I’ve spent 2-3 rounds on the bag just throwing jabs. Whipping jabs, power jabs, long range jabs, mid range jabs, jabs to the body, jabs to the head. I’ll even intentionally throw a jab to the side of the bag (missing it) and pulling it back quick to hit the bag with the same hand. Then 2-3 rounds doing jabs and lead left hooks. You’ll notice the difference in sparring. You’ll dominate the action and even when you’re tired your jab will still be in the game to defend you.
And I just know that left and right was a bopper, the snap from the years of punching like that will be insane, if you heard of Bob Foster, he used to do his roadwork running his miles with a 2 lb weight just pumping the jab throughout the run
The jab is just like the knife, arrow and bullet in boxing, the rest is like bombs and missles. The more you train the jab and aim it properly, you will penetrate your target very effectively. Great teaching sir!
“The secret to getting the (jab) to work the way you want it to work, you’ve got to train it, that’s the secret.” Coach, I love this! You could put anything in there instead of “jab” but definitely true with the jab also.

I remember my jab being really fast and accurate. Now because my arm is still (mostly my wrist) healing from a fissure I had playing football (soccer as you americans say it) my jab is drastically slower, it still has some accuracy. That doesn't mean I won't stop training though, thanks for the advice coach!

The power comes from your legs!!! Footwork Footwork Footwork!!! Use those legs like a spring!!! ...let the power flow from your legs...all the way through. This, I call your Power Jab...not to be confused with Flicking the jab.
The jab is considered the most fundamental punch, primarily used to establish range, disrupt an opponent's rhythm, and set them up for more powerful💥🤛punches to land effectively.
If you want a lighting jab try snapping at the elbow instead of the shoulder or even hips and see the difference. Work MRTs which is explosive endurance
Coach, that's a really good explanation. It's a good snap and fluid technique. We need an explanation too many people just start hitting bag with explaining how to do it.
Got that right Coach! I was working with this gal that was playing drums in a band . She had great ideas , but her fundamentals were bad and it showed . All she did is play full songs with her band . I told her I needed her to spend a few months just practicing the basic strokes and hits until they were clean . But she never did. A few months went by , then a few years and when it came time for them to make a real record , she wasn't ready and they broke up. We talked after and when she asked what went wrong I said "You spent 3 years avoiding 3 months worth of work ."
I am nearly 52 and need to start my boxing fitness and do more seriously and you have inspired me to hit the gym. Love your video and your in great shape.🔥🔥❤❤🙏🙏💪💪
@@coachcarl757_fitness Yes sir I hear you. Will kick start at the weekend as I am off work. Also will watch more of your videos to keep me inspired. Peace and blessings 🙏🙏💪💪
Thank you I am brand new to boxing just started last week. I was also watching another video that said speed and power is good but form and consistency is better when learning because if you cannot hit the bags right at 60-80 percent than you cannot do it at 100 because it will be sloppy. So I have been working on my basic jabs. I’m a lefty so I usually throw a right and a left or two rights and a left. And then occasionally I will do two rights and a left followed by another right but nothing crazy yet. And I try to watch my form and my footing and try to remind myself to move my head when I’m punching
My trainers were old school and uncles came from the era of Joe Walcott Ezzard Charles ike Williams etc trained with Liston when he first moved to Philly in the late 50s, they always told me jab til your sore 500 jabs alone at least each session, like mickey from Rocky movies said Jab till it hurts.
@@coachcarl757_fitness H,i I'm off down my local boxing club , st Joseph s boxing club Newport, home of world champion s , European champions, , British champions and Welsh champions, due to your inspiration, thank you coach , your respected around the world.
Every punch needs 3 phases, even the humble jab. First the power must go from the hand that's punching, to the opposite foot, then from the opposite foot back to the hand. That is the wave of energy, it's you driving yourself into the ground, and the collision with the ground reflects back to your hand. It's like two cars going 30mph in a head on collision, the energy is doubled. The Chinese called it tri-gram palm for a reason, the three aspects of the strike. Hard Hard Hard Soft Soft Soft or any variation therein as per the I-ching.
Thanks coach , I'm going to do this while shodow boxing every morning, makes plenty of sense, only one way to Carnegie Hall and that's practice, ty for vid
Is your momentum supposed to be forward when you jab or you supposed to drop your leg a little bit I know you’re supposed to keep your right hand right by your chin and bring it right back. I’m just curious if I’m missing anything thank you Coach.
Yeah coach, I done became your biggest fan! First comments when I can. I always try and twist the hips and land with the two knuckles. I also remember what Sugar Ray Robinson said "I picture punching at the organs or specific points on the body"
I heard something that made me think "most guys throw the jab to set up strikes or to get range but never use the jab to smash a guys face/nose" you can end a fight with good jabs you don't see it a lot anymore.
The trouble is most people don't throw it out there with intent. They just throw it out to keep people at range. Holmes is always known for his jab because he threw it to hurt....a bad intentions jab. I used to throw a left hook then a jab, sort of like a side flick jab. It always landed through the guard because people werent expecting it
To get more training and to get into the gym my coaches made me work 1 2 for the first 6 months of my training. And then they slowly started letting me train footwork and other things. My jab is still my best most consistent punch in my arsenal because of it.
As a young fighter,I broke my right hand in a street fight, I loved training, so for about 3 months solid, all I did was work the jab, best thing I ever did, was break that hand
Stay away from street fights if you’re as good as I think you are u could be a champion and make a good living as a fighter in the ring. Love the jab story
Dude walk by me and said I could never double jab him like that. So I just gave power shots with everything. I did see a helpless look on his face a couple of times and when I caught that floating rib I told him when he was quiet I told him you're right I couldn't double jab you like that.
Anyone with a great jab is very hard to deal with! Especially if there’s power in it. Trust me being on the end of one during a sparring session is not fun.😂
Hey, former pro, 116am and 12pro fights, und as a pro; did the deed for 15yrs. There are actually MANY different types of jabs… the lead is EVERYTHING in the ring - just like with karate/TKD/gung fu - that lead leg is EVERYTHING. You can set tempo with it, set the table, serve the meal, second third and fourth courses, deliver desert, pull the table cloth out from under them or just say to hell with it and know the whole table over - that bad boy can speak different languages if you tame it! That lead is everything. Sure, keep the other tools sharp, but this is the most important!
My dawg! I couldn’t agree more. Every fight strategy should start with the jab. You don’t realize how bad you need one until you don’t have one. Thank u for your reply. I pray everyone reads it. Heck of an insight.

💯 true. My Grandfather taught me to use weights in each hand and snap 500 with left and 250 with my right in front of a mirror.
Your Grandfather was my kinda guy. 100%
He took me to old school gyms as a little boy. Back when Bud Keys had a gym in East side KC. Bam Bam Scott was a family friend too.
And I just know that left and right was a bopper, the snap from the years of punching like that will be insane, if you heard of Bob Foster, he used to do his roadwork running his miles with a 2 lb weight just pumping the jab throughout the run
Yes Sir. It doesn’t take much weight. Grandpa would do sweat outs with a black trash bag and wear it like a shirt.
OMG YES. Did that too! Got the idea from an autobiography of Muhammad Ali. Dot me REALLY far in the golden gloves.
