    Hi, welcome to Alaska. I've worked in that very Costco for 26 years, and retired a few years ago. Actually transferred to that one right after it was built, when it opened in '92, from the Dimond one, so I know lots of the old schoolers there. My class mate's dads' company built that building. Anyway, I just found your channel by coincidence I guess, and it's cool to find other people interested in the same things. Your place looks like quite the dream, very cool. I love Wasilla.

    Like women in the 19th century, a homestead housewife has to prep and store and cook everything and plan her pantry for seasons in advance. Thankfully there are freezers so she doesn’t have to do canning. It’s still hard work.

    We we visited Costco yesterday here in the UK. we got from memory, sausage(18) Angus beef joint (we cut into 3) chicken wings (20) kilo onions, aluminium foil (enough for 2 years based on our last pack) Large vacuum bags, 120), 15 packs sugar, washing power VERY large, LARGE fabric softener, 12 pack washing up detergent. Floor cleaner detergent. Kilo of Cod fillets, Kilo of prawns, 4 litres of Vegetable oil, 2 litres of Olive oil, 1litre of Soy sauce. Tooth paste, hand wash, shampoo and conditioner. Plus other stuff I can’t remember. The bill was £260, UK sterling, worth every penny. This was just a top up from our previous shop there 6 month age.

      Wow see I’m not the only crazy Alaskan. Believe it or not we get hate for large trips online because people don’t understand A it’s not always possible to get to a store and B we live over an hour and half each way on a perfect clear day.
      But yeah at lest something is cheaper. The prices from my first Costco haul to the most recent in 6 months went up 9% but I don’t know about you we didn’t get a 9% raise in that time. It’s out of control.

    • @redmapleleaf4617
      @redmapleleaf4617 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modernhomesteadalaska You get "hate" for large trips? I think those who don't do this are foolish. I'll bet when one goes weekly to Costco (if they live near by) that they are spending MORE than your 2-3 trips annually! I have always done it the way you're doing it. I would rather have a stocked pantry than the money in my purse! Because you just never know what could happen and especially during these times. I have a sister that literally has nothing to eat in the house since she shops weekly. She even buys rice in a 3 pound bag! And yeah, things are increasing in price so rapidly that I think it's actually a good "investment" to stock up on things that can sit on a shelf for years. And no, I surely didn't get a 9% raise! If it happens again with toilet paper what happened in 2020, heck, I may auction some of mine off for a tidy profit! lol

    Omg! You two must’ve won the lottery as from I understand, building in Alaska is super costly. Also, Costco is pricey by us in Florida. So, I’ll be curious to see how much money you spend. Cheers 😊

      From Arizona. We came to Alaska for lots of reasons. We knew once we were shut down snd life was stripped away Arizona was not where we wanted to be. Alaska is the most beautiful place. And had for us everything, ocean, mountains, seasons, green grass, snow, fishing…….

    Just wondering how long does all that food last you? And it seems like there's no food shortage there. I've seen others from Alaska showing they're having food shortages.
    And can I ask what your husband does for a living? To let you stay at home.

    • @modernhomesteadalaska
      @modernhomesteadalaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of fishing! We have now been here long enough and can finally hunt this year. But the season is not on us yet! We will be filling our freezer (with luck) from what we hunt and fish. We had to eat what we fished this past summer quickly because we only had a bottom freezer and when they were running heavy we didn’t have a freezer at all. So we ate it. Now I’m finally set to be able to store it all.

      You got that right! He was holding it together. He was about to leave his job of 16 years snd had no job lined up. We were dipping into savings to make sure we had what we needed for that season. No matter what it was so stressful for him. But he did it and we hit it done. Are it while he found work. And he is great about it all now. We try and show who we are in real life and a man who provides but also stress to try and do it above and beyond is my husband.
