Easiest Knifemaking Project Ever - Making a Shuriken (Japanese Throwing Dart) from Rebar

  • Okay, strictly speaking it's not a knife. But it's sharp and it's made of steel, so it's pretty darn close! In this video knife maker Walter Sorrells shows a ridiculously simple project -- how to make a bo-shuriken, or Japanese throwing dart -- from a piece of rebar. Three different methods are shown, including one which requires no power tools at all. In a second video, Walter will show the hand forging of a more sophisticated shuriken.

    Another easy way to do this; put rebar in chuck of a drill, put drill in vice, use drill as sort of a make shift lathe and use a file or axle grinder to make the point! How I made some tent pegs a while back.

    Another easy knife making project is making a kiridashi out of a flat wood drill bit. It's surprisingly easy to do, and most importantly it's a lot of fun. I don't have a forge or a way to temper steel yet, so I made one without using power tools to keep the steel as hard as possible, and it came out pretty well - the edge isn't too "volatile" and it's comfortable in the hand.

  • @rexterrocks
    @rexterrocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made a couple. I wouldn't have thought of using rebar had I not seen this. I have no power tools whatsoever and it took me a long time. I made a target at the bottom of my garden and ended up missing it and losing them both in the undergrowth. I was getting good at throwing them too. Fun little project, thank you.

    Great video. One thing I didn't hear mentioned was fire hazards of grinding ferrous metals on a sander used for wood. You MUST clean ALL wood dust/ chips out if the sander and dust collector port before you grind metal, the sparks can ignite the dust causing a fire or dust explosion. Always keep a fire extinguisher handy. Stay safe.

      @Dirty Mushroom: Yes, self defense is a no-brainer right everyone is entitled to ... but whether you like it or not, official rules of conduct (i.e., "civil laws") that apply equally to all are the foundation upon which all civilized societies are built, and which give meaning to the word "CIVIL-ization". People who are unable or unwilling to abide by the laws of the society they live in eventually tend to wind up in jail, and ignorance of the law is NOT a viable defense. If you don't like the laws of your State, your best course of action is neither remaining ignorance of nor flouting said law(s), but rather to work though appropriate channels to get them changed. It's either that, or your self defense will devolve to wearing soap on a rope.

Shurikens and spikes are the perfect weighed darts for my sling. Btw, the slinging world record can only be achieved by slinging heavy metal darts or those shurikens you made.

    Shuriken didn't need to be high quality steel , they were just a nuisance weapon to distract before a katana or yari attack . I made mine many years ago from a square shank screwdriver .
