, I'm sure he will do amazing at his next zoo. Thanks so much for watching. 👍
He misses his family. He is all alone.Gorillas are social creatures. I wish you'd bring his brother into this space. This was the wrong move for Lope.
Amazing how strong they are 😊
Yes, when you get up close to them you realise just how big they are. 👍
@@ApeTracker1 so much like humans
Poor lope, he Miss his family
Yes, hopefully he is settling into his new home and enjoying life. 🦍
My beloved Rascal.dont know why but I just started to cry. 😔Wonder if he is feeling grief from the loss of his family and from being alone all of a sudden.prayers for you,my dear gorilla who started this all.💙🦍💙😔😔😔😔
The original rascal! I wonder if he misses his Biddy? He will be a playful, loving mate when the time comes! 🫶🏽
Gentaro in the City of Kyoto, Japan is reaching his adulthood too, in size anyway. I observe video someone uploads everyday and I've not noticed his father playing with him in a long time. Gentaro acts out once in awhile towards his mother but never hurts her. Both her sons protect her when dad gets rough at her. Dad is clearly not content in his crappy caged zoo life. I certainly can't blame him. It's easy to see the dullness even in the eyes of the young ones. In the wild they'd have nearly unlimited exploring and have several playmates their age and some a bit older and eventually younger.
The urge to mate is in nearly all living creatures but IMO it's inhumane to be born and spend entire life in a zoo/cage. The only thing worse would be life as a "science" project.
Every zoo should have to retire animals to a real sanctuary and if they are to have any animal they should have to provide it an existence similiar enough to the wild that they could be released and survive. Leave zoos to injured animals or too old to keep up with their kind.
In the wild your young adult male would leave the tribe and join his older bachelor brothers until finding a female from another family for himself. And in his brother group or with his new wife and kids, he'd keep tabs on where they all are located, approximately.
Zoos do to animals like slave traders did to families. It's been proven animals of higher intellect remember their siblings. They don't mate with their parents or children.
Gentaro, I discovered, has at least one zoo looking to him for a young female. I am going to watch here awhile to observe your young male's situation.
Best wishes. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching, we really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed the video. 🥰
Gorilla bachelor group is like saying steroid infused cage match. He will be in a lot of scraps
Is Lope still at Twycross Zoo? If so they should place Shufi with him so they have play mates
That's Lope?!
He really has grown and is still a real character. Thanks so much for watching.
@@ApeTracker1 Thank you for responding, how old is Lope now? I 1st saw him and his family shortly after his brother was born and his mother screamed and chased him out of the room she and her newborn were in.
He looks menacing
Any time frame for his move with the bachelors ?
I am excited for Lope to becomevhis own silverback and start his own family. Curious to know to where he moves.
Same here
Why do they hold him in solitary confinement? Is he contagious or something? Any info anyone?
He is moving to a zoo in France, so has to be in quarantine before he leaves. Thanks so much for watching. 👍
Please, how old is Lope?
Lope was 10years old in January. Many thanks for watching. 🥰
What is the name of the zoo he is in
To: @user-ee3vm1zt2o - Lope was in a quarantined area of Twycross Zoo, UK, pending his transferral to Zoo du Basin d'Arcachon, France.
At the time of this comment Lope is now in France and has joined a bachelor group.
