  • In 2015 Abbie Barnes set out to walk around the Isle Of Wight on the coastal path route. They endured an epic solo adventure, with a bit of an unexpected ending. The walk though, was stunning, offering epic coastal views, petite fishing villages, glamorous campsites, and more!

5 years ago.. lovely walk and you brought back memories for me. 1962 I bicycled from Northampton to Lymington where I crossed to Yarmouth and made my way around the coast . staying at Youth Hostels. Great place to visit and I thank you for letting me go with you.

Or maybe have caught the 'bus from Shanklin along the spectacular south coast of the Island as far as Alum Bay (Change here for The Needles) and then walked back to Yarmouth along the more sheltered west coast? Perhaps it was a bit optimistic, hoping to walk around the entire coast that late in the year, when the days are short and the weather begins to deteriorate?

You certainly made the right and correct choice. I've walked the coastal path but in the opposite direction, turning right out of Yarmouth instead of left. A lovely film bringing back many many memories of a place that I know extremely well through both work and pleasure. Don't be too sad, you can always come back again. Many thanks for taking me along - I really enjoyed it

Hello Abbie, Thank you for your excellent video, well-presented, gentle voice, easy to listen to, no noisy background music. Please don't change your presenting style. My daughter lives in the Isle of Wight and I live in Ireland and it is lovely to be able to 'visit' like this when I can't visit in person. July 2020.

It's great to see the landscape around where you walk, that's offering a good impresson of the coastal path and its condition as well.
I'm from the Netherlands, planning to visit the IOW in springtime 2021, for a viewing of homes on the S. W. coast. I've spend much time in Devon UK during the last 4,5 years and had to return to The Netherlands due to the pandemic. I'm told that the landscape of the IOW is similar to the one of Devon. Foremost, it's my fondness of the sea, calling me to a space to live near the coast. I do like your spirit and happy vibes, thank you. Keep smiling, safe journey 😊

On a clear day, if you can manage the stiff climb from Blackgang Chine up to the "Pepperpot" - England's only medieval lighthouse - on top of St. Catherine's Down, expect a wonderful view which extends all the way to Weymouth in the west and to the Surrey Hills in the north-east!

Well done Abbie. Enjoyed watching that. Just come back from the island after walking some of the coastal path over two days. Myself and my brother walked from Brightstone to Yarmouth (14 miles), and then from Yarmouth to Cowes (17miles). It was very muddy when we were there, and it was interesting to see that clip when you were crossing that rutted muddy field heading towards Thorness Bay. My brother got stuck in the mud there and I had to help him out! All good fun though. Going back soon to do the rest,

Such a shame you didn't get to finish the path Abbie, for me the best part was yet to come. I am just back from doing the path, well last week, and the hardest part for me was the section Cowes to Culver. Once over Culver Cliff i felt a sense of freedom after all the RD walking. I too have a video up, it would be good if you could check it out. ATB Jim.

Looks a great place for walking with excellent scenery and nice places to walk. Good call hitting the pub for refreshment, long distance yomping can certainly catch up on you and fast too.........amazing what a 30 minute rest can do to pick you back up, and a tuna sarnie too :-)Yep, I think you made the right call to abandon the cliff walk too. The weather was foul and of course, dam dangerous when walking high-up on slippery rocks. Dissapointing at the time I know, especially when your mind is being torn two ways, but common sense should come before bravado, and you live to do the walk another day, albeit hopefully better weather. :-)ATB....great video!

Bad luck with the rain and wind but would love to see the Shanklin Ventnor Needles Yarmouth if you go back and do it. I completed the route last Thursday 10th September using a budget hotel in Ryde as a base and buses out to strategic locations to link up the circuit so was much lighter loaded and I had a light day in the middle in between four longer ones

You could/should have walked from your camp site at Lower Hyde along the disused railway line (aka the "Red Squirrel Trail") to Wroxall and from thence over St. Boniface Down (781 feet OD - highest point on the IoW) before dropping down to Ventnor. It would have saved a couple of miles (and maybe a couple of hours) on your marathon hike along the "Back of the Wight" to The Needles!

Don’t under estimate this walk ,my friend who has walked in the alps ,the Atlas Mountains ,the highlands of Scotland was defeated as well,we have some of the highest sun hours and some of the strongest wind speeds as well 109mph at the needles
From the point you retired would be the most technical all the way till blackgang .the weather one side of the island can seem quite benign but along the south coast where I live can blow yer knickers off,you made the right decision .

Still a good achievement. You had fun, made a smart decision and showed us how lovely that place is. Liked this a lot. Found you because of the review you did on that backpack and wondered what hiking through the UK would look like. It's a bit different from what I'm used to, hiking through nature reservations for days on end instead of mix of little towns and the countryside. It was nice, thanks :)
Btw. Did I understand straps correctly that came loose form the pack? How'd that happen?

Glad you enjoyed the film, and thank you for the comment. Yes the straps came lose, I think because they got so wet through there was just no friction to hold them in place. Keep hiking!

Yes I will :D I'v been looking into hammock campin lately after having used a tent for the last 7 years, because in Norway where often go because you can camp out in the wild, it's actually very hard to find a spot that's near water, reasonably level and dry all at the same time (whereas a watersource and trees come together without saying).
It's very different from tentcamping and it's been lovely to look into it. Can't wait for that next hike with some of the new goodies. Ones I know which ones to use that is, so much new stuff to learn about :D

I love your walks. Speech is a bit unclear for me (but I'm old and deaf). Thhink I might follow you on this walk - a bit slower, might take seven days.

Great video. Looks like you did make the right decision and not risk it.
Can i ask, do you always walk in the direction the traffic is going? I used to, put there is a danger of not knowing who is coming up behind you, and how close they are going to get to you. But then walking towards the traffic can be pretty dangerous as well. Especially on blind bends and they can't see you are there..

Hiya, yes you should always walk towards traffic, unless there is a sharp corner, then cross over to pass it. :)

@@AbbieBarnesWILD :-) I'm just starting to look at camping kit and start with basics. I agree with your other advice, about start off do small walks locally. I think will buy some treking poles to help take pressure off chronic knee pain. Hope you're well. :-)

I really love your video. You must come back and continue your journey some day! Have you ever heard of "Walk The Wight"? It's a charity walking event helping to raise money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. I hope to walk it again this year - you'd love it! Thanks for uploading this. Great job! :-)

    Hey Abbie, hope youre ok.
Im planning on hiking the IOW coast next week (hence my research!)....just wondering if you could offer any advice? Do you think its actually possible to walk the entire island on the beach, rather than follow the path? Haha...just something id considered to enhance the trip! Any tips will be most welcome.

There are quite a lot of areas that are cliffs rather than beaches. There are also 2 areas (I think) that are privately owned so you have to walk along the roads for those sections.

Shame about your rucksack breaking, I carry a Crux AK 47 when I go long distance. The thing is pretty much indestructible. As for the island, its not going anywhere.
