    I am a Greek Chantor. I"ve never learned the Byzantine notation, and pretty much learned everything by wrote throughout the past 30 years. I have been yearning for many years to learn this notation, and I found it incredible that after 1 hour of a video that we were singing Soson Kyrie in an hour. It really is a reward for the student to hear the Ison and the melody and words in such a short time. Thanks for these videos. I'm going to study these a good while and hopefully I can really grasp this notation system. Thanks again for these videos.

    Thank you so very much Nicholas!! I was Chrismated on Pentecost Saturday June 6th 2020. I've been at my Parish for 2 years now. I"m a musician and began singing in the choir two Sundays ago BUT began helping out with chanting last Wednesday at Vespers. I thank God I found your page and I thank God He put it on your heart to put your Lectures online. I've learned so much from just this 1 hour video it truly blessed me! I look forward to completing the 10week course with you and can't wait to serve Our God and help all the more our Parish in Prayer and Adoration through chanting! Amen!!
    The Lord Bless and Keep and Preserve you and your family and May the Power of Christ bless and strengthen you in all that you do, in The Name of The Father and The Son and The Holy Spirit, Amen!!

    Dear sir, thank you very much for your work! I am so happy to start learning this. Is there a way to get the PDF too? I would never suggest that someday an American will be teaching me Eastern Orthodox singing (I am from Bulgaria). Thank you 🙏🏻

    Hello Nicholas! You've done a very good job with these byzantin classes of musics. Good bless you. Can you sing in romanian languages if you see a romanian song with byzantin notes? Bogdan from Romania!

    So far this seems easier than western notion

    • @metamanks
      @metamanks  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’ve found the same. It was quicker for me to pick it up and become more fluent in reading Byzantine notation, I think. (Maybe because it’s symbolic and pattern-based?)

    Does this require having a background in western music?
    Also I just want to say, 15 minutes in and this is already amazing.
    May Panagia keep and protect you and bless you work ☦️

    • @metamanks
      @metamanks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This shouldn’t require a background in Western music, although I do sometimes make analogies with Western music, to help speed up learning for those who are familiar. I’m so glad it’s been useful!

    Is it possible to get a version of this class without the other people in it? This way, we might also be able to go faster.

      That’s a great idea! I’ll put it on my task list! I could either re-record in a streamlined way, or just clip the video up leaving only the essentials.

    I am Roman Catholic and I went to vespers with a friend at a Ukranian Catholic Church. I was interested in learning more about the form of their chant. Is this the same do you think?

    • @EstebanAcosta801
      @EstebanAcosta801 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      UGCC is Byzantine rite (Liturgy of John Chrysostom), though I've heard they're one of the most westernized churches. At least in the US, many of those Greek-Catholic churches (even some Orthodox) have absorbed things like pews and organs. We don't have many Eastern Catholic parishes where I live, but the Orthodox churches I've been to always do Orthros in Byzantine chant, with a mix of this and SATB music during Divine Liturgy.

    • @metamanks
      @metamanks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry for the late reply, Amber! This type of chant fits more into the churches that follow Byzantine Music, rather than Slavic Music. The Ukrainian Catholic Church most likely follows Slavic music. Melkite Churches often use Byzantine Music, though. Ethnically, this type of music is found in Greece, the Middle East, Romania (sometimes), Serbia (sometimes), etc.

      Sorry for never responding here! I just noticed it. I put most of the materials on the screen, and was hoping to setup a website address just for these materials. If I do, I'll try to post it here.

    I am an Orthodox viewer from another town, is there a place I can go to access a copy of your documents? I see that you're using a particular spreadsheet for the exercises. I have the archdiocese's book (spiral bound), but your sheet seems slightly different, and this book doesn't have whatever tabs you referred to in the beginning.

    • @metamanks
      @metamanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching! I will be using different materials than the Greek Archdiocese book, although that book is quite colorful! :o) I will be writing a webpage on byzantinechant.org/streaming.html soon with the syllabus and downloadable materials (although I try to display what I can on the screen). Check back at some point before next Thursday's class. The tabs are just a part of the binders I made, which will correspond with each week of the class.

      Thank you for the response! I will keep an eye out for that, and I'll do my best to keep up! Even just the first lesson has cleared things up which have confused me before, especially through the ni-pa-vou and the la-la-a's.
      I'm entirely confident about the quality of your teaching, but since there is a lack of teachers of Byzantine chant near me, I do need the Orthodox background and qualitative character of the different parts whenever that arises, such as the martyrs/"martiries" and the fluttering, but I'm sure your lessons will not lack anything. I just thought I'd mention my particular interest in that.
