Clothes we wear

  • Went back to the waterfall with Sepi, to see it from above.
At 0.29 I go through the layers of clothing we wear. All natural fibres. Hemp, cotton, possum and merino wool, silk, melton weave wool, waxed canvas, sheepskin. All in a comprehensive layering of clothing. This is all I wear now. The bag is small, comfort high, in all weather, hot and cold.

On the website news article, "A Waterfall in Victoria", I explain the function of these layers in more extreme conditions of the wet and cold.
In future videos and news articles, I will go deeper into this topic of clothing, looking into the dermal and epidermal layers of our skin and finding out how our bodies sense atmosphere, environments, and the fabrics we wear. It's truly fascinating to learn about our body's sensing and constant adjustment to the conditions, and how our clothing enhances or inhibits that sensing.

I LOVE all this. The practical layering and ideas behind everything, but also the beauty of it, it just looks so nice! I dont know how the world could ever bring low rise trousers into fashion. I have been selling all my jeans and going for really high rise ones, and that is what I will stick with from now on. So much better!

@@kingsgambit in the town I live in, where I recently moved, lives an elderly man I befriended, who used to work as a production manager in clothing manufacturing, before our government pulled the rug out from under the industry. He was working in the industry when work jeans were appropriated by the fashion world. Lee jeans specifically. He said the owners asked how they could sell into the fashion world, and they were told to lower the waist so the models could show mid drift. The production managers saw a 14% saving in material, so they said yes. The marketing mantra for everything back then (and today if I'm honest) was, sex sells, and the rest is history.
We don't train clothing designers who understand function over form, we train fashion designers. Now we've almost forgotten what high rise is. Builders have to look at each other's buttcracks and manage tool belts digging in. Even the military have no idea about high rise any more. And don't get me started on bowyangs...
What jeans have you found that are high rise? In Australia we have Wangler, but even they are pretty modest in the rise...

@@Peakoilcompany that is so interesting, what a valuable insight! It's so weird seeing people trying to fasten their pants ON the hip ... like come on, there is a natural edge just slightly above, and it will sit tight on its own :D 3 of the 4 pants I have are not specifically sold as high-rise, but I found I can still wear them quite high, the 4th is a Wrangler 13 MWZ (I agree, could be higher for my taste). It's true, they aren't easy to find.

A wonderful paean to the land and one's self in the land. We were the land's before the land was ours. Indeed the land is never ours, though we are of it. The hydraulics of such a landscape invite a certain kind of pelt for humans. Though I feel for the animals that make such borrowed pelts possible (a possum gave me a skeptical glance the other day) anything less is apparently nowadays the plastics industry and its poisons. I've only recently understood that the ultralight clothing industry needs its strongest poisons for water shedding. Imagine shedding water thus into a watershed! We are mostly water and when we climb hard we create clouds. Though I am a poor man I will not always be so, and for now I dream of such clothing. Instead of starting with an adventure and then searching for the clothing, my plan is to start with such clothes and then seek an adventure.

@@DrDavidThor beautifully put! I really enjoyed your way of writing.
Regarding how you start, and regarding shell layers, I would recommend waxing military clothes. You don't really need all the pockets they have, which only make waxing more difficult anyway, so finding military clothing (combat fatigues) with less pockets narrows the search a bit. High rise pants, and baggy ones typically found in paratrooper designs are best too. You could, if you like, put a zipper in the side seams of both the pants and the jacket, for ventilation benefits.
If you are likely to be out in torrential rain, you might consider a waxed canvas poncho as well, secured around your waist with a belt. As for the other layers, thrift shopping will do, just go for the wool and cotton knits. Stay well away from any synthetics. Polyester in particular, attracts and holds micrococi, a smelly bacteria that normally rots us down when we're dead. If that isn't a sign, I dunno what is!
You can find videos about waxing here in this channel.. and plenty of others too. One tip though, go for tightly woven canvas, not denim or jersey weaves designed to give flexibility in the weave. Think high quality bedsheets even. They hold the wax treatment better.

@@DrDavidThor ahahahaaa. Light weight is for light weights! But yeah, seriously, all that technology hasn't done us many favours. By my estimation, one of my anoraks will out last 10 light weight plastics, meaning it all balances out in the end. But only one leaves a nasty residue of plastic and chemicals.
