Making Simple Throwing Spikes - Ninja Bo Shuriken

แชร์
ฝัง
  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 มี.ค. 2017
  • Making some simple throwing spikes also known as Bo Shuriken. They are made from 1/4 inch masonry bits.
    The tails of these bits are quite hard as they are designed to be hit by the drill so they will make good points. I opted for 6 mm bits so that the head is heavier, making them more stable in flight. They were also very cheap, paid under a buck each.

    TIP: if you decide to use a bench grinder or belt sander in addition to a drill like in this video, make sure the drill is spinning in a way that will make the surface move in the opposite direction than that of the grinding surface. This is why the bench grinder worked so much faster than the belt sander. (he switched the direction of rotation from the wrong way to the right way.).

    To all those that have or will ask if itll stick in wood , there are a few factors to that quesion .
    1. Hardness or softness of wood, pine is a real soft wood compard to say like oak or mahogany.
    2. Angle the the point of the dart , a sharper angle will stick easier but dull faster .
    3. Skill and force of throw , throwing somethin at a distance is harder to keep straight , but with enough force you can make anything stick in anything , an example is like a cannon ball vs concrete if it hits hard enough it can stick.
    There are a few more but those are the basics .
    I love vids like this thanks for the uploads i look forward to more

    @DaedalusProps 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is super cool! But in my experience with Bo shuriken, flat edges sink into a target with at least 3-4x more "bite" than a rounded conical profile.

    • @masterchain3335
      @masterchain3335 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it is definitely better to use flat angles when forming the tips. They penetrate target materials like wood better, and if you intend to use them as self-defense weapon (not saying I advocate this, just saying) lacerations are generally more effective than puncture sounds (if you've ever stepped on a nail, you know the wound usually just kinda closes back up when you pull the nail out).

    • @frro28
      @frro28 ปีที่แล้ว

      So using flat bits will be better.

    Would LOVE to see their range. It's easy to make a "throwing" with a short range that you need to learn to throw with a half spin or full spin from a few feet back from the target. But a REAL throwing knife will act like a dart and still fly as many feet as you want and ALWAYS land with the tip embedded into the target.

    In what country is it cheaper to use new hammer drills cut up rather than used and worn out used ones?
    Also, if you spin the drill in the opposite direction of the sanding belt, it would work much better.
    Deadly on foam, but how about wood, or perhaps meat?

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I've answered all these questions a dozen times or more, but hey, why not once more! Could you point to me to that part of the video where I say you should use new bits? Also I paid 3 bucks total for the drill bits so it's not like I'm getting bankrupt because of it. As for used drill bits first is that I use quality bits, $15-20 or more a piece and they last forever, I think I only thrown away one in my entire life because the shaft broke, else they only get a little thinner, but are still usable for smaller holes. And second, unless you are a professional who drills holes all day, good luck finding 3 or more matching used drill bits. Using new cheap China bits I can easily make a set of ten darts for $10.
      The sander is really under powered that's why I'm spinning that way, else it would stall the belt. In the bench grinder section you can see I spin it the way you want.
      The foam target thing I won't answer anymore, feel free to read my other answers if you want or whatever.

    I'm thinking a trip to Ace hardware when I drag out of bed in a few hours to pick up a few of these bad boys to use as bolts / arrows with a modified sling shot/sling bow.
    Sat down and drew up an aluminum or copper tube to overlay the shaft in order to secure two or three vanes/fins to it via "soldering" or an adhesive used to bond aluminum in the manufacture of aircraft.
    Thank you for a nice video and a great idea even though it's not quite what you originally intended them for.

    • @dragongod666sevagoth3
      @dragongod666sevagoth3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gary Riegelsberger A bit of both, you grab it by the long handle, and throw it in a knife-grip fashion, and throw it like a shuriken, while trying not to make it rotate But that's what the flag it for, it acts like the fletchings on a dart, or an arrow, making it fly straight, without rotation, anyway.

    Only thing I gotta say besides nice is that sound of the hacksaw and the drill bit killed my ears.

    don't know if it has been mentioned yet..... you could keep the scarf on by using thread wrapped around it instead of glue, it would last longer and look more authentic

      Original ones had silk thread passed trough the hole then bent back and tied, to form something like a brush. I liked that method better, but was in a hurry to finish them that's why I used the cloth.
