Crampons / micro-spikes are much cheaper than snowshoes and work on winter trails when there's just ice or compact snow (rather than fresh powder). Easy to strap on your boots or carry in your bag. Worth looking into!
Being raised in Florida and then moving to NY in my 20s, I never knew how to layer. I moved up north with a sweatshirt being my warmest clothing. I learned quickly that I was not made for the cold, but still here 18 years later. Taking my first cold weather backpacking trip Halloween weekend and finally bought myself some wool base layers for the trip. This is an informative and fun video as usual Miranda. Thanks!

From South Florida? Central Florida and up, we have plenty of days where it's 30 degrees in the morning and then 80 by 2pm, plus the humidity that makes the cold colder and the hot, hotter. I've camped many times in January where I woke up and the water bucket was frozen and I was sweating that afternoon.
A kayaker turned me on to SealSkinz gloves for winter. I bought a pair one size too large and layer them on top of my regular gloves to stay even warmer when my hands are stuck out in the open on hiking poles. As for socks, I've worn non-cushioned SmartWool quarter socks for years, layer them on top of knee-high liners when cold. Yep, looks pretty goofy, but I've never had a blister! lol The REI wool socks are also great, last just as long as SmartWool for me! I still need to try Darn Tough, but have had poor results with Farm to Feet.
💯 once you learn layering hiking in any condition is a breeze. Also carry micro spikes if you’ll be hiking in cold conditions and there a possibility of ice or fresh snow on the trail.
Basically, you're showing the seasonal fashion phases of Trader Joes, through all four seasons. Everything that you're wearing, you will find someone in the parking lot of any Trader Joes driving a Subaru, Rav4, 4Runner, or a Honda HR-V wearing the same thing.
Category 0: Desert! Wherein it's super hot, but weirdly you're covered from head to toe. I have always found it sorta weird that there's this "bucket curve" of skin coverage vs. temperature. Obviously when it's super cold you need all your skin covered, but also when it's Super Hot you also want all your skin covered. Besides skin cancer, the external heating from the sun/desert will actually be more than what your body is producing, so it makes sense to cover up and reflect as much of that away as possible. I guess maybe in the middle of the bucket curve (i.e. moderate temperatures) our bodies are good enough at heat management to just let them do their thing. But at the edges of the curve (super hot/super cold) our bodies can't cope, so we have to take over with technology and just cover everything. Pretty exciting though that in the near future we might start to see some high tech desert gear using passive radiative cooling paints. In other applications they can passively cool a surface exposed to direct sunlight by up to 10 degC below the ambient air temp, which seems like a pretty good fit for desert gear to me. Just thinking out loud, but I think if the inner surface was black, and the outer surface had radiative paint, then you would basically have a similar passive thermal control system as what's already used on some spacecraft to reject sunlight and dump waste heat (which is the same goal in the desert). Even better, someday we'll all get stillsuits from Dune. Then I can finally hang up my sun gloves and not have to pack/cache tons of water for desert trips.
Great advice, I took a marathon training class in Edmonton Alberta years ago..our first run was January 2nd and it was 40 below...we layered up and after 3 or 4 miles no one was cold and we ran 15 miles that day. Love your videos Miranda

After living and backpacking in southern Arizona for 40 years, I have learned that wearing cotton certainly has its advantages in certain conditions. For example: You may find yourself hiking between May and October. If you're switchbacking up steep slopes to a high ridge and your cotton shirt is soaked from sweat you learn to take advantage of every shaded and/or breezy place. Because when you stop and turn your body so that the breeze is coming from the side and lean back to let the wind flow between the pack and your back, the evaporative affect is very effective because of the generally low humidity. You can get chilled very quickly which is good because it cools the blood in the skin which is then pumped inward to help cool your core. But, I still use mostly synthetics. You are still sweating but you are kept cool by the moisture wicking away without condensing and soaking the material.
As an overall baselayer a wool/synthetic blend will outperform anything else. Thicker for cooler temps, thinner for the heat. A 50/50 blend seems to be the best of both worlds
@REI, please carry more petite sized clothing, especially base layers. It's hard to wear base layers that are way too long and wide underneath petite-sized clothes.
Agree. REI sizing is not inclusive at all. Average US women’s height is only 5’ 4”, but most of their clothes are suitable for broader shoulders and longer limbs.
Oh! Thanks to Miranda for clarifying some of the layering for me -- in an easy and informative way, too! I didn't know there was a difference between mid-layer and insulating layer, but that's why these videos exist!
Start your hike “comfortably cool” is what I was taught in my cold weather survival class in Alaska. So you don’t sweat. Also, mittens are always warmer so I always bring mittens because my hands tend to get very cold.

I got a few Smartwool cami tanks and it's totally changed cool weather comfort during hikes for me, my cotton camis have been keeping me cold and sweaty for over a decade because I couldn't give them up under long sleeves. Thanks Miranda!
I'd like to see you check out Duluth Flex dry on the fly pants and shorts. I recently bought a pair of the shorts and pants this summer and introduced them into my hiking/fishing clothes and I think they're absolutely amazing for those applications. Would like to hear your opinion on them for hiking and backpacking. *EDIT* Also would be interesting to see Miranda do an urban/traveling van camping survival video in Vincent. Cause sometimes its a long drive to get where you're going to camp/hike and an alternative to hotels/motels is always preferable to me. You and Vincent Van Gogh have inspired me too, my next big purchase will be a van and having it gutted and custom outfitted for traveling/van camping. Great question! My Patagonia Nano Puff isn't quite warm enough for the winter, but it's perfect for the rest of the year when the down layer would be too much! Since everyone warms and cools differently, two insulated jackets is likely not necessary for everyone. - Miranda

This girl is my hero. I've learn so much just from her. One biggest things I learned from her was to just pack my sleeping bag right on to my pack not put in to a compression pack.
I wish you would’ve linked those long (taupey) pants you were wearing. That’s the hardest part for me to find is lightweight pants like that that look good.
Beanies are always really tight on my head. I get compression headaches from tight head gear and wearing a beanie brings on an unbearable headache. Any beanie alternatives or not tight beanies? I’m curious if there’s solutions or other people who also get headaches with tight hats?
The better sweater beanie comes in two sizes. I’ve compared both and the smaller one is big enough for most, the size up is considerably larger and should accommodate everyone else. They rim is now doubled over so it’s easier to get on/off and feels more substantial. Great hat
I love this big-picture overview. I grew camping and hiking a little, but I'm pretty new to a more technical approach to dressing for outdoor activity. Wearing stuff that's a little more capable is an empowering feeling.
I wish people would include temp ranges when they mention “cool, colder, summer, fall” etc. Being from south Florida, everything is hot lol. I’ll go up north a few times out of the year but I never really know how to prepare.

Living in Southern California, I don't miss the rain at all. Most of my outdoor clothes are from Columbia it prevent me from sunburn . I made a silly mistake 7 years ago by hiking the Great Wall of China in March with my wool coat, snow on the ground but I was getting too warm from my hike. I didn't do any research on hiking the Great Wall before my visit
I hike in the northeast (VT, NH). I am always hesitant to wear shorts even if it’s hot outside as I worry about bugs and Lyme disease. Any good rule of thumbs I could use to decide when it is ok to wear shorts?

When choosing everything else that goes on top of your base layers, do you size up in your puffer and rain jacket to make sure everything fits comfortably underneath?
There are different types of cotton wear. My base layer used to be cotton fit for under -30 degree Celsius. And cotton wear is one of the best for tropical and desert environment.

Also gaiters! Saved me a few times stepping in a hidden creek under the snow (if not wearing tall boots)

Best advice I ever received for colder weather hiking. You should feel cold when you start. Once you start moving, you will warm up.

The best one for softness is icebreaker. Soft as cotton, really comfy. But, minus33 and smartwool are both very good.

I love this big-picture overview. I grew camping and hiking a little, but I'm pretty new to a more technical approach to dressing for outdoor activity. Wearing stuff that's a little more capable is an empowering feeling.

I wish people would include temp ranges when they mention “cool, colder, summer, fall” etc. Being from south Florida, everything is hot lol. I’ll go up north a few times out of the year but I never really know how to prepare.
I know I'm two years late to this but @rei really should do videos like this for men to... Dont get me wrong I love Miranda in the Wild but I don't think I will be hiking in leggings any time soon. :)
Living in Southern California, I don't miss the rain at all. Most of my outdoor clothes are from Columbia it prevent me from sunburn . I made a silly mistake 7 years ago by hiking the Great Wall of China in March with my wool coat, snow on the ground but I was getting too warm from my hike. I didn't do any research on hiking the Great Wall before my visit
I hike in the northeast (VT, NH). I am always hesitant to wear shorts even if it’s hot outside as I worry about bugs and Lyme disease. Any good rule of thumbs I could use to decide when it is ok to wear shorts?

When choosing everything else that goes on top of your base layers, do you size up in your puffer and rain jacket to make sure everything fits comfortably underneath?
One thing I haven't seen in these vids are winter outershells for windy winter dry weather? I just normally see rain jackets.
Do you think merino wool underwear also makes a big difference?

What pants are those? I hike where there are ticks and its hot much of the year. Looking for the perfect pair of pants.
There are different types of cotton wear. My base layer used to be cotton fit for under -30 degree Celsius. And cotton wear is one of the best for tropical and desert environment.

This was super helpful!! Could you do a video explaining why you like the articles of clothing you have in this video? I really am torn because there are so many options for layers. I just like to know why people decide on the stuff they have. I loved the video though! I am just getting into hiking more : ) I want to have good gear that lasts. Always looking for recommendations.

out of nosy curiosity- why synthetic vs down? (i'm personally allergic, and i find it's real rare to see someone else who doesn't use down, especially when they backpack)
Down loses its insulating quality when wet and takes a long time to dry. Also, down is usually more expensive than synthetic.
