People are good for destroying things. You can mostly blame a poor upbringing, having parents that either weren't around or should've never had kids because they themselves are no good, or just failed to teach their kids to respect the environment and preserve it for future generations.
I agree with you wholeheartedly! But also you can bring your kids up well, but when they have influential people in their lives (like the scout master) who not only don't teach them to respect the planet but actively encourage them to destroy it there's no hope! All you can do is try to make sure your kids learn to teach by example and that just because others encourage them to do the wrong thing, it's them who has to look at themselves in the mirror each day.

@@curlyken01 You're right in that the movie made people aware of Maya Bay (on Phi Phi Leh), but it's actually the rising popularity of the nearby island of Koh Phi Phi Don that's brought people to that part of Thailand. That island is larger and now has many hotels, I don't think there are any hotels on Phi Phi Leh. People go there to party, but it's a very nice island, which is why I extended my stay there. It would be natural to see Maya Bay because boat trips take you on a tour of the islands in that area. Bamboo Island was equally full of people. It was the Chinese who were there in huge numbers, and they didn't care to throw their litter on the beach.

I haven’t been this angry in a while! I grow up going into the wilderness with my family, we were taught strict rules and respect for nature. We always left the place as we found it (and sometimes cleaner if we found trash). You carry out what you bring in, bodily functions as well, I would never even consider pooping on top of a rock or in pools of water! Even as a teenager. My cousins and I often wanted to go climb things that had signs telling people to stay out, we never did though, we knew why the signs were there, to protect the beauty and wonder of what we were seeing. It simply respect and common sense.
I now live in Philippines. The President here closed down Borocay island for 6 months. It was having 40000 guests a week and taking in 1.4 billion peso in local money. He told them to fix the issues of sewerage and rubbish disposal or he would close them down. He gave them a month. They laughed at him. One month later he sent in police and army to close the airport and stop people going to the island. He also removed current visitors. Since then the island has been rehabilitated and has recently reopened. It shows that if we speak enough about a problem someone will listen. I live in Alona Beach Panglao and he has threatened the same here. I hope he does it!

Maya Bay is undergoing restoration by an organization called Ocean Quest which I'm proud to be one of the trainers there. Just 3 months into closure, we've seen hundreds of black top reef sharks coming back to the bay. It's safe to say, it's on it's way back to life. :)

The economy is screwed because since everyone loves Hawaii so much they decided to live here and then that makes it harder for locals to get reasonable homes and makes the island more crowded, along with having to build on the mountains. People are good for destroying things. You can mostly blame a poor upbringing, having parents that either weren't around or should've never had kids because they themselves are no good, or just failed to teach their kids to respect the environment and preserve it for future generations.

But also you can bring your kids up well, but when they have influential people in their lives (like the scout master) who not only don't teach them to respect the planet but actively encourage them to destroy it there's no hope! All you can do is try to make sure your kids learn to teach by example and that just because others encourage them to do the wrong thing, it's them who has to look at themselves in the mirror each day.

That island is larger and now has many hotels, I don't think there are any hotels on Phi Phi Leh. People go there to party, but it's a very nice island, which is why I extended my stay there. It would be natural to see Maya Bay because boat trips take you on a tour of the islands in that area. Bamboo Island was equally full of people. It was the Chinese who were there in huge numbers, and they didn't care to throw their litter on the beach.

I haven’t been this angry in a while! I grow up going into the wilderness with my family, we were taught strict rules and respect for nature. We always left the place as we found it (and sometimes cleaner if we found trash). You carry out what you bring in, bodily functions as well, I would never even consider pooping on top of a rock or in pools of water! Even as a teenager. My cousins and I often wanted to go climb things that had signs telling people to stay out, we never did though, we knew why the signs were there, to protect the beauty and wonder of what we were seeing. It simply respect and common sense.

I now live in Philippines. The President here closed down Borocay island for 6 months. It was having 40000 guests a week and taking in 1.4 billion peso in local money. He told them to fix the issues of sewerage and rubbish disposal or he would close them down. He gave them a month. They laughed at him. One month later he sent in police and army to close the airport and stop people going to the island. He also removed current visitors. Since then the island has been rehabilitated and has recently reopened. It shows that if we speak enough about a problem someone will listen. I live in Alona Beach Panglao and he has threatened the same here. I hope he does it!

Maya Bay is undergoing restoration by an organization called Ocean Quest which I'm proud to be one of the trainers there. Just 3 months into closure, we've seen hundreds of black top reef sharks coming back to the bay. It's safe to say, it's on it's way back to life. :)

The economy is screwed because since everyone loves Hawaii so much they decided to live here and then that makes it harder for locals to get reasonable homes and makes the island more crowded, along with having to build on the mountains. Now once public hikes are now private or impossible to get to because it was either ruined by tourist, built over with houses, or it was destroyed from the climate and abuse.
