  • Keiko Hirosue of Brooklyn Shoe Space demonstrates one way of how to tape up a last. Hear and see some helpful tips and murmurs. The objective is to tape the surface of the last so you can take the 3D of the last onto a 2D pattern paper later.

TOOLS THAT YOU USE IN THE VIDEO:
    1: Lasts
Find a last that you wish to use for your project.

    2: Shoemakers Tape
One side has inches and cm, and the other side has the English shoe sizes and stitch sizes. 60cm long.

    3: Masking Tape
3M is ok too, but I prefer these from Ideal Tape

    4: box cutter
I like the Olfa box cutter that allows you to clip off the blade when it gets dull.

5: pen, pencil, eraser is self explanatory, even though of course we have our favorite brands... a cutting mat,
    And last but not least,
    6: Ruler
We love the Muji clear one with the metal edges but they only sell them in Japan. We import them and have them in class. But otherwise we use the clear cm or inch ones, and make sure there’s a metal edge so we can use blades against it without cutting into the ruler.

When I made the video it was right after we hosted Marcell Mrsan’s pattern class and his method of taping was fresh in my mind... sorry it’s awkward mentioning him so frequently.
He’s a very talented shoemaker in case you don’t know him:

you start by masking the inside first and then the outside. Also you start by masking the top line first.
