I love the opening lines of this song! So perfectly expresses the dilemma of the new guy filling in someone else's shoes. John looks and sounds so lonely telling his story and then the song widens to include all of us-brilliant!
I think John did more than an excellent job. He was a fantastic singer, keyboardist and writer. Yes, his brother Dino helped him, but Vinyl Confessions and Drastic Measures were good albums.
I had the Vinyl Confessions on tape at one time. I loved all the songs on this tape. I used to listen to it quite a lot. Now I am in my 50s reminiscing the songs of Kansas.
Although I was sad that Steve Walsh had left KANSAS, the first Concert tour with John Elafante in 1982 was very powerful and enjoyable..... It was a great recovery for the band........... John was very well received in Pittsburgh, Pa for the Vinyl Confessions Tour......

TOTALLY one of my favorite songs from the Elefante era! This concert was once on late-night television.. I taped it, and it was my first ever glimpse of Kansas in concert! They sounded every bit as good in person, as on the album- a rare feat. John had/has such a phenomenal voice....and came to Chrisitan faith right about the same time I did.
Much like when Steve Howe left Yes I figured the band had run it's course but as with Trevor Rabin I was wrong. If you can get by the Air Supply ensemble worn here, John Elefante is a force of nature. He filled the spot of the best singer I had ever seen live on the Audio Visions tour and did so with authority. And like Yes it was a different Kansas but still a very good one. I also love Stuart Ham's haunting refrain in the chorus. He was a great addition as well.
No way I was there also in 1983 Concert under the stars. I still have my T-Shirt from the concert and I never wore it. Its still brand new LOL. Right where Universal Studios is. Damn What a small world and if it was steve or elefante they ROCKED both ways. I'm so glad I grew up when CONCERT'S were CONCERT'S.
Yeah this is great, john had taken voice for awhile from the same coach as me in the mid 80's the late howard hayes in long beach ca. John went to lakewood high school and had a band with his brother dino called Elefante last time i ran into john was at the old maycompany shopping at christmas, this was just after he joined kansas and had play the game tonight out as a single. wow the good old days when i was younger. haha
+1 for making mention of this, never heard of them before, really nice song - seems they were a New Jersey Cover Band originally, performing Kansas / Styx / Queen / Boston / covers ... etc ... so the Kansas influence makes sense
Let's just say he was Kansas' best singer vocally. He should have replaced Steve when he retired. They would be so much more relevant. One of my favorite Kansas songs.
Elefante had great vocals but I hated looking at that goofy Afro and the goofy outfits that he wore! although he was a terrific replacement when Walsh left.
This is a really great song. A shame very few people know it --- definitely part of the Kansas legacy.

I used to sing this song with my band back in the early 90's. It's such a beautiful song and let me tell you, the ladies loved it.

I was at the Loyd Noble Center in Norman, OK, on this same tour. I heard this and saw it live. It was just as good as the recording, if not better.
