21.08.1983 Grand Prix 500cc. Last race of the year with title chances for the Belgian André Malherbe (Honda) and the Swede Hakan Carlqvist (Yamaha). Malherbe wins the Grand Prix, but the nervous Carlqvist will be the New World Champion with 7 points difference. Leading roles further for the Englishman Graham Noyce (Honda), and the Belgian André Vromans (Suzuki) and the Dutchman Gerard Rond (on an older Works Suzuki), who has his best race ever in the GP 500cc. And more than 12 minutes broadcasting time on Television at Studio Sport for Motocross, times were went!

I wish there were still tracks like this, fast, fun, and not stupid dangerous. Everybody thinks you have to have 100' triples, 140' tabletops, and Huge whoops. This looks like way more fun.

Why is there always old people on these old videos with the obligatory " real men, real bikes, real motocross". Newsflash, not trying to take anything away from these guys but they couldn't hold a candle to a rider today. First they lack 40 years of technique including scrubbing, brake dragging, flow, rhythm. Second a 450 is alot faster than these bikes. A 450 makes torque EVERYWHERE why they are so good at supercross. And last these racers literally would party and drink beer after the races. Ricky Carmichael brought about the era of ultra fitness. Guarantee there wasn't one guy back then that was on a regiment like Aldon bakers. He literally makes professional riders live in his training facility and doesn't let them go out or do anything.

You young riders are blazingly fast and you can jump over a single story house and still are racing. 450s now are so trick and powerful oh yeah about the beer some of the riders used to drink the night before the race. lots of laughs

I wish Lackey could have defended his title, he deserved a full year with the big number 1 on his plates. Regardless, the 500cc GP's were the pinnacle of the golden era of motocross.

The great hard man of motocross 'The Dentist' broke is finger on a post so tapped it to the next and went out for the next race. Gerard Rond, Andre Vromans sand master, Noyce so many great racers what a time to race 500cc monsters and the smell of Caster oil.

I do miss the big 500cc, two-stroke bikes. I'd love to see a new crop of MODERN open class two-stroke bikes.

@@mike300406they are a handful, but they are still so much enjoyment! Still ride my 1988 KX500 very often. Almost every weekend, and it’s still very nice.

A geezus that Full Floater suspension system on the Suzukis was good, look even back then how controlled it was, pity a suzuki never out the water cooled factory RM500 that Harry Everts was riding into production, dam shame and another one Suzuki’s destructive weird management decisions, nothing much has changed with them today, still committing Seppuku!

He had it together, and knew how to make it happen. Great MX champion. Smart, extremely fit, and MX skills beyond almost all the others of his time. Top echelon MX racer.

This was the first mx race i ever saw as a young kid...from there on i loved 500ccm bikes especially the water-cooled suzuki rm 500...45min motos were for real men...

Agreed! Such masterful throttle control along with body positioning and braking. Modified suspension (works technology making fast gains those days) made for some very fast MX bikes on wide open outdoor MX bikes! A simply grand era…

it went to all 250 2 strokes.. 500 was discontinued by the FIM bcoz they were seen as too powerful and dangerous

@@joelvela4366you should ride one! They are really enjoyable. Be careful, and it’ll reward you with loads of fun. BUT…throttle control is very important. Actually much easier to ride than ALOT of 2-stroke 250’s; tons of torque, and just pull like lightning. I enjoy riding my 1988 KX500 a lot more than my 1996 CR250! The CR250 is a light switch on power! The KX500 is waayyy more power, but not quite so instantaneous unless the clutch is slipped slightly…then you have to know what’s coming! It’s more predictable though.

Not true actually. Suzuki and Yamaha hadn't had a top ten finish in 10 years. Sales were low and the enviro geeks were slagging two strokes. So pressure from the manufacturers and geeks conspired to end the two stroke open class era. Not to say that the bikes aren't awesomely powerful (I have a CR500) but that wasn't why they were killed off.

Sales lagged for many reasons, mostly because of the lack of development, Yamaha basically wasn’t ground breaking even when they went the 490, stock it detonated like a hot hand grenade, Suzuki, hadn’t made a real effort since the 70s in the open class after DeCoster and even he left Suzuki because they weren’t listening and developing the bike, (open class) They made a one off Factory bike for Harry Everts after not even offering a contract to current World Champion Brad Lackey who won for them, but mostly on parts he could get elsewhere for the bike, Suzuki.we’re more interested in supporting Vromans not Lackey!
Sales declined because why would average joe buy the same bike every year when the only developments were happening in the 250 and 125s, as Usual America screwed everything up, just like cars today we have shit box sewing machine SUVs for soccers mom generation pussie CVTs and other crap for fat lazy let everything be easy with 50 cup holders and a leather bitt scratcher.

@@philosborn1840 Yes. This was his second title. His first came in 1979 in the 250 class. He passed away in 2017 at only 63.
