I was today years old when I learned that frangipane is an almond based custard and not a plant. I was waiting for the frangipani flower to be added as I'd never heard of that before. Learn something new every day!
I know! It sounds like a beautiful huge jungle plant with spreading red flowers!!! In France every new year we have a "galette des rois" sort of puff pastry pie with an almond paste filling. There is a charm hidden in it and whoever gets it is "King" (or Queen!) and gets a gold paper crown(sold with the galette). I hope CJ will cook this one day.
when I called Marie Callendar's in 1998 to ask why their fresh (uncooked) strawberry pie was so good, he said they hulled them to remove the white interior. no idea if that makes THE difference but I was 24 at the time and I've done it that way every since. (also we should all take a moment to remember when cooks working in franchises actually cooked.)
strawberry shortcake was my dad's favorite, and i used to make it for him every chance i got...or if i didn't have the time to make biscuits from scratch, i'd serve him good pound cake or angel food cake with macerated strawberries and dairy-free tru-whip on top. he'd have loved this. :)
After the Nipples of Venus incident, I always get curious when you bring out the mixer involving butter/sugar because I'm always wondering "Is it going to happen again this time?"
You can also hull strawberries by pushing a straw from bottom pointed end up through green leafy top then blow out core. Learnt from the net, works a treat.
As with most skins of most fruits and veggies, the strawberry hull is actually very nutritious so for decades I have been eating them and also adding them into every dish that strawberries are included. Love the show, love the comedy and for sure always love the recipes chef John thank U so much I follow more recipes from here than anywhere else and every single one delicious. Life isn’t hard “people” make it that way unfortunately ❤️💛💚🙏🏾

Dunno about you, but if I'll do this, I would toast the short bread on the inside so that the liquid-y strawberry won't make it as soggy as it would be without.
A tip to bringing eggs and butter to room temp in about 20 mins: for butter, microwave a tall glass full of water until almost boiling. About 4 mins. Pour the water into a bowl. Put a stick of butter on it's end and put the hot glass over it. Put your cold eggs in your now warm bowl of water.

Oooooh, yummy! 😋 Will it still turn out this good if I use all Almond flour? I can't have the all-purpose flour and I don't know if it's ok to substitute one for the other. Thank you!

As someone with diabetes, i'd say this is my favourite channel and it is going to be the death of me.
No regrets.
This man is a true artist.
Me 2
I made this today with a basil infused whipped cream. So amazing!
"once the tops are nutted" OMG Chef John, phrasing! 🤣💀
Beautiful flavors. Macerated strawberries bring me to simpler times with smells and moments from the kitchen I'll never forget. ❤💜💐
Thank you for another great recipe!
My favorite birthday cake is a strawberry shortcake. I will have to remember this in the future.
Your voice makes the recipes seem even better.
AGREED!
You have to add 2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice with the sugar in the strawberries for the macerating... It's out of this world, you are welcome.
This frangipane is a great dessert. I made this but instead used a triple berry combo. Raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries. sooo good!
80s culinary school food presentation is so my guilty pleasure🙂

Looks like the best summer desert of all time :)
Perfect, Chef John!
This recipe is so good and easy that I have made it twice in the last two weeks
One of my favorite lines of chef John is “a little touch of sugar”
I just doubled the recipe and made 8 cakes for a party tomorrow. They look perfect!
I love almond extract when I bake cookies. And that quarter sheet pan looks the perfect size for baking it without ramekins.
I want one of those _fancy pants Strawberry Shortcake_ too. ☺️
Looks amazing, and I'll definitely be making some of those.

Please provide a link to the Nipples of Venus incident. I missed that. I want it only for the purpose of comparison.

Super yummy. Luckily, I recently bought some nice strawberries and haven't used them yet. Plus, I knew you forgot the salt! haha I'm learning!
making this for sure. looks bomb as hell
Accurate description 👌
These look delicious 🤤
put a touch of gran marnier in your strawberries 😍😍😍
Ooh, orange flavor, yum! Or to add to the almond theme, Amaretto!
I like Amaretto would be a great substitute for Almond extract…
I’m not sure what’s wrong with you but that’s clearly not enough whipped cream!!!!
😮😊
I agree, I have to put a half can over it at least 😂

Best recipe ever !!!

thank you
That one I can do. Thx
Seeing that it is late May I can't wait until next strawberry season which comes in February for us fools in Florida

Hey bro. Next, please do Chakalaka. A South African dish 💪
More whip cream please. Oh how I wish I had one of these now
Are you reading my mind? I just learned what frangipane is yesterday and then you post this! 😂
I always add a smidgen of lemon juice to the strawberries and sugar. Maybe not so much sugar tho
Whole heartedly agree. And some zest.

Awesome recipe chef, please show Italian Torta pasqualina recipe please 🥺 please
I actually thought you were going to throw in a dash of actual Frangipane liqueur somewhere in the recipe... would take it over the moon!!
Amazing!!
This reminds me of a bakery called Sweet Stop in Japantown that makes a Strawberry Pake.
Outstanding!
Almond and cherry are very close. So almond is like mixing in a dash of sweet cherries to the strawberry mix.
We've all done it again and again.... :)
I used to use orange liqueur with strawberries... absolutely sinful, but delicious.
Yummm!!
Every time Chef John says frangipane all I can hear is fancy pants.

Perfect way to use the bowl of strawberries in my fridge...and gain a killo of weight too 😂
The Martin Mull of your Hull! Shout-out to the funniest movie ever made, Clue.
“a little touch of sugar” 😂😂
mmm, serpy strawberries
Why cut the strawberry leaves off with a knife when you can grab the bunch and pull them off by hand all at once thereby wasting no strawberry berry?
Would this double well?
No cayenne? 🤣
❤
I really like the new twist on strawberry short cake but there is something missing ...where is the CAYENNE ???
I found stuffing almonds into apricots a bit tasty.
I like to skip the cake and just go for macerated strawberries with whipped cream.
That is a strawberry short-cut!
Will almond milk work if i don't have any regular milk?
Yes.
Hallo, just wanted to ask what the difference between shortbread and shortcake was.
shortbread is a cookie and shortcake is more like a biscuit or cake

How does the Frangipane fit in? Did I miss something?
Its the almond meal and almonds… i guess you could also add almond flavoring to the whip cream
Needs a layer of dark bitter chocolate.

Looks amazing, Chef! But why are you so stingy with the cream?!
WHERE'S THE CAYENNE???
