    What's been your favorite video? Wild that I've been making videos for 3 years already and have almost 12k subs. Cheers and thanks for following along my little journey here. :)

    you having only 12k subscribers in youtube have non sense, I consider my self someone who watch only good and valuable content and your content is really good... maybe is too simple and is not click baity or whatever, but is pure and always have valuable info.. Saludos desde Cuba 👋

    Your “I’m just a guy who knows nothing but am documenting it for those who are interested” is why I’m subscribed. Many long time game developers (like myself) are just hobbyists. It’s nice to have channels that casually speak their mind as they’re working through stuff. No clickbait, no soliciting, and no “trying to make it big” on TH-cam vibes. Just an average guy excited to talk about his passions.

      Yo, exactly. I think in the past few months this has become my new goal with the channel. Just share my journey for the sake of sharing it.

    There are so, so many games on Steam these days, I never would’ve found Chess Survivors without seeing your TH-cam channel first. So at least one sale came from that. 😊

      Same with me, I don't think I would have heard of either that or Hexagod, if not from here. So it is definitely generating some of those Steam sales. :)

    I enjoy your videos! We worked together for a bit previously and you mentioned Chess Survivors one time, so I found this and have been enjoying your journey thus far. It may not be financially viable to continue this route, but I'm sure there's an aspect of putting your ideas down like this that can act like a rubber duck and help focus your thoughts too.
    Regardless, happy to see you're continuing to do well and I enjoy the content!

    I've been watching some of your videos over the last few days as I try to figure out where to even start with something I want to do with godot. Some I was watching for a second time, after seeing them a little earlier when first thinking of this. You explain things really well. I also find the concrete examples really helpful.
    The first time I saw Hexagod, I thought "that looks cool, should take a look", but promptly forgot as I thought about other things. As I watched more videos, that put it more and more in my head, whilst obviously thinking about my own project (I was looking for these videos for a reason after all). Increasingly I thought "I really need to check that game out".
    Yesterday I finally added it to my wishlist, and tried the demo. I enjoyed it, and it has a lot of potential to be a game I'll really like. I'm not sure I would have even heard of it before, or if I did, it would have been amongst many other options to buy. Because of these videos, I am very likely to buy it when it's released because I think I'd quite enjoy it.
    Just wanted to give you that feedback. I don't know how many people will find your game through this channel, or how worthwhile that will be vs the time taken, but that is how I found it. Can't wait to see more.

    It might not always be worth it from the creator's perspective. But from me, a fellow developer (a beginner even), TH-cam definitely helps a lot. There are videos of niche game engine problems i have that has been solved by a video from channels with less than a thousand views. Viewers might not always leave a like or comments, but the creators definitely helped peoples out there.

  • @paxtianplays8735

    Really appreciate your honest perspective. I'm just starting to make videos on here. I wanted to make games after I played my very first one at 6 years old. I got a CS degree with that intention, but realized after getting it that it had barely gotten me any closer to what I wanted to know. Life took a turn, but finally about 2 years ago I got into Unity and made what I would consider my first game (a very short simple vertical ship scroller like Xevious on the NES). Even though it's barely anything, I felt like that was such an incredible moment in my life.
    So I want to make videos to help others bring their gaming visions to life, and to push myself to continue along this path. Your video was really inspiring and I appreciate that you shared it. It's clear you are passionate about what you're doing and it's really great that you're willing to be vulnerable on here. Thanks so much.

    EDIT:
    On the other side, you and your channel were the final push I needed to really commit to my solo projects in the commercial sense. The devlogs Ive made of my game have lead to a lot of relationships that led to partnerships and funding and meeting some very high profile people that helped me out a ton. So indirectly youtube has been financially helpful to me even though I make pennies per upload. So it is SUPER worth doing if your a game developer. Just make good / enguaging videos and the algorithum will show your stuff to more people. (basically, I agree with your video that its not a direct source of income, but is still super worth doing).

    • @Aarimous
      @Aarimous  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Thanks for being so open with us!
    Do you go into your one take videos with a plan or an outline of what you want to talk about? Or just a main topic/theme that you riff on? Do you ever record and then decide to scrap it and try again, or try something else? I need to pivot my videos to something a little easier/less time consuming to make, but still valuable so I'm looking for alternatives.

    • @Aarimous
      @Aarimous  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My current process is to make the video I want to make at the moment. Typically these are topics that I have been thinking about for a while or in some cases I'll be inspired by a game I see, stream I watch, or another YT video. So although I try to do "one-take" recordings, I have likely thought through the way I want to communicate the idea. In the past I have spent a lot of effort making scripts and doing multiple takes which can help with communicating a cohesive idea, but at the cost of time and energy. A huge perk of having made a ton of YT videos and having streamed on twitch for over a thousand hours is that I have far more comfortable communicating my thoughts in front of a camera. So nowadays I am able to sit down, press record, and more or less just go for it. I'm not able to do one task every day, but right now that is the goal. Good luck!

    • @JoeTheis
      @JoeTheis หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Aarimous thanks for the reply. You definitely seem like a natural at it (though I know that's mainly just the thousands of hours of practice). I guess I just need to get comfortable with it sucking for a while. 😆

      My biggest piece of advice is to focus on finding your own voice. The way I went about doing this was looking at the content I like to watch and starting there. Then given enough videos it will start to click. For me I feel like I only recently (August) found my voice and style.

    Not a gamedev (yet), but wanted to throw in my thoughts as I'm coming close to a year of posting gaming-related videos on TH-cam. I think it is possible for your YT channel to be a decent amount of revenue even at relatively small amounts of subscribers - though it will obviously depend on the money you need to spend on rent/bills/groceries/etc. Gamedev videos in particular may not pull as many views, especially if they're devlogs of a particular project, though I've seen the more general videos about game design and various tips for gamedev doing quite well. Imo if you want to have a decent income from YT you have to branch out a little bit outside of just devlogs/gamedev videos - perhaps analyze some popular games and their features from various game design perspectives, make more generally applicable gamedev content, etc. As long as your videos can pull some thousands to tens of thousands of views, as well as hopefully continue to be relevant so that people keep finding and watching them, you don't really need your videos to go viral (over 100k views or whatever). Of course, this is my perspective as someone who enjoys making guides and discussing various aspects of games, so obviously that kind of content is more likely to stay "evergreen" (not necessarily forever, but for long enough).
    I was honestly surprised that in less than a year of uploading videos once a week-ish, I'm getting close to the point where I would be making the minimum salary per month in my country basically 99% out of ad revenue. Haven't figured out how taxes work yet, so that will obviously take a good chunk of the income away, but it's still surprising to me that it was possible to get to this point relatively quickly (especially since I started the channel as a hobby so I could ramble about my favorite game, lol).
    Not sure whether my experience will be helpful to game devs looking to make some income from YT, since making videos will take time away from actually developing your game. But it can be something worth exploring since it will absolutely take way less time and effort than a full-time job would.

    I have scrapped hundreds of hours of work just over the past year of doing GameDev simply because of a new idea, I have only recently reached my first year of doing game dev. I have thought about doing videos for it though, maybe even super boring long videos just to document progress, and eventually when I have a showable game, I can make something of it.
    Game dev is a lot more than I had bargained for.

    I do think the advantages of youtube are difficult to quantify. The most obvious one is that making a video game is a long journey and making a game alone (or mostly alone) can be extremely isolating. You're constantly meddling with your own thoughts, wondering if the game is even good. And so, just having an outlet in my opinion is very valuable. It is like, unless somebody can see the game it might as well not be real. Yes, the youtube comments are not exactly the most useful feedback, but I think that's also down to the kind of game you are making?
    People will be much faster to criticize a first person shooter, like does shooting or reloading look satisfying? Does the movement look interesting? Is there a sense of flow in the gameplay that you can feel even just by watching? Because these things are surface level and everybody can have at least an opinion on them. This is a lot harder for a puzzle game.
    Some suggestions of my own. Take this with a grain of salt as I am not part of your target audience, but do consider marketability of a game, some games are easier to sell because gameplay footage is attention grabbing, anyways:
    I think the game needs more spice. The tilegrid, or your 'mainboard' needs to pop more. Perhaps make certain elements of the tiles semi-3d, like cutout cardboard cacti on a desert tile that "unfold" when the tile spawns. Orr, make the tilesprites scroll? And or animate smaller details inside the tile sprites, like the waves of the water tiles moving a little and the grass tufts of the plains tiles swaying in the wind. In general I think, if there is a way to make a game feel less 'gamey/gamified' it's a good idea to do that. That's like the first thing that comes to my mind, but I can't comment on the gameplay (is the strategy fun or no?). That's something people can only ever comment on if they get to play the game.

    I heard most big channels don’t do shorts on their main channel because shorts subscribers kill click thru rate as in shorts ppl don’t watch the long form video, making your long forms less likely to “trend”.

      Currently I am making the videos I want to make in the moment. But I'll have spent some time thinking about what I want to say and how to say it. I don't write scripts and the time "thinking" is usually done when my brain is in idle mode doing chores, driving, or what ever.

    So if someone does not enjoy TH-cam content creation for its own sake, would you recommend not pursuing that for game marketing purposes? It's very common for people to recommend TH-cam for boosting wishlists for a game during the development process, but I personally think that you need to have the passion for TH-cam in itself for that option to work. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
