Dolly Sods Wilderness | Overview and Tour

- In this video, I give you an overview and tour of the Dolly Sods Wilderness located within the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Dolly Sods Wilderness has 47 miles of backcountry trails with elevations ranging from 2,500 feet to over 4,700 feet. The subalpine climate here is often compared to climates in southern Canada. In this video, I show you the Red Creek Trailhead at the southern entrance to Dolly Sods, Dolly Sods picnic area, the Northland Loop, Red Creek Campground, Lion’s Head, Bear Rocks Preserve, and other backcountry points of interest. I have hiked, backpacked, and camped the Dolly Sods Wilderness over a dozen times in the past 15 years. I hope you enjoy this overview and tour of the Dolly Sods Wilderness. It truly is a special place to visit in my home state of West Virginia. There was no useable cellular service at the Red Creek Campground on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile but signal was available at Bear Rocks Preserve parking area.

That’s why I bought a 21’ class C 4wd. I may have to venture out there this fall. On a weekday so it will be empty 😂. We actually went there a few years ago and walked the overlook and river of rocks. 👍🏼

Awesome video Lou. I love the Sods, Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob. Been visiting those areas since the early 80's, and you are right, it never gets old. Going this coming week with my oldest son and one of my granddaughters, possibly my youngest son and another granddaughter may be joining us. Planning a lot of hiking and sightseeing.

I did my first backpacking trip to Dolly Sods with two of my police partners nearly 40 years ago, and it was an epic three-night trip. I have done many more trips since then. When my son was in high school, he, two of his friends, and my wife mountain biked from near Red Creek Campground, across the sods, down the mountain and they ended up at the lodge at Timberline Ski Resort.
I am planning a short trip to Red Creek Campground in early October.
Fall is the best time to visit Dolly Sods. The wonder sure does come alive up in the Sods with the fall colors.

I will be in a Van so the sites you showed looked like they would work out perfect. I'm from Virginia just below Ravens Roost on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is good info. Looks like the parking at Rohrbaugh trail head is pretty limited. My last WV trip was at the North Fork Mountain, that place is awesome, pretty sure I could see Dolly Sods from there. Next trip I'm thinking Seneca Creek but a return to the Sods will probably be after that. WV backpacking is A+.

Would you say this area is appropriate for tent/hammock camping?
Awesome place to car/tent camp at the Red Creek Campground or backpack/camp at least 300 feet off the forest road. There are an abundance of established campsites along the marked trails.

Wish we could get in with our Class-C, but our sway is limiting.
Everything is a trade-off in the RV world. Canaan Valley State Park and Seneca Shadows (USFS) campground are both nearby and are big rig friendly. Just saying . . . Thanks for watching! Lou
