- Every Commercial featuring everyone’s favourite Advert aliens, the Smash Martians! Just mention potatoes and they’ll be laughing their heads off! Because why bother peeling, boiling and mashing them when you can just use Smash? So primitive of us….
Also features some early animatics for the Ads, including ones that never even got made into proper Ads!
I loved these ads,when tv ads were more imaginative and entertaining than TV programmes

Fun Fact. The personalities of the Smash Martians were all improvised by the puppeteers having fun on set.
And they way they spoke was based on a bossy guy they worked with, if I recall correctly.

They were voiced by Peter Hawkins, the original voice of the Daleks in Doctor Who.
You can hear it in these robots voices, they do sound like Daleks.

@@martynbolam9932 That's an effect called a comb filter. The same effect can be heard if you talk into a fan. Try saying 'you will be destroyed' 2 inches from a running fan!

I hate ads, but these were hilarious.
Zippy was a spy sent by these aliens. Sadly the aliens died out because they were obsessed with instant mash potatoes and failed to maintain their space ships but Zippy is still around to this day, albeit in retirement.

I still think the first one was the best. At school many of us knew the dialogue word for word and laugh for laugh.

I miss the ads. Not so much the Smash which was quite vile and needed a lot of marge to mask the flavour.
Always ran to the TV set when these ads. came on. We'd be laughing for hours afterwards. The heyday of the enjoyable advert. What was the series of the running romance about I think,dark chocolate. We were agog to see how that turned out. Some ads.you really looked forward to,and miss even today. But then,TV was a novelty for many people,like cars,only one or two in the street.

Joss Ackland narrated loads of adverts, another I recall was for Rolos "soft creamy toffee in a milk chocolate cup"
my fav adverts when i was growing up in the 70s. encouraged me to do drugs in the 80s, and still find them funny as fuck
I bet i watched the same thing before, i'm glad that you reuploaded it since i saved some of the animatic adverts, thus, the Smash Martians were the best advert campaign i've ever heard from the brand.

After watching Black Mirror`s Demon 79 is was courius about what was the wierd Tv commercial. The sound as Doctor Who`s Daleks.
Simply hilarious. I hate Smash, but these ads almost had me needing Smoxygen. So clever and nothing these days can compare.

Because they are laughing at how “primitive” terrans make mashed potatoes the hard way instead of using Smash.

i remember these ads so welll, but these days i dont even think of cadbusrys for making potato products.
Cadbury's wanted themselves to be attributed as a general food company, but it didn't really work out because of their immensely popular chocolate products. The fate of the Smash production is that they've been sold off to Batchelors.

I always thought Smash would have made potatoes obsolete by now. How wrong I was.

It's called "Wheels Cha Cha", also known as The Muscle Man Tune.

I know that Cadbury does chocolate, and that’s what they’re usually known for. But they also done…….potatoes?
Not anymore, Cadburys sold the smash brand in 2006
@@edmundprice5276 It’s still kinda jarring to see Cadbury selling products that don’t pertain to chocolate. It would be like Hershey selling their orange juice brand.
I had a 'memory' of about 6 of those aliens rolling around on the floor laughing at us lot - seems like there were only two of them...and a dog🙄

I'm sure you are missing one. Anyone else remember one where the Martians are admiring a metal train and are then horrified when people get out of it. Or was that a comedy sketch ?
@@MrDuncl Chances are they are some lost Ads out there, never heard of that one though. Will show this comment to my ad-finding experts who are good at finding lost ads.
@@DJ3lectrical It is possible I am muddling it up with something else. I have just realised how similar the Martians are to the The Clangers Froglets who date from 1969.
On the Do You Remember Forum there is a long discussion about an advert in which the Martians look through their monitor at Huddersfield, see someone making Smash and decide "There is intelligent life on earth !"

I'm sure the Smash robot voices were done with a vocoder, that's certainly what they sound like.
@@DJ3lectrical SSB, Single Side-Band. It's a radio transmission mode, often used on Citizen's Band(CB) radio and other short wave transmissions, like ham radio. If it's not tuned-in perfectly, it can make voices sound like the Smash robots. :D

I bought Smash a few years ago, and I can confirm it DID taste like paper.
