  • Why Did Fabrizio Betray Michael Corleone? Who Killed Apollonia?
In the Godfather, we embark on a journey to the hidden world of the mafia, a dangerous world full of betrayal and deceit. We are introduced to various characters all with their own self interests in mind, but hide it behind smiles and handshakes. Don Vito Corleone was the head of the most powerful mafia family in the country, not only did it come with status and respect, but also immense wealth, he owned various businesses and had various investments in the financial and real estate markets, in addition to controlling various criminal activities and businesses all across the country. Putting him at the head of a multi billion dollar organisation.
However, there does come a price, greed, jealousy and envy are extremely powerful motivations for people, and when combined, it becomes extremely dangerous for everyone.
Such was the case of the Sicilian bodyguard, Fabrizio. Who after developing a bond and friendship with Michael as he hid in Sicily, later sold him out, out of greed and spite.
But Fabrizio was no mastermind that would be willing or even able to conjure such a bold and daring plot, just to satisfy his jealousy and growing resentment towards Michael. Rather, he found himself as a pawn in a much larger game. This was no more than a ploy used to benefit far more powerful individuals.
And so the question is, who is the true master mind behind this and how does it play a role in the overall mafia war,
Was the real target Michael or Apollonia?
And did Michael get his revenge in the end, if so how?
Who was truly behind this attack and why?
And so that’s what we will be answering, giving you the complete picture of how this event was such a pivotal turning point and had completely changed that world forever. Its such important event that is often overlooked, but plays an imperative role in the story of the Corleone family legacy.

Not sad. Michael was a ladies man but found Kay to be beautiful and was attracted to her. You’re not the protagonist, Michael is. Your taste in women is irrelevant here. It is stated clearly in the book. We get you hate Kay but Michael truly loved Kay in the movie and the book. Michael says so himself. It’s sad for you and others who probably only watches these movies to jerk off to women and base his or her entire opinions of characters based on that.

As soon as Apolonia is killed, that was when Michael Corleones humanity dies. His descending into darkness begins as soon as he returns back to America. That kind of heartbreak numbed him. The death of his older brother Sonny, the attempt on Vito’s Life that nearly killed him and the murder of his Sicilian wife all molded him into the cold blooded calculated Don that became so heartless that he ordered the murder of his own Brother Fredo.

I wonder if Michael wasn't fundamentally changed when he got back to New York after the war. He talked to Kay at Connie's wedding about that's "his family but not him"... but he didn't sound or act convincing at all. He methodically walked around like his head was waaay far away... instead of celebrating and drinking/dancing and having fun like Sonny.
Whether or not that is true there's NO doubt that you're right about killing McCluskey and the Turk... he was totally changed after that.

Fabrizio exits pizza shop, looks around, confidently gets into car. Tries to start car but engine stalls a little. He looks up and sees Michael standing on the sidewalk. Car blows up. This allows Fabrizio to know who and he will know why. It also shows Michael getting justice for Appollonia

      Too cartoonish.
Fabrizio has been paid for a job by the enemies of the Corleone family. His fate catches up to him and he is killed by a bomb in his car. The enemies of the Corleone family (the only ones that count in this story) get the message.

That didn't turn Vito dark. Vito grew up poor and humble, had a wife and children and was happy. Even when he turned to a life of crime, he was still humble. It was Don Fanucci and seeing how he took advantage of other Italians that reminded him of Don Ciccio, that's when he turned dark, but at the same time he still was compassionate and loved his family as opposed to Michael, who became very cold blooded.

In the end, the move of having even Fabricio, a lowly pawn, taken out at the same time as the other heads of the families was more valuable in establishing his power and fear. It sent the message that it didn’t matter if you were a Don or a peon, cross Michael and you’re dead.

However, since number of years had passed by since the car explosion in Sicily, during which Michael would have gone through numerous steps forward into legalizing his family’s business and cleansing their reputation. So the more mature and experienced me nowadays would suggest that sending someone trusted to do the dirty job is far more sophisticated and strategically better move than spilling blood personally like a small ghetto fish

Fabrizio didn’t hide his longing to go to America, so I believed that he was the weakest link in Michael’s security. To me, Fabrizio was deeply envious of everything that Michael had: money, a beautiful young wife, a powerful family, etc. He coveted everything that Michael had.
As for Michael’s revenge for the death of Apollonia and their unborn child (in the book, she was pregnant when she died), he most likely would have wanted to settle that old debt with a personal touch).

There is a sort of pattern in The Godfather that betrayal is the smart thing to do. Fabrizio, who is somewhat clever, speaks some English etc. betrays. Calo, the other bodyguard, who is rather simple, does not. Tessio betrays later on and Michael comments that it is the smart move and Tessio was always smarter. Clemenza does not although the book has him thinking that it is better to stay put under pressure from the Five Families, unless the situation becomes intolerable.

Michael lost the vision of himself as the family rebel when he resigned to pulling the trigger on McClusky & Sollozo. But, his heart was truly broken at the loss of complete innocence in Appolonia's murder. After that, we don't really see much genuine emotion from him except toward his parents. Unlike his father who never lost his sentimentality, everything and everyone in Michael's world become pawns in a power game including Kay and his kids.

No matter how much he would have liked to have killed Fabrizio by his own hand, he would have known that doing so could have been perceived as a temperamental weakness in the same vein as Santino's temper. Fabrizio was already in love with Apollonia.
Enjoyed your vid. Your comments regarding Fab's jealousy made me think. I remembered the way Fabrizio paused when Michael said "instead of gaining a husband," but it wasn't I until I saw your take, that the penny dropped.
To me, that's when Fabrizio looks at him and thinks "You bastard. I've been in love with her for years. She's the only reason we were walking that way, and you just blow in......"
To compound this, Michael, who had been astutely meticulous with his decision making up to this point, had already stated "there are people who will pay a lot of money for that information," because he was thinking with his dick.
Then he makes a play for Apollonia, and Fab gives him that look.

There were a number of choices for the vendetta against Fabrizio, which had to happen. In the book, he is assassinated, shot dead. In the deleted scene in the film he is blown up in his car like Apollonia. And, there was a choice to shoot him via Michael's own hand using a lumpara--a symbolic weapon. The easiest choice to eliminate is the last one. Michael can not implicate himself with a personal murder. The assassin shooting Fabrizio is too removed. Instead, the choice was the car bomb with Michael in a vehicle nearby to witness the explosion and the death of Fabrizio. Honor would be satisfied and Apollonia revenged.

Under Don Vito's tutelage, Don Michael understood the larger mandate and viewed Fabrizio's fate as 'small-potatoes'. A mere housekeeping detail.

Interesting that the Families never used medieval torture for revenge, even against the murderer of a loved one. Michael's Plan A was to suffocate Hyman Roth in his sleep, Plan B was a bullet. Roth got a quick death. Paulie, Tessio and Fabrizio got quick deaths. Carlo suffered the worst death - Michael toyed with him, made him think he woud live, and then he was garrotted, but still not hacked to pieces or dropped inch by inch into boiling oil like in the Tudors. I guess it would have been hypocritical to take betrayal personally - they just got it over quickly. Did the Mafia have something like the Geneva Convention?

In a manner of speaking, yes. There is a code like you can't kill a "made man" without the permission of the commission(think Tommy killing Billy Bats in Goodfellas then getting wacked himself for doing so). And there are "sit downs" all the time. Watch the Soprano's, they touch on a lot of the so called "honor among thieves" when it comes to the mob.

I think in real life they did torture people, like they put a guys head in a vice once. But I don't know if those stories are corroborated by law enforcement

I read once (in real life) a low-ranking capo was tortured for days with a blowtorch for breaking omerta, so it depends what for, and how efficiently it needs to be done I guess. Lol.

Other stories about mobsters incorporate torture in their activities. Casino was one of them. Joe Pesche put some poor schmuck's head in a vise and popped his eye out! This was art imitating life(or I should say death in this case!)

I watched TG1 for the very first time yesterday. I just took the scenery in and didnt expect fabrizio to betray him until he was caught walking away. I guess him walking away just seconds before a big swerve became a movie trope.

I enjoy #1 and #2 beyond words, over many years. The story is rich with multiple layers and strong characters.
The actors are all better than excellent. But Brando and Pacino are at another level.
Barzini's killing in front of the church by disguised cops is perfect. The symbolism of church and state is part of Michael's brilliance. Now my problem. I can't watch # 3. I simply can't take from my mind Michael's ascension to the top and possibly going legit. That's where I want it to stay in my mind. I just want to keep imagining it.

Yep, and Pacino takes it to another level again in "Donnie Brasco," playing aging Bonnano wise guy "Lefty." Pacino brings grace and tragedy to the other side of the coin to the all-powerful Machiavellian Don Michael ion the "Godfathers."

We don't need no stinkin third Godfather." I've seen l & ll about thirty times. I watched about half of three (Long time ago) and walked away. It hurt every molecule of my body and saddened my mind. Like our brains do their best t o erase physical and or psychological traumas, from the mind, the "anti-trauma" section of my mind, has done a great job of erasing f #3 from my mind (thankfully). I NEVER think of about it or include it in ANY GF conversation. All I (sadly) recall is how bad Sofia was as an actor...Money makes people do dumb things all the time and FFC has put $ before brilliant filmmaking more than once-but this is the worst.

Michael would have wanted to extract revenge on Fabrizio personally. He would not have been satisfied with having someone else take care of him. Losing Apollonia was too much for him to have anyone else settle the score.

If Michael took out Fabrizio in a alternate Fabrizio death scene that should have been the first time Pacino says: "Say hello to my little friend." That should have been Pacino's catch phrase in all his movies.

I think a Sicilian would get vengeance for a murdered wife face to face. Fabrizio hand cuffed (both hands) to a steering wheel. He looks down on his lap. Dynamite bundle with a wire going out wing window. Michael is a few feet away from the car. Fabrizio starts begging, crying etc ..Michael tells him in Italian it's useless. He continues walking backward. At the corner Michael says "Good Bye". Stepping around the building he presses the trigger.
