Fantastic vid. Hard to imagine its 42 years ago. ’82 was maggo’s year. He’d earned a full-on honda factory ride. Was the upset winner of the usgp at carlsbad where he later in the year won the superbikers. Then add in his unprecidented sweep of the mx and trophy des nations and he was sitting on top of the worls. Some race related administative transgressions cost him his honda ride and he went overseas to contest the FIM 500cc world championship. Unlike an unknown rookie or washed up american veteran he was immediately competitive winning the french gp and placing well in the other races of the series. Sadly, we all know how it ended and it was a cruddy shame. He deserved better. I was fortunate to have seen him race here in southern California and he was a sight to behold. Fast and fearless would begin to describe him. All eyes were on him whenever he was on the track. His style was thrilling. One of a kind rider. we’ll always remember him. One of a kind rider.

Magoo was always my favorite rider and still is, I moved to Nor. California in 1975 and he was riding KTMs for Woodland Cycle, got great pics of him over the years at Sacramento Raceway, Hangtown/Prairie City, Dixon, Plymouth (old hangtown track). I still have the original Cycle News from when he won all four motos of MX and Trophy De Nations in 1982 and when he beat Steve Wise in ABC Superbikers. I met him a few times over the years and he help me out at the races a couple times. In 78 I was on the starting line at Dixon on my RM 100 and I look back and notice my silencer mount was broken and my pipe was all wobbly, nothing I could do at that point, just before gate drop I feel something and look back and its Magoo with some bailing wire he found and he fixed up my pipe for me. In 81 I was riding an RM 125 at Marysville and he had some factory Suzuki support at the time, I broke a chain tensioner and asked if he had one, he said sure and gave it to me, I was in his race that day, but I never saw him. Not long before he died they had a Magoo get together at a local shop, Magoo, Brad Lackey and Donny Cantaloupe were there, I gave Magoo a stack of the photos I took of him over the years. I forgot too, Magoo promoted some mountain bike racing in the mid 1990's in his home town area of Foresthill and I have a couple Magoo trophys from those races and saw him and talked to him few times. Good days. RIP Magoo

Fantastic! So glad to see this video preserved, shared and with such terrific commentary! In English!
1982 was THE year of America in Motocross Grand Prix racing. Brad Lackey was the first to win a world championship on the 500’s, Danny LaPorte gets the 250 win in his very first full year, and then this🤯. Magoo was BRILLIANT!
This was the true golden age of motocross…of Motorsport in general in my opinion. The 1970’s-1980’s were just the very best years of motocross, Rally, F1, touring cars, sports cars….just everything!

Something is definitely odd that neither reigning World Champion was on the US team. Politics, pull, something. Probably wouldn't have made a difference but still something was up.
Good to see an old garage-mate and club comrade in Arner Lindfors on the Yamaha...Saw Tea-leaf Hansen in riding gear..Thought he retired at end of 79 season??? Not sure..I was busy doing woods races in the US and going to university so didn't pay attention like when I lived in Sweden.
Anybody know where the full results are?

Magoo was my favorite rider along with Hannah and Bad Brad. I started watching or following mx on wide world of sports and sx in 78 and still watch it at 64. And Deegs is my favorite rider. I was in my second 2nd year of serving in the Marines and was stationed in Hawaii.

Crazy to imagine those 2 stroke 500's are faster than the big 4 strokes we ride now... and way less comfy in suspension!

Really was tragic how things ended up going for Magoo. I've seen some vids of his early days after his nasty crash and they were up-beat..But seems he really went downhill after a while...So sad. Shouldn't have happened that way..
