Hey Laura! I'm becoming an Au Pair in Madrid in September - so excited!!! I was just wondering how you met people in Madrid? And how easy you found it to meet other young people? tysm
Hi Eliza! Congratulations! That's amazing. I met people through Facebook groups specifically for Au Pairs and exchange students living in Madrid. I would meet friends through those people too. Just have to put yourself out there and attend some group gatherings. I hope you're enjoying it!
Thank you so much for this video!! I'm so interested I already signed up and I'm looking for families I might be interested in lol. In regards to payment/salary - is that something you discussed with the families during the zoom call?
I'm so excited for you! Yes, we did speak about that on the call. I can't remember if I asked or they brought it up, but I think it's a very fair question ask so that you can make your decisions and weigh options.
Hey Laura! I noticed youre from Denver. I am also a native Coloradan, any chance you would be open to chatting on the phone so I could ask you some questions? I'd love to hear more about your experience and how you obtained visas and such being in Denver.
I traveled during the weekends. My family was flexible if I needed to fly out on a Friday or fly back on a Monday. But Saturday & Sunday was perfect for quick European travel! Some of my trips were closer to 4-5 days because I got the time approved with my host family.
Hello may I please ask a question? To do au pair in spain, more than 90 days we need a student visa! So we gotta find a accredited Spanish school which have 20 hours per week courses! This is for staying more than 90 days. But In case I want to stay only 3 months! Is it the same thing? Do I must do student visa and find the school ect...?
Thanks for this video! Im from poland, and I'm almost 17 yo. Next year im going to write matura exam and i will finish the highschool. Tbh for now I dont know what to do and I thought about gap year and being aupair. I would like to know a new culture and improve my spanish (cuz I've been learning spanish since 1 grade of highschool(for almost 3 years)) and I really like this language and how it sounds! I am quite calm and not a "party girl". I'd like to become much more independent and experience something amazing. Do you think that english on B2+/C1 level and spanish on a communicative stage would be enough? You mentioned about teaching English, do you think that most of host families require it?(I don't find me as a good English teacher because I am not a native speaker and I make mistakes) Do you think that host families are quite helpful at the beginning and help you get used to a new place? Sorry for so many questions but it's very important for me to know that♡ And I hope that I didnt make to many mistakes;)
Thank you for this comment and for watching! :) Becoming an au pair is definitely a great way to become more independent and it was a wonderful experience for me. With your level of English, I think you could begin the process of looking for host families and communicate to them that you are not a native speaker. Not all families prioritize learning English as much as others, they might just be looking for someone who will play more of a nanny role. You will just need to find the right fit for your situation! I do think that most host families, from what I've heard and experienced, are helpful with the transition and want you to feel at home with their family. I hope that's helpful and good luck!
Hi Laura, I really enjoyed your insights! I'm thinking of becoming an Au Pair either this summer or next summer, and I was wondering how much Spanish you knew prior to going to Spain. I have been learning for two years, and I have a basic understanding, but I'm nowhere near fluent. Do I need to be fluent to Au Pair?
Hi Alicia! I was not fluent at all. My family in Spain wanted me to teach them and their children English, so I ended up speaking English a ton while at home with them. I did learn Spanish while I was out exploring the city but definitely did not need to be fluent.
Hi Mallory! Yes, I had weekends off, and there were days here and there where the parents were home from work and I would have time to explore. I felt like I had so much time to explore Madrid on my own and was also able to explore with the kids during the summer.
Hey Laura! I wanted to ask if you could give me a deeper insight of being an au-pair without an agency. Like do I need to create a contract just to be safe? Im scared that the family will treat me badly if im not legally secured..
I was an au pair twice and decided to go without an agency both times. I feel like it both has its up and its downsides but I loved being more flexible, not having to pay any agency fees and going through an easier and quicker process. I would definitely recommend signing a contract with your host family. It’s not a must but helps to be clear and to prevent misunderstandings. Usually the family provides the contract and I would make sure that aspects like working hours, free time, tasks, pocket money etc. are clearly stated in the contract. In the end of the day it still can’t guarantee that you’re treated well. Neither can an agency though. I feel like the most important thing is listening to your gut feeling when you’re looking for a family and taking your time to decide. Have a few phone calls before choosing a family and speak to a few different ones to get a feeling for it. Ask lots of questions and talk to the previous/current au pair if you have the opportunity. Also make sure to communicate when things come up while living with your host family and know that there’s always the option to leave. They can only treat you badly if you let them. Easier said than done sometimes but an important reminder. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions. Hope you’ll have a wonderful au pair experience!
I want to be an au pair so bad 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 did you need any prior qualifications? I’m seeing so many live in nanny positions here in the states that require a lot of qualifications it’s almost overwhelming. I have so many years of experience raising children despite not having my own, I have a passion for nurturing children but im not sure how to get started as I don’t have the money to travel overseas to a family & Americans seem to be very concerned with certifications & qualifications. 😭
How cool an American au pair! I was an au pair 2014-2016 in Texas. I’m from Brazil. Good to hear from you
How fun! It's the best way to fully experience another culture. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for sharing your experience 🥺❤️
Of course!! Hope it was helpful.

Heyy!! Thanks so much for sharing…this was very informative! I do have a question….is there any drug testing involved?
It really depends on the family!
Can you make a video talking about visa options in Spain? And how you navigated that?
Hi Mechelle! I was only an au pair for the summer, so it was not long enough to need a visa in Spain.

Do you think it is always necessary to have a driving licence ?
I did not need one, but we lived in the city so everything was walkable. The family should specify if that's needed.

Did your au pair family give you any time off to explore? Other then when the kids were at school sleeping?
