Long story short the first "ribbed" condom was made by the"Lifestyles" brand in 1972.
As someone that isn't a gun guy I have no clue how I stumbled upon these videos. I'm also not what you'd consider a big fan of guns but I see their usefulness in certain situations, however this man's professionalism and respect for these machines is astounding. There's no machismo, or over the top commentary about how everyone should carry, just straight facts and really scientific testing. I'm probably the last person to ever own a gun, but god damn if these videos aren't entertaining, but most importantly, educational.
That's exactly why the SPAS-12 was both pump and semi-auto: semi-auto mode was for standard slugs and buckshot, pump-action mode for things like sub-lethal and teargas rounds.
Your channel would explode if there were more uploads. I'm not complaining, I love your videos, I'm just saying that you would likely have millions of views and millions of subs. You would likely have companies begging to sponsor your videos, which I think you should do. If anyone deserves to make it on this platform it is Paul Harrell.
So, did you use less than lethal force? Well, sir, those fancy beanbags and stuff are law enforcement only in this state, so I did the next best thing. I shot the intruder with .410 birdshot.
Although I bought some one time out of curiosity, I see no need for civilians to have less-than-lethal shotgun ammo. If it's not a lethal force situation, perhaps you ought not shoot them. But If you have to shoot someone, the situation is serious.... and your ammo should be serious also. Just my opinion.
You could use them on wild life.... perhaps bears in trash cans and such. The noise and perhaps the pain might make them reconsider the free food. Might also be less issues with the game warden.. Could be more issues though, check your local laws.
In any other scenario other than riot control, a firearm should be used with the express purpose to kill. You should never shoot at someone unless you are justifiably concerned for your life.
I thought about Less Lethal or Less Than Lethal for my HD rounds. I gave it a minute before I clicked "add to cart," Winchester Deer Slugs won the debate in my mind and I already had a bunch of boxes of it too so....
@Max William Lauf yeah, road flares work very, very good. However I'll bet those rangers had snow mobiles to outrun and frustrate the polar bears. My Uncle Les, an uncle by marriage, told me a story about the "less than lethal" loads my Granddad Bob used to use on him and his friends. You see, my mother was one of three sisters, all of them living dolls when they were young. So the high school boys, including my future uncle, liked to figure out ways to harass them. One favorite was to stand outside the girls' bedroom windows, and throw chaff onto the roof above it. The object of the exercise was to get Granddad Bob to sally forth from the backyard with his double barrel shotgun loaded with rock salt. I asked my uncle, "So did he ever hit you?" He said, "I don't remember, but if he did, it didn't feel like much. We were fast runners." This was before World War 2. During that conflict, Uncle Les toured France with the U.S. Army in a mobile howitzer, blowing up German pillboxes. After which he married my mother's oldest sister, with whom he had -- get this -- five daughters. Talk about karma. R.I.P. Uncle Les. He was one of the greats.
Seven other Morons have now followed suit , their brains have probably been scrambled so badly by the extreme weather lately , that they now resemble the Orange lung tissue after they had been hit with the Lead Foster Slug and their functions impaired accordingly .
That last point you made was a really good one. It doesn't make sense to use 'less (than) lethal' ammo out of a shotgun, when you can get equivalent performance out of a paintball gun loaded with heavy rubber or breaker balls. And with a paintball gun, you have a couple hundred rounds in the hopper and it can be fully auto. That's far and away a better choice than a pump shotgun with rubber slugs.
Not just dispersing crowds but for blinding them and permanently marking them as trouble makers. When 4 people show up to plan the protest missing an eye from the last protest it tends to discourage the new recruits.

You know what Paul, when I bought some less than leathal rounds the guy specifically asked what style shotgun I was using. Citing that he knows for a fact there isnt enough pow to cycle the action of a auto loading shotgun. Partially BC the amount of pow it takes to cycle the action causes the round to do unintended damage, or it damages the round itself on the way down the barrel. Love your videos

Thanks Paul. I just bought some Lightfield here in Australia (here the box reads "wildlife control ammunition") in the rubber solid slug configuration. Cost me $35 a box of 5 here. I was going to use it for stopping the Elk/Red stags I'm breeding from fighting through the fences and wrecking everything, but I think I'll hold off now after seeing your video. Thank you for the trouble you take to do these videos.
Hi Sheldon I'm breeding them as an aside to cattle, for the velvet market. The large Hungarian stags and to a lesser extent, elk/red hybrids are used for their antlers which are harvested twice each growing season. It's in demand. When they are 10 plus years old then there are people who will pay plenty for the chance to take them for a huge head. The more they are cut for velvet, the more growth next year the antler gets do if left in their last year to grow fully and harden, they can be what we call tree heads. In Aus there are hunting properties specifically for trophy class animals, but not a lot. Aussies tend not to want to pay for a hunt, nor to wait to let an animal grow to full potential, in case "someone else gets it first". There are no laws making anybody have ethics here. Hence some people will pay to get a top quality animal, on a large game park. Cheers Mate.
I rewatched you hitting the meat target at least 7 times and it gets funnier every time. The sound in which it made it unplanned comedy to the highest degree.
Amazing video. I do want to mention that when aiming a rubber slug you want to aim roughly 2-3in below the Xyphoid process/middle of the body/ blow that pointy bit on your sternum. A well placed blow there will trigger the solar plexus (nerves) and cause a target to become winded and not want to do anything since they won’t be quite sure if the are alive or not for roughly 1 hour. Liver is also a good area too.
Goofy Nose I would think that would have a higher chance of falling through. Ultimately I don’t understand why families are allowed to sue if it was proven justified self-defense and the member was killed committing a crime

@@BitterCynical Probably not. Much better to put a round into the dirt in front of the bear or into the trunk of a large tree right beside the bear if possible. Gun blast + impact noise probably enough to frighten it off. If not, next round goes into head or chest

@@o1mtbiker Absolutely true. A lot of folks seem to think bears are out roaming, hunting humans. Most times a "warning shot" isn't even necessary.. especially with black bears.
I do see the point tho, such as riot control. Lol not really affective. Seemd to just make them more pissed. But home defense? As John Wayne said "Nope, just lead"
I’ve been waiting forever for a video from Paul on this! I use these a lot at work. The Fiocci slugs. Part of our escalating deterrents for wildlife. We teach Predator Defence and Shotgun Handling courses, too. We teach people to shoot rubber slugs only at the bear’s rump, as you can cause serious or deadly damage. We also have 12 gauge bear banger shells. And 15mm pen flares of various types. Lots of exotic rounds, including signal flares. We run 870’s and 590’s, 590A1’s. I prefer the Mossy at work, Winchester Ranger 120 on personal time. We had one employee hit an Arctic Wolf that was chasing an atv into camp once. He learned his lesson fast! Just the other day, we were discussing the possibility of procuring rubber buckshot to bounce into wolves/persistent foxes. Keep the slugs for black/grizzly/polar bears. Haven’t had to put one down yet, but always a full tube of lead slugs when on duty and my own time. Thanks for another great and entertaining video.
Great vids! I’m very happy you stressed the “less lethal” rather than “non lethal” as others less knowledgeable would. “Application” was also rightfully used as these can either be directly aimed or skip shotted. I’ve mostly seen the slugs skipped for crowd control. Also I was not at all surprised with the semi auto shotgun results. I used low recoil 00 at a a match and about every 3rd failed to ejected. Like you said, the rubber rounds have virtually no recoil. From a fellow Oregonian keep up the great work and keep the vids coming!
The only scenario I can think of where less-lethal ammo might be advantageous for a civilian is in the same scenario police use it: as part of an organized defense against rioters in order to attempt to disperse them. Specifically a "Rooftop Koreans" (retail business armed defense during the 1992 Los Angeles riots) style scenario where a group is defending a place from rioters, who are not particularly motivated but may try to assault in groups. Even then, I see a very narrow and limited niche role for this ammunition, and I would want most defenders to be loaded with lethal ammunition. You probably can't legally shoot someone with less-lethal ammunition unless someone's life is endangered, and then most of the time it would be much wiser to use lethal ammunition. But if there's ten defenders maybe one of them could have less-lethal ammo loaded and be able to use it in a situation where the only other option is lethal force, but there's time to try to use less-lethal projectiles as dissuasion. I don't know, maybe a group of violent rioters are breaking down a door defenseless people are cowering behind and every form of dissuasion has been tried short of blowing them away. Less-lethal ammo is like a warning shot with a horse kick. You might break a leg, but using metal pellets you might take the leg off. It may be fully justified in a few circumstances where lethal force is only borderline justified. But 99% of the time, it's either justified to shoot someone with any ammunition or it's not justified to shoot someone with any ammunition. And if it's justified to shoot someone with any ammunition, then you probably want to use the ammunition that will stop the threat as quickly as possible, rather than take chances when lives are dependent on stopping a threat immediately and lethal force is fully justified. This non-penetrating rubber ammo has much less stopping power than buckshot, and if you've got one shot to prevent the demise of somebody (probably yourself) by inducing immediate incapacitation, you want the stopping power of buckshot. Not inaccurate rubber pellets that might be shrugged off, when the same gun can probably chamber ammo that is the gold standard of man-stopping small arms ammunition.
2019: Rubber slugs are only for crowd control so only cops really need them... 2020: Rubber slugs are only for crowd control so private shop keeps definitely need them...
I have watched 50 of your videos and all I can say is you are the premier channel for fudds. Also for people that want to see real answers to real questions.
Would love to see a video on the effectiveness of just fleece alone as the test median against what you would conclude as the most common projectiles for pistols, revolvers, rifles/lever actions, shotguns, and even a compound bow for comparison. Great video as always, a fan.
Paul has shot bare fleece with 25 ACP and it goes right through it. Fleece only stops bullets once they go through the meat target and lose their velocity/energy significantly
In Law enforcement we only used pump shotguns because they wouldn't cycle they painted them Orange to show they were the non-lethal weapon. Great video. The rounds did leave a welt on the arrestees.
Here’s my take: if you want to use “less than lethal” then you’re absolutely allowed to choose so. I can’t predict your results so I won’t even try. Just please don’t label any of us who don’t trust them with something like “kill hungry”
Watch Paul's video on why he doesn't like hyper ammo. Gives a good reason why you would not want to load your pistol with G2 RIP rounds when "RIP" means "Rest In Peace" and the ammo box has a tombstone and skull on it. Not exactly going to present you in the most favorable light possible to a judge and jury.
Hahaha. Yea, it looked like the shot cup was about as effective as the load. The worst thing about the slugs... looks like they’d tear him up pretty bad, but still leave him able to bring a law suit against you...
Thank you for the emphasis that these munitions are “less than lethal”. Applied incorrectly or deliberately if justified, they can be just as lethal as slinging lead down range. Also for context, for LE purposes these are meant to gain compliance via pain response vs physical displacement, and are often used to mitigate large disturbances. The better physical displacement/pain compliance munition against individuals that a couple larger agencies to the west of you are using is the Federal Exact Impact sponge or foam baton round. However, law enforcement/military restricted as it is in 40mm. Keep the vids coming and I’d happily wear a “You Be the Judge” shirt if offered for sale!
I would "consider" using one of these as the first shot, with a "Stopper" ready to go if they don't Stop Immediately... BUT ONLY with a Pump Shotgun... OBVIOUSLY not a good plan with a semi-auto !! So, in light of your tests, I'm thinking... possibly 'bird-shot' for the first round, and 00Buck or slug there after... (maybe that would 'look better' in Court..) But, on the other hand, If the FIRST SHOT doesn't Stop them... I may not GET 2nd or 3rd shots... and may not make it to court! My indoor Range does not allow practice with Buck-Shot. so a slug is all I can practice with... so that is what it is loaded with at home.. I have a fairly safe 'range of fire' in almost all directions, at my home... Wooded across the street and multiple walls between my home and any neighbors' homes, and no Family members at risk. So not too concerned with over-penetration, other than damaged furniture. So I think I will SKIP the 'less-lethal' stuff, and go with sure Stopping Power.
Paul, thanks for saying "citizen" instead of "civilian" when contrasting law enforcement personnel from the general public. It's obvious, as a retired military member, that you understand the importance of such a distinction.

Great content Paul. You probably saved some lemming from getting killed while holding an auto-loader
Most competent shooters can recoil a pump shotgun almost as fast as a semi auto anyways. Why trust your life to blowback?
That's exactly why the SPAS-12 was both pump and semi-auto: semi-auto mode was for standard slugs and buckshot, pump-action mode for things like sub-lethal and teargas rounds.
@@wheatdevon Underpressure and in the dark, you are far more likely to short stroke a pump then a semi-auto will fail with a full power load.

Agreed
I do think people should be ready for certain brown bears bc they can be monster sized and aggressive. Loud explosives and smoke will make bears run away most of the time.

How is it less than lethal if Paul Harrell is pulling the trigger?
*Top 10 Mysteries Science Still Cannot Answer*

The sales team who had sold several law enforcement departments this ammo, or should I saw used to sell.
I think the rubber buck is for dispersing crowds, so that wide pattern might not be a bad thing for its intended purpose.
Agreed .
I was thinking the same thing myself
It is normally used against crowds by skipping it off the ground instead of direct fire.
Not just dispersing crowds but for blinding them and permanently marking them as trouble makers. When 4 people show up to plan the protest missing an eye from the last protest it tends to discourage the new recruits.
I'd hate for one of those things to hit someone in the eye.
I really dagon like your videos Paul.
I have a high amount of respect for your effectiveness due to your efficacy on clarity and your mannerisms are quite enjoyable, but not in an insincere way. It’s just very genuine, legitimate exposure of your own experiences and opinions and that’s really rare, in all media in general. Your a special kind of channel. Anyways, keep on trucking.

It's a great day for a Paul Harrell video.

Hereward The Watchful yeah, real funny. That lack of respect for firearm safety is an A1 indication that you shouldn’t be within 1000 feet of one at all.
Hi Sheldon
I'm breeding them as an aside to cattle, for the velvet market.
Glad to see you fixing the misinformation that's out there, Paul, and have a great day!

I rewatched you hitting the meat target at least 7 times and it gets funnier every time. The sound in which it made it unplanned comedy to the highest degree.
"and remember, I'm right handed!" absolute gold
Amazing video. I do want to mention that when aiming a rubber slug you want to aim roughly 2-3in below the Xyphoid process/middle of the body/ blow that pointy bit on your sternum. A well placed blow there will trigger the solar plexus (nerves) and cause a target to become winded and not want to do anything since they won’t be quite sure if the are alive or not for roughly 1 hour.
Liver is also a good area too.
I would be worried about the civil lawsuits from a survivor of a break-in of my home.

Use of a firearm is deadly force. In my state I would face the same charge using buck shot to the knees as beanbags to the gut...

Goofy Nose I would think that would have a higher chance of falling through. Ultimately I don’t understand why families are allowed to sue if it was proven justified self-defense and the member was killed committing a crime

I keep it for tagging bears in the ass when they are rummaging on my property. Parks and Wildlife gave me some
I also keep some on me for bears while camping. A good first warning shot for an overly curious bear.
Does it actually work? Or does winnie the pooh get angry and start mauling people?
@@BitterCynical Probably not. Much better to put a round into the dirt in front of the bear or into the trunk of a large tree right beside the bear if possible. Gun blast + impact noise probably enough to frighten it off. If not, next round goes into head or chest

Let’s have a “more than lethal” presentation for .327 Federal magnum
Excellent comment. I'd love to hear any other thoughts you might have on rubber projectiles given current events.
Thats professional review. No absolutes. I love it.

Amen. I know a home invader would be hard pressed to continue an assault attempt with a 1oz slug in them or peppered with buckshot.
Excellent presentation Paul, thanks for demystifying the topic.
It's not effective against the meat target, but it is effective against an unmotivated target.
RIP Paul.
I'll leave the less-lethal stuff for law enforcement. I'll stick with extra lethal for the defense of myself and others as a civilian.

Greatly enjoy the humor and the fabulous education.
