It is possible that the enemy is "simply" made up of two separately animated characters that communicate the correct animation to each other. In that case, it would still be very difficult to keep them perfectly attached, and the nightmare would be more in the double planning of the two bodies. Without a doubt, a nightmare anyway. (A real nightmare in animation is Rykard; that boss has so many parts that you can hardly separate them)

It looks like just two dudes in a costume working together, but the fact that the old lady calls the Divine Beast to come to life suggests there's something else infused within it to allow the pair to move around so seamlessly and use various elemental attacks and spells. Also, kudos to Fromsoft for taking something relatively colourful and joyful and turning it into something so unsettling and uncanny. Also nice detail that you can literally see the hands of the front guy literally working the mouth to go.
This combined with the Hornsent Grandam's reaction to you donning the Devine Beast Helm implies that the Devine Beast is actually more of an Outer (or maybe in this case "Native") God of the Lands Between that the people of Beluraut channeled through worship than an actual giant monster. Its a lion dancer. During one of its moves you can see these guys stacked on one another. Saw this in the trailer and thats how i knew it was in fact two dudes!
In traditional lion dance the dude at the back is suppose to hold on the waist of the dude in front, it would be cool if they really stitch those two together like some human centipede but the design here probably needed some length to look more intimidating
Actually, some younger and newer lion dancers incorporate front legs and back legs interaction, like standing on each other in their routines. Its not common, but do exist, and its pretty badass to see in person.
Where I live, thats honestly pretty standard, not standing on their heads but sitting on it while they plant their feet on the back dude's shoulders, while the back dude grabs on to front dude's legs to keep balance. I've been the back dude on multiple occasions and I've failed miserably as the front dude once, its really fucking hard
Designs like this show why Fromsoft's artists are unrivaled. So much world building while also being extremely unique and thematically fitting. It'd be so much easier to have an actual lion boss but Fromsoft always brings their A-game.
Honestly this just makes the boss so much cooler: the spirit isn't even manifested, it's just two extremely drift compatible dudes channelling it at once. Gorgeous thing.
I usually find it frustrating how there is always someone who complains about the camera in seemingly ever souls game boss, but yeah sometimes I literally just could not see what was going on especially during the lightning part
So far, legitimately my ONLY complaint about the DLC is I've found one to many bosses with conspicuously high lock on targets and moves that keep them right above you. Was the camera in Bloodborne more behaved or is it just the higher mobility making it less of a problem there?

It was actually quite funny recognising some of the moves from real life lion dances I’ve seen. Of course not the flying off the ground with lightning and storms and shit; but the jumping on the back guy’s shoulders to spin around, as well as how the back guy has to fling himself to ‘turn’ the beast.
Never have I imagined a barongsai, which is usually depicted as having friendly features and bright colours. Be reimagined as something so otherworldy. Really fantastic work by the design team.

It was more Balinese Mytology of Barong a lion like creature who was King of The Spirit. Not Chinese Barongsai. Word Barong was originaly from Balinese language not Malay or Berurat. Barong mean / Lion or Singa / Tiger.
The guy in the back usually holds on to the guy in the front for a traditional lion dance, it makes all of their actions kind of goofy now in hindsight that it’s just the bottom guy struggling to run around and keep up rather than being attached to the “Head”
From my understanding, the Beast it´self is bodiless, the Costume is it´s Medium and the two Men underneath are more or less hollows, performers who are selected to serve as host to the Divine Beast when the Tower Folk summon it originally meant as a ritualistic performance but when Marikas people came repurposed into a weapon

my mother was at one point a 'chinese lion tamer,' in that there'd be two people operating the chinese lion, one at the back representing the hind legs, and the front holding up the big lion head and i love that Fromsoft mimicked that kind of concept here.
Here's hoping that they develop advanced techniques like dynamically zooming out the camera for big bosses by the time their next game comes out. Getting squished up against a wall and watching a half-transparent mountain of cloth-covered flesh dance and cavort violently until you're dead is not the most fun experience.

The most stupid thing is that it's already in game. You can just...toggle it on, and it does for SOME encounters. But not even remotely nearly enough. A modder can do it in like two clicks, this is stupid.

@@Sleepy12ftPanda As far as I'm aware, we don't know much about the Hornsent religion (or Hornsent in general). Going off the Enraged Divine Beast talisman, the actual divine beasts they believe in are messengers of the heavens and we know the giant gate of corpses at the top of the tower is connected to the divine, but outside of that we don't know too much. I'd go as far as to say it's possible their religion was connected to the Greater Will, given their ties to the Crucible and use of golden incantations. But I need way more info and context to state that for sure. As for their persecution, there seems to be two main reasons. One is that, similar to the Fire Giants, they were a threat to the Golden Order. Two, on a personal level, I imagine Marika must've hated them. They're the reason her home village is empty, if I remember right all her people were put into the jars around the Realm of Shadow and tortured. In other words, before she had them prosecuted, they prosecuted her people. It also may be the reason the Crucible grew to be shunned as the Golden Order progressed.
Easily one of my favorite bosses, in anything. Just so creative and intimidating, and the music, my lord. It took me two hours and a half horlyrs to best him. But it was worth it.

This boss is up there with some of the best FromSoft ever designed. Taken from a simple idea, but imagine how much work it took to make it into what we see in the game.
The mesh quality on the knees and leg muscles brings me joy. Small touch but good dedication to the silhouette of the character. The FromSoft art team has been able to deliver some really outstanding work, both in the final product, and the ingenuity of their production pipelines.

I'm still amazed that despite being a From Software game, the boss were actually 2 Elite, Hornsent Divine Beast warriors instead of some kind of centipede humanoid creature.
I have a theory about the Dancing Lion being actually two guys in a costume. I believe the Lion is actually a god manifesting through the costume. The two guys are servants in a trance, possessed by the god who was summoned. As for what summoned the god, I believe it is us entering the arena. The priestess basically keep repeating her chants all the time, but the god never answered until we, a Tarnished affiliated with the Golden Order, arrived. It makes sense given the history of those people with Messmer, who was affiliated with Marika as well.
These two dudes were conjuring storms, entire seasonal changes in the arena, jumping, spinning, dancing, twirling, the whole set …and still they maintained that posture, that’s dedication right there
Damn... with the trailers for the base game, having Godrick hold up a hand and many other hands coming to out of the shadows, you would have thought grafting would be something that appeared on more than just two enemies.... what a shame XD

I was dealing really small amount of damage and some attacks dealt almost 70% of my health ( i had 48 vigor btw) That being said this was a really fun boss too learn and i hope i there will be more bosses like this in this DLC.
@@JohnDoe-ligma I was level 4 and I barely could deal damage with 80 str ultra greatsword, moreover it's so hard to find openings in this fight and boss itself spams too many AoEs in second phase. I gave up after three tries and just summoned Tiche lol. That said, "optional" bosses and dungeon bosses are pretty easy to beat

I believe that this form of lion dance is the inspiration for the production team, possibly originating from the traditional lion dance of northern Japan, or at least not from the cute, elaborate, and friendly Southern Chinese lion dance.

Word Barong was originaly from Balinese language not Malay or Berurat. Barong mean / Lion or Singa / Tiger.
The guy in the back usually holds on to the guy in the front for a traditional lion dance, it makes all of their actions kind of goofy now in hindsight that it’s just the bottom guy struggling to run around and keep up rather than being attached to the “Head”

From my understanding, the Beast it´self is bodiless, the Costume is it´s Medium and the two Men underneath are more or less hollows, performers who are selected to serve as host to the Divine Beast when the Tower Folk summon it

@@kiddcamel Well not in the exact wording, but I think the remembrance descryption speaks of the Ritual were the Lion would dance, which was converted into a weapon when the House of the Erdtree attacked, furthermore, the old woman who keeps calling Marika a strumpet and who´s prayers seem to invite the spirit of the Beast into the Costume will be overjoyed if you visit her while wearing the costume, asking if a sculpted guardian of the tower stands before her, so the beast may yet enact the cleansing she so desires

@@umukzusgelos4834 Yeah I'm sure the "sculpted" part refers to the puppeteers undergoing some rigorous physical and realigious/ritual training to become vessels for the spirit of the beast, or at least the magical energy that they channel with the dance.
my mother was at one point a 'chinese lion tamer,' in that there'd be two people operating the chinese lion, one at the back representing the hind legs, and the front holding up the big lion head and i love that Fromsoft mimicked that kind of concept here.

Here's hoping that they develop advanced techniques like dynamically zooming out the camera for big bosses by the time their next game comes out. Getting squished up against a wall and watching a half-transparent mountain of cloth-covered flesh dance and cavort violently until you're dead is not the most fun experience.
This such a massive issue throughout the game. Dragons, Fire Giant, Trolls, the fire wicker guy in the dlc etc
@@Black_JCD It reminds me of playing PSO2 NGS, which at least had the camera zoom out when fighting massive bosses, but even in that game in normal gameplay they wouldn't let you zoom out the view.
The most stupid thing is that it's already in game. You can just...toggle it on, and it does for SOME encounters. But not even remotely nearly enough. A modder can do it in like two clicks, this is stupid.

I have to say, probably the greatest Boss design I've ever seen. Given what we know of, not just the lore, but the cultural inspirations, this boss just makes everything click for me, it just belongs here; Masterpiece
Best design in the whole game, not just dlc. Uncanny is an understatement, horrifying visual. Reminds me of Guardian Ape from Sekiro.
I love the way Elden Ring manages to make cool designs using bizarre out-of-place elements, like Radahn being on a tiny horse or Messmer's limbs being just a little too long (as well as having a snake through his body). I wish we got more of this.

@@Sleepy12ftPanda As far as I'm aware, we don't know much about the Hornsent religion (or Hornsent in general). Going off the Enraged Divine Beast talisman, the actual divine beasts they believe in are messengers of the heavens and we know the giant gate of corpses at the top of the tower is connected to the divine, but outside of that we don't know too much. I'd go as far as to say it's possible their religion was connected to the Greater Will, given their ties to the Crucible and use of golden incantations. But I need way more info and context to state that for sure.
As for their persecution, there seems to be two main reasons. One is that, similar to the Fire Giants, they were a threat to the Golden Order. Two, on a personal level, I imagine Marika must've hated them. They're the reason her home village is empty, if I remember right all her people were put into the jars around the Realm of Shadow and tortured. In other words, before she had them prosecuted, they prosecuted her people. It also may be the reason the Crucible grew to be shunned as the Golden Order progressed.
This is practically how Chinese lion dances are in irl too. They're a fun Chinese new year event.

Given the ones puppeteering the lion suit are called "sculpted keepers," I think it's safe to assume they're some sort of golems. And that said golems would (like happens in the boss fight) be possessed by a divine spirit of some sort.

This boss is up there with some of the best FromSoft ever designed. Taken from a simple idea, but imagine how much work it took to make it into what we see in the game.
The mesh quality on the knees and leg muscles brings me joy. Small touch but good dedication to the silhouette of the character.
The FromSoft art team has been able to deliver some really outstanding work, both in the final product, and the ingenuity of their production pipelines.

I have a theory about the Dancing Lion being actually two guys in a costume. I believe the Lion is actually a god manifesting through the costume. The two guys are servants in a trance, possessed by the god who was summoned. As for what summoned the god, I believe it is us entering the arena. The priestess basically keep repeating her chants all the time, but the god never answered until we, a Tarnished affiliated with the Golden Order, arrived. It makes sense given the history of those people with Messmer, who was affiliated with Marika as well.
These two dudes were conjuring storms, entire seasonal changes in the arena, jumping, spinning, dancing, twirling, the whole set
…and still they maintained that posture, that’s dedication right there

I was dealing really small amount of damage and some attacks dealt almost 70% of my health ( i had 48 vigor btw)
That being said this was a really fun boss too learn and i hope i there will be more bosses like this in this DLC.
@Andzei9825 maybe. Make sure to grab those dlc upgrades. I was lv 4 so maybe that helped?
@@JohnDoe-ligma I was level 4 and I barely could deal damage with 80 str ultra greatsword, moreover it's so hard to find openings in this fight and boss itself spams too many AoEs in second phase. I gave up after three tries and just summoned Tiche lol. That said, "optional" bosses and dungeon bosses are pretty easy to beat

When I entered the boss room I was scared because this was the ONLY boss I did not wanna encounter early especially first when I saw the trailer. The two rows of teeth and eyes creep me out. Especially the mane that makes it look less lion and more human in this case since its in its face😭😭
