Yes, yes....player aids more, always, yes... I play so many wonderful games and I have a good idea of what to do each round or phase, but not exactly. Good to be vocal about this.
So glad this wasn't a review copy for me as still haven't had a chance to learn it yet, let alone play it. I can come to this on my own time. However the lack of player aids and a bad rulebook are a major negative worry as once you inevitably put this down and leave it for a while, you will struggle to pick it up again.
For more complex games, I would agree! This is one that I think I actually will remember a lot of if we play it in a year! Might be my crazy brain, but it’s not different from most other games in that way! :)

Thanks for the review. I received the all-in pledge yesterday and sleeved it all up to begin with. I have yet to dive into the rules, which I gather will feel like a chore since it's an Awaken Realms game. Glad to hear that once you do know the rules it plays smooth, since I'm the guy in our game group who learns and then teaches the games it should be fine once I get it all down. Curious to see how the game and it's different 'modes' will play, mainly what will differ between the 'regular' and the 'cooperative' game mode.

When we play coops and story games, I do look for the theme, but in most Euro games, I almost don’t recognize that it’s there! I’ll try to be a bit better, especially with games that has a different theme, like this one! :)
I can sadly with 97% certainty say we won’t have time for that 😢 Still a big pile of games to get through, and with Spiel happening next week, our play schedule wilø be full until the beginning of next year! Yeah, that is completely true! We usually don’t do s lot of expansions anyways, because we play so many new games, but we try to cover a few expansions here and there! :)
Each player gets their own mini rulebook in Lisboa, just sayin’. I passed on this when it was on KS because it was so expensive and seemed needlessly overproduced. Does all of the “chrome” really add much to the game experience?
I have just two games of The Great Wall under my belt, so take this comment with a grain of salt, but the one thing I really really dislike about it (and this goes for basically every single game where it happens) is the importance of timing and turn order and the fact that it requires workers to adjust. In games like Brass, timing is also important, but the shifting turn order works much more elegantly; you have a big turn this round, so next round you'll be last. In Great Wall, where you already have precious few actions on a given round, you need to spend two workers to get first spot and especially if you're starting as 4th player you need to get yourself in a position where you don't get screwed out of getting horde cards or wall points, which then pushes the new 4th player to do the same, etc etc etc. The game for turn order position is such a boring waste of resources, but since the turn order is so important, you need to participate in it. Personally, i am usually quite good at timing, which means that I've ended up stealing virtually every horde card in the games I've played and that just creates a bad mood around the table. The lack of a playeraid is also frustrating, especially since the printing on the player screen is more confusing than helping for quite a few of the action cards. We have been passing around the cards for the 5th player colour so people could keep track of the abilities in the player row. So far, it's a 6/10 for me, but I still need to try it at more player counts

The decision to put the information about the command cards so front on centre on the player screen is so baffling. As you say, you have all the information on the cards. It really should be a round overview, and then reminders for things like horde card scoring, as that is easy to get wrong.

That rulebook needs to be burned, god its so bad. Solo mode is also too much fath to micro manage and way too difficult. Definitely best multiplayer up to 3 players max.

Yeah, this is a pet peeve for me! I really wish more publishers made good player aids with round structures and actions (if needed) for all players!

I hope they will fix the rulebook with the language versions. Well, for sure Vanguard will be great because Paul Grogan helps with the rulebook.

The theme here is greatly implemented, if you are a theme person, but for me, the mechanisms win every time, and they sre very good in this one!
I totally agree. If only this was a Romans defending the Rhine or Danube frontier game…
