- Sprocket finally released! So naturally, I decided to subject myself to unbearable pain and suffering in the name of tankery science to beat the first level of this game.

If it makes you feel better when the Mk V was first deployed weren't there like 60 sent in and only 9 actually made it to the fight, pretty sure the rest got stuck.
I'm not sure, 60 were at Hamel, but I though I remembered a bettle were 32 were sent in, but all but 9 got stuck in mud and had engine trouble.

Science
It's typical for the game that applies traction on the roadwheels and not on the tracks themselves. If you're going straight then your first pair of roadwheels will stuck on the wall of the trench, but if you're going at a slight angle you can put one of your roadwheels further compared to going straight.
I like how the hardest mission by far is the first one

I like how the design started out as a light tank and pretty much ended as a heavy tank
The first time you clear No Tanks Land (at least in the unpatched release version) is just such a uniquely euphoric experience in gaming. And the design you complete it with … just, so proud. I did it with a tiny 1-man, 6 ton TD with the maximum sized engine. Took the Russian approach (we have reserves) and threw myself across the trenches at 20mph- in the end I actually made it all the way in just one of them. Having stayed up till 3am three nights running to do it. I may have shed a tear. To honour my successful design I then proceeded to complete every other scenario with them (subject to retrofits). I have never gone near No Tanks Land again. We are done. That is a thing that I needed to do and I did. No looking back.
Yeah I only finally managed to achieve it last month. That's January 2023. I've been playing this game off and on since release. No Tank's Land is torture. The tank I beat it with fucking rocks tho
I was able to beat No Tanks Land by making a self propelled gun in which I sat in spawn and lobbed shells wherever I saw enemy artillery shells being fired from. (The tank was a massive box filled with ammo (and a 250mm gun (it took my like 30-60mins to beat the level)))
Is no one going to talk about that arty shell bouncing off the other tank at 19:07 ?

Hats off to the brave crewmen that were killed trying to drive various tank monstrosities over the trench.
You are more persistent than I am when I tried the first mission. But it did teach us more about having a cool looking tank.

I'm still struggling away with that scenario.
The moment when I finally got a tank that didn't slide all over the place (some of the time), managed to get over the trenches and knock out most of the AT guns, only for the enemy tanks to spawn in and blow me away had me take a break for a couple of days.
Edit: Nice to know it's apparently a little easier now, time to get back at it.
Keep at it my friend, the finish line is within your sight if you got as far as the tanks. And the accomplishment of beating that level will make it all worth it
Fuel barrels act like ERA they absorbed the first shot. And you can stack multiple on each other. Which can allow lighter protected builds.
also a Panzer III style design works.
The final tank looks like mix of a t34 from the side and rear, a panzer 4/Sherman from the front, with a 2 man t26 turret.
This was by far the best game play video I have seen so far. Not just random design that make no sense, not just random showcasing, this was actual tank development with a shit ton of passion.

I just subscribed because of this video. The stages of insanity you went through to complete this mission is something I've had before. It's only a thing in creative games too. For some reason the need to design something to overcome a obstacle just pushes you all the harder. Really makes you appreciate the inventors that came before us.

@@perezpayeet845 the secret is to have a long tank. I personally didn’t want to have a pencil tank design, just for looks, and tried to focus on small and light, more comparable to an FT-17. So I kept with short and stout, and even once I added length, I was too conservative with how long I made it; afraid of going too far.
Phly did not care at all and just made whatever worked, props to him for getting it quicker than me but he definitely ended the video on an incomplete mission.

I like your humor, it got me several times
I find it odd that, out of all the games out there that I've played, the one that simulates tank tracks the most realistically is Besiege, a game about building medieval siege engines. The tractor style treads they build in that game work better than most games that base their gameplay around tanks.

For crossing trench u need tail and longer tank. TOG II
For no tanks land I found that the tracks need to be as small as possible the sprockets should be small about 0.3-0.65m in diameter the vehicle obviously needs to be light.
The gun should be whatever you want 20mm and 84 both work.
And lastly form over function.
Edit I meant that the tracks need to be small in width not in length.
My take for this scenario was just to make a very long boi and it worked XD i crossed the trenches easily but i had serious issue with the power

That must be hard level to go, when I got the game, I went through 4 or 5 attempts (or more) that I go through and it is hard to go through the trench but I did beat it (will my other tanks didn’t make it through and some died from artillery others got stuck in the holes and I’m the only one tank that survive everything at one and it was hard to survive, also I like this video)

I think I know why you couldn't cross trenches and tanks were unwieldy: the tracks in game are only visual. I've noticed the same problem moving through obstacles on the tank I've built in gmod

I love Sprocket and tanks, and it's nice to see how far the development has come now. But I have a question; you put "*floof approved*" at various points in the video, what does it mean? (I"m almost thinking of a certain tank anime character...)

Tbh, I expected you to start off with designed based on tanks that were developed to "fight previous war" aka T-35, Independent, Char 2C, TOG II, Grosstractor, Neuebaufahrzeug. Combine their features, then downscale resulting vehicle by difference between Char 2C and Char 1A. Basically you would get a weird mix of LVT-5 and M113, but with long 75mm gun with 37mm coaxial and several extra MGs in casemate mounting and single secondary turret with either HMG or another 37mm gun and with enough elevation to fire at planes and upper floors. Maybe lower the track akin to TOG II since by that time people figured that running it all round the whole hull was pointless.
The issue with that is that multi turrets were not implemented yet.
You should write a book about this inspirational experience, you can call it "my struggle". I don't know if that title screams tanks, perhaps in German?
