  • Tom's Key Company believes that an extra car key should not be ridiculously expensive. Visit tomskey.com/?u...
Watch this video as I’ve prepared a hidden camera to see what a car dealership does and let’s see how it compares between Tomskey company and the dealership making car keys.
Don’t get ripped off by a car dealership to get a new spare key when you have Tom’s Key Company.
Tom's Key enables individuals to program new car keys and remote fobs for their vehicle at a fraction of the price most car dealerships charge. We also believe the customer service should be excellent and if it doesn't work for your vehicle, you deserve a full refund.
We also have solutions for many other vehicle brands including GMC, Chevy, Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota, Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Lexus, GM, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and more.

Our transmission guy put the car up on the rack and sprayed cleaner on it and let it sit all day, charging them for a rebuilt transmission.
When this particular bushing went bad the transmission made a horrible metal-on-metal screeching noise so it was plausible to the customer this was the problem.

When you took the day off from work and they stamp "CUSTOMER WAITING" on the work order and your car is the third one in line when they open first thing in the morning, and send you to the waiting area, but then you see a valet driving your car to the rear parking lot behind the service area, and more than three hours later it's still parked. Then finally, your car is brought into a service bay, where a "technician" opens up the hood, fumbles with something in the engine compartment, then walks away for coffee and a cigarette. Same "technician" returns to your car, shuts the hood down, then drives your car to the Customer Car pick up area, you're presented with the bill by the "Service Advisor", and it shows 4.3 hours of labor, plus $178.95 for "parts" and $38.41 for "shop supplies".😮

I drove to the dealership and spoke with the same "Service Advisor" from the day before about the missing cover, and asked him to check around the service bay where the car had been "serviced". He went into the work area and returned after a few minutes and said he had just spoken to the"technician" who had worked on the car the day prior. He stated "the splash pan was missing when you brought the car in the first time, and he ain't goin' to lie." That dealership went out of business within a year after that, so I imagine my experience was not unique.

Add in the key/cutting and it was maybe $60-65 with tax. Dealerships are an absolute rip-off and many times they're short staffed and hiring mechanics who have to be heavily supervised as they have no experience.

Well, there is another side of a coin. A friend of mine tried to program a key in old mercedes (2004 s320 w220) and had to change 2 gearbox control units, they both locked up by some kind of a antitheft program. And the first time he did not understood thats a key to blame as there was some kind of a counter - the car allowed 10 startups with improperly programmed key before frying the gearbox brains)

p.s. that was a keyles go car indeed (if that is what you've ment by a transponder key). though i think this problem i equally possible for cars without keyless as well. And i think that may also happen to all the cars with a "fish" key, including earlier ones from like 1998. Allthoug i've heard that older 5g-tronic control unit can be reprogrammed afterwards and is twice cheeper anyway, than brains for newer 7g-tronic cars (that started apperaing in 2004).
p.p.s. and to be fair, it is now definitely possible to find workshops that can properly cut in a key for that era mercs. i have another friend with 2005 CLS 500 (and again, 7G tronic car with the same gearbox control unit), who did succesfully bought and programmed a new key without dealer like 2 year ago (first story is like 10 year ago), and the car is still ok. Back in the 2000's they would sell pre-cut keys for $50 (they had like 15 pre-cuts for all cars) and charge $200 to program it - which was: turn ignition on 5 times quickly, on the 6th time, you leave it on, and it programs the chip in the key. My salesman programmed my key for free.

I'm an automotive locksmith and to say that there were 15 precuts is simply false. If you are talking about old GM Vats keys there were 15 transponder values. Those keys were not pre-cut. There were thousands of different codes. I'm not going to go into the entire thing but the vehicle needed to be interrogated which could take anywhere from 4 minutes to hour depending which value that car took. You had have a key code and make a test key. Once you found the value you would copy the test key onto the permanent key. If you were talking about anything else there were never 15 precut keys of anything.

And even if the actual programming takes just a few minutes, all the time goes into dealing with customers and stuff. C. I bought an aftermarket Lexus key that had a remote and blade. The body broke eventually. I paid the premium for a factory key after that. Oh, and I program all keys at home with an IM608, so no labor charge for me or friends. But if I had to bill random customers that I have no rapport with for it, it would be in line with the dealership.

Recently, the brakes on the Focus made a grinding sound at 47000 miles, so I dropped it off. They called me two hours later, and said my brakes were fine, but it looks like the car hasn't been driven for a while and the rotors developed surface rust. This was the case. I had not driven it in a month. He told me I could drive it and the rust would wear off - no charge, or they could do a very light resurfacing of the rotors while on the car - charge $150. I chose the resurfacing. He told me that in wet weather, which we had been having, I should take the car for a drive once a week. I'll call BS on this one. Your hidden camera did not catch Ford at anything that could be considered a rip off. Your wait time was 2 hours instead of leaving the vehicle for the day. Yes, it took an hour before they started work, but big surprise here, they do not drop everything when you walk in the door. As to the cost of the FOB, there is a difference between genuine OEM parts and aftermarket. Perhaps there is something in this which allows you to beat the OEM part, but all too often, you get what you pay for. I think they dropped the ball when they did not cut the mechanical key, but that is easily resolved and likely at no extra cost. I would agree in general that dealer rates are too high, but everyone is entitled to their business model. Is it expensive?, yes. Is it a ripoff?, no.

Due to lack of interest, that service was eliminated and replaced with an automatic self-serve key cutter that doesn't cut ANY fobs or do ANY programming. Even now that the fob keys are not available anymore people don't even ask if there's any way to do that. Glad to hear great experiences using our solution, especially with helping people save time and money over expensive dealership quotes. Thank you for taking time to leave us with a great review.

“I’m about to get ripped off by the Ford Dealership” yes. That happens every time anyone drops their car off at a dealer.

I had to pay $300 to get a brand new Acura fob from Honda because every refurbished fob we got remembered it's previous fob and our locksmith couldn't reprogram them. The Acura dealership then charged $80 to program, cut the key blade, and the also washed my car for me.

I needed a second key for my used 2010 Traverse. I took me longer to self check out of Lowes with my $45 spare than it did to program it.

Ever notice how happy they sound at the "service desk"? What they're saying really is: Glad to take your money.

Here in South Africa there was a mechanic that once said " its not them that are sly its the customer that is stupid".

Most fobs have a physical key you can use in a physical lock hidden in/on the door. Read your car's manual. Nobody ever does for some reason. You can get it online if you need to.

FORD WOULD SAY THAT THIS WAS NOT A RIPOFF BUT JUST THE COST OF DOING BUSINESS...
    WITH THEM.
    UNREAL!

I have a 2006 Hyundai Azera and the ignition key started to no longer turn all the way to start the engine. I called a local Hyundai dealership and they quoted me about $1541 for a new ignition switch, housing, and 2 new keys.
I called a local locksmith who did the same thing for about $480, and he came to me!
Dealerships are not always the best places for service.

In all fairness… Tom’s Key Cutting doesn’t have a corner lot at a major intersection (property tax, etc.) for many years, doesn’t offer coffee and ‘probably’ doesn’t have a smokin’ hot receptionist. So it doesn’t surprise me that it would be cheaper. But your point is still made (cheaper, easier and clearly…faster). Thanks for the video.

I went to get a fob for my new 05 lesabre. They wanted $220 and supposesly only the dealer can do it. Glad I still have the option of using an actual key!

I literally had a Ford dealership owner tell me they do this crap because they can. They tried to charge me $120 just to diagnose a problem on my car.

I’ve always known to avoid dealerships. Only purchased 2 new cars so far and never taken any cars to dealers for recalls because I don’t trust them. It’s also important to buy cars that have very few recalls.

folks i am a retired auto mechanic with 32 years experience and when it comes to pricing for a service the dealerships tend to be the worst place to bring your car. a big part of the problem is dealership mechanics may get an hourly guarantee but it will be 25-30 hours at best so if they are not trying to sell a lot of jobs they are not making money. most everything at a dealership is based off of book time, there are books like Chilton that will give you an estimate on how long a certain job takes and the dealership or shop bases their price off that time and their hourly rate. and most dealerships these days have an hourly rate of $150 dollars or higher! and then their are thinks like recoding keys and key fobsand these prices are super inflated too!
these days everyone wants to steal your money and auto dealerships are some of the worst!

Bought cheap blank key and fob online for $16. Had the key cut for $3 at local hardware store. Removed chip from new key and excess plastic material to insert old chip directly into new key. Has worked for a year now never a problem. Ford Taurus 2015

My step-daughter was calling local police or AAA a couple of times a month OR calling us (her parents) to bring her the spare key because she kept locking her keys in the car.
I sent her to a locksmith to have a few key blades cut. She has them stashed in various places just so she can unlock the car doors.
Also, I found a tv repair shop that could replace the tiny circuit board buttons on the key fob for my Jaguar. One button didn't work. A new fob was $560 plus programming. He replaced all four buttons for $40. I then have him a $40 tip!

I think Tom's Keys are fantastic. I bought the programmer for an 11 Ram and 11 Ford Escape. They worked great. I did have 4 switch blade keys cut at our Ford Dealer and they didn't charge to cut the keys, I brought in my own blanks. A local lock shop wanted $400 for a key, cutting and programming a single key for my 15 Focus. I plan on ordering the Focus programmer from Tom's Keys in the near future.
