  • @ChicagoMillingCo.
    @ChicagoMillingCo. ปีที่แล้ว +75

    The car fleet within Mexico is almost entirely Made in Mexico and you still see plenty of cars as far back as the 70s driving around in daily use. Mexico has been manufacturing vehicles since the 1930s. It's not like every vehicle there is also a lemon. The pick up trucks are especially impressive as over there people actually use pick up trucks for doing actual work and you'll see some 40 year old models still in battle going strong even when far past their lifespan Whatever decline in quality that comes out manufacturing in Mexico has more to do with the manufacturer who still oversees the quality control, factory design, material selection etc. That's especially relevant when you consider some car companies are run by penny pincher salesmen instead of automotive engineers. GM is an especially bad example of that. Sometimes when auto makers go overseas they not only try to save a buck through cheap foreign labor but they also start cutting costs elsewhere and the host country gets the blame. Not every German working to put together VolksWagen is an automotive engineer either. Assembly lines are for the most part routine work. You also have to remember in countries like Mexico the work environment is EXTREMELY competitive as having a job at a large foreign company like that is a blessing and for every worker there's 1000 other people ready to pounce on their job if they slack off in anyway. So you better believe they work their asses off and do the best job they can, the work ethic there is much higher than it is in the USA and a job like that is hard to come by. Don't blame Mexico, China, etc for the differences in quality, blame the manufacturer who's trying to make extra cash. Plenty of quality stuff comes out of Mexico. I remember buying a water pump for my 1966 Mustang while I was in Mexico. The new part was solid as a brick and made quite well unlike many of the new replacements you can find at auto zone that you can still see melted pepsi cans in the metal work. On the side of that new water pump it said "MEXICO". Similarly an uncle of mine owns a VW van with a Mexican 1600 that just doesn't stop. We still have my grandads Mexican 1974 F-600 dump truck which is still used regularly to this day.

      Mexican working class culture is a concept of pure dignity, you’d be surprised as here in the United States is work “smart” not “hard” well that working “hard” ethos takes you a long way and gives one an unshakable attitude in life, my mother and everybody i know have been told to “take it easy” or “hey relax, don’t work so hard it’s almost time to go” and my folks look at them like there crazy, work needs to be done, they feel unfulfilled not completing tasks at hand, u can see this effort on display by seeing construction of buildings being built so fast these days

      @@SocraticMind89 Mexicans work hard even when they are in the US, so I get what you're saying, but production line work SUCKS. The US have unions for the people that work on the line, but the Mexicans aren't protected. This means they get paid slave wages and possibly work in unsafe conditions. I'm not saying they don't work hard, but when you're overworked and underpaid at possibly one of the most tedious tasks known to man in probably unsafe (by US standards) conditions your work will suffer. That's just being a human.
      I doubt the domestic Mexican auto manufacturers treat their employees like slaves, plus they have pride in making cars for their own country.

      The simpler the vehicle, the easier it is to repair. Ford's Model T was so designed that the person of average mechanical skill could do minor repairs. Of course the car was arguably the worst car on the road at one time because it crowded out anything worse.
      Obviously we have some complexity built into cars out of concerns for safety (collapsible steering columns, crumpling bumpers, air bags), and emission controls (catalytic converters). All else not basic can break down.

    My dad has an old Audi A4 ( essentially a fancy VW ) made in Germany. It's been reliable and drives great even at 10 years old. But if something does break.. yes, it's going to cost a lot to fix.

    I once saw a VW eurovan that had been sitting for over 12 months for a brake job because the parts had to be shipped from Germany itself, I bet the mechanics love how much it costs to fix that nonsense. I still love seeing the birds and horses whenever you laugh, the pictures are perfect!

    I'm curious what a German taco would be.
    Never did I ever buy anything European and it'll stay that way. Over there, people keep saying the cars are just fine since they're made in-house. Over here they're money pits. We all know the only people who love Audi are the ones who can fix them or lease a new one every couple of years.

    My 09 Jetta wagon TDI blew up at 36k miles. Specifically, the fuel injectors grenaded into the fuel line. It was a $13,000 fix - not covered as warranty expired. After appealing to VW America, I was able to trade in. Btw these were the TDI’s that VW lied about their emissions. Learn from my mistake and avoid VW at all costs. I now have a Camry and love it!

    I have several family members with this car and they all have over 200k miles. For a 16 year old car, they are a great value. If you look at the construction quality, it is almost Audi level. The model after this had a significant drop in quality and cost cutting. This was the last real vw. Btw the vw/Audi plant in Mexico is one of VW groups most advanced plants. As for the repair costs, you can find the parts online for much cheaper, especially through FCP euro. Also, you can buy a VCDS unit for $200 to connect the car to your laptop, run diagnostics, clear error codes, recalibrate systems etc. For the DIYer, this is a terrific car with quality way above the Japanese and Koreans if you are willing to do some work and maintain them properly.

      Kudos to you Dave for posting this message. I've personally owned (3) Jettas: 2008, 2010(still have) and just recently...purchased a 2022 Mk VII GLI and absolutely love the car. What many people, especially here in North America, don't understand or respect is that the higher levels of German engineering require maintenance.....the owner absolutely "must" perform the required maintenance. Thanks again for presenting this side of the coin.

    I have a 2013 SEAT Ibiza which is a 2013 VW Polo with better styling and a sportier chassis. My one is in what they call the FR trim which is the model range below the high performance Cupra models. Its built at the Spanish VW plant but compared to the actual VW models it is actually less complicated and not too full of technology and still has keep fit windows in the rear and manual transmission. I have done over 73,000 miles from new in it (that is high to some people in the UK) and the only issues I ever had with it are a few months after I brought it new as the turbo failed (its electronic) and recently it has developed a creaking noise around the suspension area which is common with all VW's as its due to the anti roll bar bushes. However some of the engines on the higher powered Cupra's or the Czech cousin the Skoda Fabia VRS models of the same age do suffer with terrible oil burning and people have had to have engines replaced or rebuilt.

    I remember what my mechanic said. "There is the right way, wrong way and European way. If you want to put my kids through university, buy a VW or any other European branded vehicle. They unnecessarily complicated and parts are expensive.".
