Excellent description of the physics. Thanks a lot. How much should I expect to pay to a professional to come and drain the pool? Is there any special care to be taken when filling it back up? Aren't there hydrostatic valves in the main drain which will relieve this pressure, and how do I check them to be operational? Thanks a lot!

Hands4Surgery Each area of the country has a little different pricing structure, so it is hard to say what it would cost. The range should start at several hundred dollars for a drain and clean, and then water can either be trucked in or refill with the hose in most areas. You should re-balance the water when the pool is refilled. Yes, there should be hydrostatic drains in the main drain of the pool - care should be taken when draining a pool though. Sometimes they malfunction, and/or get stuck open or closed with debris or pebbles, and in the case of a high water table may not be able to relieve the pressure quickly enough to save the pool from shifting. There are many things to consider before attempting a drain, and a good pool professional should be able to help you evaluate the risks and concerns. Thanks for commenting!
